Hulk Hogan Bankrupts the Navy - Thunder in Paradise

Like the New Generation Project Podcast said when they did two episodes on it, initial ratings for Thunder in Paradise were actually pretty good, and shortly after it began airing on TV in March 1994, it was rumoured that the show was up for renewal, and the good folks at Berk/Schwartz/Bonann Productions were looking at filming 30 more episodes in 1995. Surprisingly, despite rumours of a second season or a series of TV movies, Thunder in Paradise only lasted one season of 22 episodes, before being cancelled in November 1994. At the time it was circling the drain, Hogan apparently began floating the idea of either re-branding the show, or launching a new show starring himself, fellow WWE Hall of Famers Sting and Mr. T, and a female martial artist (possibly Cynthia Rothrock) as the main cast. Perhaps Thunder in Paradise's biggest contribution to pro wrestling was entirely through its filming location, Disney's Hollywood Studios, where WCW was then taping episodes of its shows Saturday Night and WorldWide. During production, Ric Flair and Eric Bischoff met with Hogan and successfully convinced him to sign with WCW in 1994. And that helped start the domino effect which created both the New World Order and the Attitude Era. Anyways, I remember watching Thunder in Paradise on ITV in the UK around early to mid 1995 while waiting for Gladiators to come on. One more thing of note, there was never really much in the way of actual threat or peril during any of Spencer and Bru's adventures. For example, oh, it's Tuesday: Jessica's been kidnapped and we've got to save her; that's cool, as long as we get it wrapped up before the end of Wednesday, because Thursday, Kelly's being kidnapped and will need rescuing. And then Friday, a face from our past will show up to settle the score with us, but it will all be wrapped up in 45 minutes, and the final shot will be of us drinking at the Scuttlebutt, laughing, or both. That's it, that's the formula of Thunder in Paradise.

This show gave us what is legit one of the greatest FMV games ever. It's a genuinely fun game on the CD-i (there was also a PC version that's nearly impossible to find). The game has so many FMV reactions from Hogan and his partner that there's actually a decent amount of replay value for a FMV game. There's also multiple endings and a few branching paths. As a bonus, you play as JT from the show step by step. I'm not kidding. Oh and there's a 2nd disc with a CD-i exclusive episode.

The pink hotel in the beginning is right down the street from me.. wish the beaches actually had people that looked like that on em...

Of course Jimmy Hart and Brutus Beefcake show up. They are attached to Hogan like lampreys. And I'm pretty sure that was Giant Gonzalez who manhandled the Hulkster.

I grew up watching Patrick Macnee in The Avengers (BBC 1961, not the corny remakes)...he is a British legend. How the mighty fall.

Generic Old White Guy is played by Patrick Macnee, who played John Steed in The Avengers TV series. What a comedown, from The Avengers to Thunder in Paradise, although he did get to spend time with sexy young women in bikinis, just reliving his youth.

There was a channel called the USA Network and they’d play stuff like this all day during weekdays.

Jorge Gonzales was one of the worst wrestlers ever, though apparently a nice guy. He was recruited by the Atlanta Hawks to play basketball, but when it was clear he had no agility Ted Turner, who had to pay him anyway, sent him over to his wrestling company to become El Gigante. Having no agility, almost no wrestling training, and no acting talent he was pretty useless but they thought he was so big it had to work. WCW was giving up on him, buy classy Vince McMahon saw $, so he brought him into the WWF and put him in an outfit which make's Hogan's Little Hulkster wrap look good. The Undertaker "Giant Gonzalez" match at Wrestlemania has gone down in history, and not in a good way.
