As a Micronesian we have a saying "u will not find ur way if u do not know where u are coming from" Our pacific cultures started dying when Christianity came ashore.

After the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy in 1893 and the annexation of the islands to the U.S., the Hawaiian language and culture were greatly suppressed and "Hollywoodized", and many generations did not learn about these aspects of their history and heritage until the "Hawaiian Renaissance" of the 1970s and 80s when there was renewed knowledge and pride in the Hawaiian achievements and values of past and a push to reclaim their culture and identity. Hawaiian music and hula played a great part in this rediscovery and perpetuation of the language and culture of the native people of the Hawaiian islands and their descendants. That is why these kumu hula (hula masters, sources of knowledge) and their schools are so important today.

I can't speak on hawaii... But as a samoan i can say we don't have a written language... Our history is shared through song and dance. To take it away is to take away our past. Might be similar for Hawaiians.

Native Hawaiians (Kanaka Ma'oli) weren't even allowed to teach or speak our native language until 1987. In 2000 rougly only 5% of the native population spoke fluent Native Hawaiian, most of which reside on Ni'ihau. Since that time our native langauge speaking natives has increased, but often not used at home. We are vicitims of a genocide. From a 1mil strong @cook's arrival to 80k full blooded natives by 1891. How we became a State, Cleveland ordering the return of our monarchy all the way to Clinton's apology act admitting it was unconstitutional and yet nothing has been returned nor given compensation for what was stolen from us. We didnt lose only our homes, our lands, our language, and our culture.....we lost our Nation! Like the native Americans, everything was stolen. The lands returned as part of their way to compensate was barren land, dry areas where vegetation doesnt grow well. They have apologized and admitted wrong yet we arwnt even recognized as indigenious people because they liquified our blood quantum levels and have taken years trying to determine who would be considered as native. By the time they do this we will be long gone as far as blood quantum levels. Currently you have to prove you have at least 50% native blood to qualify for homestead benefits. However, due to diversification that is already dwindling down due to being force to interacially marry. My mother had more than 50% and qualifies, but I have half that and would lose the homestead because I dont qualify. Being Native Hawaiian is more than just blood, its the air we breathe, its a way of life, and it is engraved in our spirit. No matter the quantum it makes no difference and we should not be held accountable for why as of today we only have a handful of pure blooded Hawaiians left (compared to the population of 50% or less blood quantum). We deserve to be compensated for the wrong committed. What good is an apology without recourse or restitution? The United States owes us more than a damn apology! We suffered a far worse faith than most. They know they owe us and they know what they should do, but they dont want to do what is right. Our lands are just way too valuable to them. Their best weapon is time. As time goes on our native blood will slowly disappear with each passing generation. Kanaka Ma'oli are listed as severly endangered.
