Human After All: The Weirdest Daft Punk Album...
The electronic music duo's weirdest album? Let's find out!
follow my twitter
➽ Twitter - / onlysmallbites
Main music is DK Dokuro - Passport.MID (Sega Genesis 90's remix)
Today, I will be going over Daft Punk, the French house electronic duo consisting of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, and their third studio album Human After All. They created the album Homework and Discovery and Human was the next step. The album having the singles Robot Rock and Technologic, among others. Prime Time of Your Life even having a music video. After a long silence, the robots have abruptly decided to finish the robot journey with their retirement in a video titled "Epilogue". Random Access Memories was a great album as well. Daft Punk really had an amazing run with full albums and weird music video. This was an interesting one.
I do a lot of Daft Punk Instrumental AND hip hop Instrumentals, but this time I'm doing a music breakdown / discussion of sorts on Human After All: The Weirdest Daft Punk Album
If this video does well to me, I can continue this.
Not review, video essay, music video, playlist, or anything like that. An onlysmallbites original video. This is more of a vlog / talk video with nice drawings / art

Human After All is honestly my favorite Daft Punk album. I get the hate that it gets, people not liking how minimalist and overblown it is, but personally I really respect it. I think it's kinda genius, and as for people who criticize it for being so distorted compared to discovery... Well, just a few years later Cross would come out and people went insane for that so idk what they're on. The minimalism, is a valid complaint. But I can look past it and hear it for what it is. An experimental concept piece from 2 genius robots.... Which also has some fucking BANGERS on it.

I understand not liking the repetition for most people, but I don't think it makes it bad. I think Human After All would be best, strangely, as a backing track to a movie. It's great to listen to while you're working or playing videogames, because you always get a taste of the song later even if you get distracted. It feels surprisingly ambient. But I love it personally, and this isn't a very popular opinion, but I love The Brainwasher. It's awesome. Of course Robot Rock, Television Rules the Nation, and Human After All.

As someone heavily versed in minimal techno with songs that go on for 10+ mins with little changes in progression, I can say that Human After All is a treat. I know it’s a mega acquired taste but I fully agree. I think people generally need to have a more open mind to styles of music that are outside their typical consumption. If an album seems a little too “out there” for you, maybe there is a different perspective you can take to appreciate it. I personally am not the biggest fan of RAM because of the poppier direction it took, but I can respect the vision and how utterly beautiful some of the tracks are, and I understand why many praise it as the best Daft Punk album. Human After All deserves so much more love than it gets (or, at the very least, so much less hate).

Human After All, Emotion and Make Love are definitely three of their best tracks. I honestly like the album but can't stand Robot Rock and Television Rules The Nation which means I hate nearly 10 minutes of the 46 minute runtime. That's where the album probably suffers- if you can't click with one song or idea, that idea that you dislike takes up a pretty substantial portion of the runtime so lessens the overall album enjoyment.

Human is def one of, if not the best track on this album but top 3 DP tracks? And emotion and make love, 2 five minute loops are your favorite DP tracks? Seems like you like emotional/love songs. These 3 long loop tracks do it more for you than songs like Digital Love, Too Long or Within? IMO picking the 3 worst tracks from DP is easier to do than picking the 3 best. You may have picked 2 of worst as your best.
@marxistlynchist
@marxistlynchist 3 года назад
@@gregtufaro8166 I didn't say these tracks were top three DP songs, I said that those three tracks were among the best in their discography (around the top 25 or so). I respectfully disagree with you thinking Make Love and Emotion are two of their worst. Every track on this album is a loop- the enjoyment of them entirely depends on whether the sound design and concept resonate with you; they may not be the most complex DP tracks but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy them.

The epilogue was made with rush , i mean it's not orchestrated, a new video, a new track ,like "we have to run now we can't explain guys ,bye!"; i always imagine their goodbye like a "Mothership reconnection"or a returning to the laboratory video ,and then a big door (like star wars )close the room and the scene.

I think conceptually this album is just as good as their other stuff. It just falls short because the production is not as pristine and solid as their other releases. The ideas and themes on this record are fantastic. I personally really dig the minimalist approach. However, its very half baked and not really thought out all that well. It still works and is a decent record overall though.
@SynGirl32
@SynGirl32 3 года назад
Kraftwerk is pretty much a text book example of how to make minimalist music. Autobahn has about 8 lines of lyrics, and rarely gets more than two-notes' worth of polyphony, and yet it remains interesting for 22 minutes, through excellent variety in its limitations, and masterful usage of soundscapes, all of that making it a landmark in musical simplicity. To make a long story short, it's simple, but it's also varied and know how to switch it up.

Human After All is one of my personally favorite albums by Daft Punk. From beginning to end. I know that it's not the BEST, but it is incredible. The disco and pop mix was there, added with the punk rock makes the album feel more realistic. When I listen to it I feel that I'm actually listening to it live. Alive 2007 added SO MUCH to Human After all, yet the original album is so great. The fact that they took almost little time makes it feel even more like how they originally intended (from what I have seen) the album's theme to feel like: artificial. As you said, this album shows the darker side of Technology and it replicates that perfectly with a huge mess of repeating nonsense and noise. It adds to the creepiness, the robotic feel Daft Punk has as a whole, and the artificial vibe I get from listening to the album, it is perfectly created in every way. And just one more thing, On/Off is the perfect song for transition. Plus it adds on the album a "OoOoOhHhHhH sPoOkY rObOt TaKe OvEr" and I just find it amazing.

The thing about HAA is that the repetitiveness evolves and changes in your head, more than anything. The long term retrospective on it of course makes that easier to explain but when this was fresh off the press, this was one of those albums that I would listen to with intense focus and similar to how repeatedly saying the same word over and over makes you disassociate with it, these long repetitive tracks so too disassociated in my head. Each listen became a lesson in what to focus on and it's always been something different every time I hear it-- even now, 15 years later. Can't wait for RAM!

I don't know, there's something so alluring about this album. It exudes an aura of mystery; even the album cover feels like a siren song. I can stare at it for hours, trying to peer past the static and delve into its depths, only to find myself confronting the void, gazing into the reflection of a nonexistent TV. It feels like it's rotting my brain, brainwashing me, leaving me standing alone in the dark for hours, staring back at my own reflection. The synths are so RAW, they are screaming in agony, as if demons are howling in tongues while being skinned alive. Scratches and whispers emanate from unknown sources, adding to the eerie atmosphere. The singles' covers evoke the same unsettling feeling, reminiscent of the back rooms - familiar yet unnerving. There's something just... *off.* I think that's the essence of the album - it is what it is. That's all you get, and you can do whatever you want to with it. And they did it in "Alive 2007"; they flipped the songs, turning them with a PUNK ROCK energy.

But was quickly on board for this sound and really enjoyed HAA on release (growing up I was more into industrial and darker music, and I was actually excited that it wasn't Discovery Part II because I like when artists don't get comfortable, for better or for worse). But I appreciate that for the bangers on there it's not a super palatable album experience - I definitely have to be in the mood to listen to it from start to finish. I love your videos, how you capture the elements of the music, the era in which it was created in, its cultural impact, and how it sounds, regardless of nostalgia or what has been done to those tunes after their release. I discovered DP around '06, with the 1993-2005 CD-DVD collection, and later that year with all three studio albums, plus Alive '97 and the bootleg from their gig at Coachella, so I was pumped for the clips, for the music alone, but also for their mashups. I have to plead guilty as I do say I enjoy HAA over its siblings because of the Alive tour. I've listened to it last week, and didn't hold up as good as I thought it would. Oh and if you're creeped out by the HAA clips, you should sure give a look to Alterian Inc. Not trying to throw a bunch of importance at some symbol but I genuinely think that when the algorithm chooses you to shine in the near future, you’re gonna go far with it. Calling it now

I actually think it's quite common for an album to be panned on it's release only to be liked years later. Drukqs by Aphex springs to mind (I actually think they were right first time, as it appears to me most of his releases started going down hill from that point) Do you fancy doing a review of Aphexs albums?
@onlysmallbites
@onlysmallbites 3 года назад
Fair enough. And Aphex would be interesting sometime down the line. It has been a minute since I listened to him though so I'd have to revisit. I do recall seeing that though, about the downhill as I think Drukqs was like a real "magnum opus" attempt.

lol my first exposure of daft punk was back in '05, i lived next door a baseball park and when HAA dropped, they played robot rock and television rules the nation on repeat during those breaks in the game or whatever they call it (lol). to this day those tracks really remind me of baseball, and since '05 ive been chasin that daft punk sound, which in turn basically got me into music in general. HAA always got that special part in my music tastes, even tho it aint my fav daft punk album (homework) also im enjoyin these daft punk vids mane keep em up!

of the trio of pre-ram studio albums HAA is absolutely my favourite. I like the atmosphere, the raw, thick synths and guitars, the robotic vocals -- I know it's not for everyone but I love it.

@@onlysmallbites has to be HAA (which is a fantastic opener) or technologic - but I also really like television (the unreleased radio edit from the music vid is nice too) and I do put on emotion/make love quite frequently. tbh I do forget about brainwasher! but its a banger once it gets going.

Honestly, I think Daft Punk are masters at keeping you held onto a particular groove if the listener is open to it. It’s the grooves and the aesthetic that carry the album, but I think the directions the grooves go in for the majority of tracks is pretty good; obviously not as good as the other albums but still for standout tracks, it’s really good and provides enough variation to keep it progressing; like Human After All, The Prime Time Of Your Life, Steam Machine, The Brainwasher, Technologic and (controversially) Emotion. And I LOVE the aesthetic and especially appreciate how they can sound so distinct while making major shifts in their sound from each album. This aesthetic they achieved on HAA is soooo fascinating to me

I know it's biased by the fact it's the first daft punk album i've listened to, but I find it absolutely great ! The bass lines are all incredible, I just love this robotic and creepy atmosphere, it's an album I like to listen to because it's almost an "extreme" in its style. And as you say, the xay they reused these tracks in alive is even better

idk why but i listen to a lot of the remix album than the actual album itself. it's because I'm addicted to 3 SONGS on there which are: dat justice remix, sebastian remix, and that other version of robot rock. it just sounds so GUDDD

Discovery might be the one closest to my heart but HAA is the only I find myself coming back to the most. It’s just so visceral and uncanny. People say it’s too repetitive and unpleasant sounding but doesn’t Homework also have super repetitive songs that are hard on the ears (Rock N’ Roll, Rollin’ and Scratchin’)? It’s a tough album to appreciate but once it clicks, it really shines

Technologic, of course. HAA and Prime Time. Emotion and Make Love i wish had a bit more substance to them, extremely forgettable than the entire album itself.

So for me i figure out technologic As after that song emotion is next and uses the main sound of technologic in emotion and i thought it was weird and unoriginal but i realized that in the music video the robots are teaching AI what the words mean and after technologic the robot understands the words and finally feels emotion and since it’s all you get to hear in repeat, it ends up being a really interesting take on human after all
