Hulk and Big Flipper winch a 160,000lb container forklift
This is probably the last in my series of "older" videos that I never got a chance to upload 2 years ago. Around this time I started experimenting with a 360 degree camera that is pretty cool, but a lot of people didn't know how to work the video while watching and complained too much, so I never did this one.
We were called by a customer to winch out a container forklift that got stuck in a dirt yard near Compton, CA. Dave responded in Big Flipper, our 2019 Peterbilt 75ton rotator, while I arrived in Hulk, our 2020 Peterbilt 50ton rotator. Prior to me arriving, Dave winched out the container that was on the forklift, to allow him to safely drive forward once we lift him. If you've ever seen a container forklift in person, you know they are HUGE. Almost all the weight on these are in the back to act as a counter for when they are lifting containers.

My, how time flies when you're having fun. That was a pretty sketchy lift with a moving load. Nothing got broke and everyone went home so it's all good. Too bad you couldn't leave the container on it to help with the balance. The 360 stuff was pretty cool but it was problematic with all the movement. Good on you for giving it a shot. Thanks for dragging this one back from the archives.

What that forklift did was the worst thing you can do when not on a paved surface. He turned the wheels while not moving. That caused him to break through the hard packed surface into the looser soil and when he couldn't move he probably tried to straighten the wheels digging himself in deeper. Seen it happen before.

I don't know anything about the 360* videos or how to work it, I know I did watch this just now on my laptop and was not able to pan/tilt/maneuver the camera around and this was spot on. I never complained about it in the past, it wasn't THAT annoying LOL. but this recovery....DAMN! All I got for this. I saw the title of the video and first thought "why get both trucks? double or triple up the line(if you got the length for it) and pull this behemoth"..... glad I watched the video first, LOL. this was impressive, and you are SO on point and correct, about rigging.

A good old Big Red Taylor. These things happen. In dirt lots. A rail I haul out of has 3 big Ferrari telehandler lifts on was picking a 40HC box that had 66000 lbs of bulk soybeans in it. THE Boom was extended out to far. He nose dived. Box busted open. Operator face planted into the windshield. A big ole mess it was. Those Ferrari's are so big it's a 4 truck move. That Taylor is a 3 truck move. Love your videos.

dang it's not often a rotator like Big Flipper is made to look puny by what it's lifting.. but that container forklift was massive!! Nice job guys and thanks for sharing! It made me laugh as it reminded me of an exact opposite from a Ron Pratt video where his 1150R was requested specifically by the owner for a 5,000lb forklift that was just slightly stuck hehehe

in this case the shipping container would have acted like a counter weight and reduced the load that each truck had to lift

That was a BEAST of a lift for sure!! I've spent a lot of time working around these things in the past. They are massive and crazy STRONG. That one will probably lift a 60,000 lb container like it's a toy and then drive off with it. I saw a few of those at the Port of Seattle on time rated to lift 120,000 lbs!! Good job explaining the math of heavy lifting!! And, cool video!!

In Cincinnati the biggest depot stacks boxes 6 high and up to 20 deep. In a creek bottom. I can't tell you the Tones of crusher run they've dumped in there. Those Kanmars they have can go 7 high cube boxes high. Bad dusty for container work Fancy show trucks need not apply. Clean and simple and light weight yes.

Why does big flipper have a tag axle in the rear when almost all the other trucks have them towards the front?
@ibrahimpaso

That makes easier to drive around the smaller streets since makes the wheelbase shorter .

The biggest cause of getting stuck like that is from turning the wheels to Sharp on dirt I know because I've gotten too many of them stuck doing that in the past just not paying attention to what I was doing even off-road forklifts and hooked it the piggyback forklifts to go on the back of straight trucks got them stuff because I turn the wheel too sharp and it just dug in you just have to pay attention just like that hole they dug it with the wheels I turn them back and forth trying to get situated instead of going slower and making her turn bigger and softer

@richardreid6377
@richardreid6377 2 года назад
Pitiful excuse for a storage lot. Looks like they graded the dirt and ran a roller over it. Not one bit surprising the steer tires (slicks yet) would slide when turned nearly 90 degrees to the direction power is being applied.

Gawd. What maeks that dam thing so fucking heavy? tungsten steel frame?!?! big ass diesel engine?! Cant imagine a forklift no longer than a semi weighing that of 2 fully loaded semis
@glenyoung1809
@glenyoung1809 20 дней назад
Keep in mind, forklifts, telehanders and anything with a boom functions like a crane. Anytime you have a mass in the front the center of gravity of the machine you need an equal mass to counterweight it in the back to keep from tipping over. The only other way is to have outriggers to use the ground to stabilize yourself. So that container forklift might be rated for 60,000 lbs meaning it will need a lot of weight in the back minus the engine's weight to counterbalance the payload weight in front, it's not a surprise it weighs that much. Just as small warehouse forklifts may weight 5000lbs or more depending on their function.

It that forklift supposed to have bald tyres?
@DeathHead1358
@DeathHead1358 2 года назад
Most container handlers and forklifts of this size run slick tires like that because they're usually operated on asphalt or concrete, as well as being heavy enough to still get traction when the surface is wet. They aren't really meant to be used on non paved surfaces due to how heavy they are. Even small forklifts that have tires with tread on them struggle on any surface that isn't paved or packed down to be nearly as hard as a paved surface.
