Volcano Art Center's Hula Arts at Kīlauea 2024 continued on June 8th with a captivating performance by Hālau Hula Malanai, led by Kumu Hula Liana Leiʻilima Kanaʻiaupuni Aveiro. This 10:30am presentation at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park's pā hula (entrance fees applied) showcased the hālau's deep roots and distinct "hula kuʻi" styling.
A branch of Hālau Hula Ka Noʻeau, Malanai's lineage traced back to revered Kumu Hula Maiki Aiu Lake, Mae Kamamalu Klein, and the Royal Court dancers. Aveiro, who had studied under Michael Pili Pang for over two decades, perpetuated these traditions through kahiko and auwana hula forms. Her dedication to "hula is life" inspired community outreach at events like Huliheʻe Palace and festivals.
Based in Waimea's uplands, the hālau's name, gifted by Pang, evoked the distinct "Waika" breeze - clean, cool, refreshing, promoting love. With students aged 4 to adulthood, Malanai embodied hula's intergenerational transmission.
