Human beings are on a quest for happiness.
God did not design us to settle for shallow, transitory and superficial things, but designed our nature to seek out goodness in the fullest sense. The highest goodness is always calling us, summoning us to seek it and enjoy it.
Human Action (Aquinas 101) - Fr. James Brent, O.P.

To sum up, the stages of human action are as follows: 1. simple volition (5:10) 2. intention (5:46) 3. deliberation and consent (6:33) 4. decision - act of the reason (7:02) 5. election - act of the will (7:09) 6. command - performed by the reason (7:20) 7. use - execution of the will (7:26) 8. fruition (8:01) Thank you for the video.
@ThomisticInstitute
@ThomisticInstitute 4 года назад
That's right. To fill it out yet further, simple volition is preceded by an a) apprehension of the end and intention is preceded by a b) judgment of attainability. Deliberation and consent are the intellectual and volitional components respectively of that stage. Finally, fruition has both intellectual and volitional components, sometimes called active and passive fruition. This is a subject I think about a great deal. I have a degenerative illness which makes life very difficult at times, but with the Lord as my goal, I find that I am at peace most of the time, and a joy which does not require riches, lots of friends, parties, constant activity, sexual activity, etc. My life is improving even as my health fails.

Thank you for concisely explaining the Steps of Human Action by St. Thomas Aquinas! Prior to watching, I had a great trouble digesting this topic because our learning module horribly translated and explained this topic in our native language. I even had a hard time researching this topic on the internet. After watching and reading the comments, everything became clear :)

I strongly recommend the book Human Action by Ludwig von Mises, and Man, Economy, and State by Murray Rothbard which deduce the entire science of economics from the single axiom of human action.

@@clavdiolizarraga1075 sure! Juan de Marianna is considered one of the best. Juan de Lugo was perhaps the first to combine scarcity and utility in a single theory of value. Martín de Azpilcueta Navarrus was the first economic thinker to state clearly and unequivocally that government price-fixing is a mistake. Luis de Molina is another. Fransisco de Vitoria was the founder of the school of Salamanca but his specialty was more in law. Overall though Jesus Huerta de Soto has an excellent lecture on youtube that he gave to some Spanish priests going more in depth on the achievements of the Spanish scholastics.

Does this have anything to do with Mises vision of Human Action?

I had the same thought. The type of reasoning seems very similar. A praxeological path to happiness perhaps.
@patrickfreeman9460
@patrickfreeman9460 3 года назад
Yes, it does. Although Mises was the first to formulate the Human Action Model in today's Austrian terminology, he actually inherited the concepts in a much more verbose form from Carl Menger, who is generally considered the founder of Austrian Economics. Carl Menger, as well as many other influential social science thinkers of the day, studied under an anthropology professor named Franz Brentano, who is most famous for introducing Scholastic philosophy (of which Thomism had been the core for several centuries), to German speaking academia, which had largely abandoned Scholasticism after the Protestant Reformation.

If dogs and other animals deliberate and make free judgments that can go against their instincts, then they need to be held accountable for their actions--judged and punished for misbehavior (e.g. the dog kills the neighbor's beloved cat).

Well, now we know that Thomas is basically wrong. All human being's thinking is trapped in a neural network not of their own design. The Brain is God's Design, just like the bee's and bird's brains are also running on God's Design. So human's thinking is trapped in this neural network. Even if we design an AI Machine to think up new ideas for us, that AI design came out of human brains neural networks. So it's finite 'freedom', finite 'liberty' - confined to the design of the homo sapien neural network.
