HLB uses Digitech Whammy pedals live to be able to perform these songs due to the tuning changing constantly. The whammy is midi controlled and automatically pitches either up or down for parts of riffs, entire riffs or entire songs. The pedal is included in the video to demonstrate how much it is actually doing. The tuning of the guitar is still 'E B E A Ab A' but it changes a lot. So anyone asking for tabs or tuning is still not going to be able to perform a lot of HLB songs I'm afraid.
Must help y'all be super tight as a band if you're running a system that changes depending on certain parts of a song. Half a second is enough to throw the timing way out. Man, props to you. This is killer.
still some of favourite guitar work out there! the whammy is insane, gotta look into one for sure. hopefully a tab will still pop up eventually :p definitely on my list to learn
I would still buy tabs just for learning and analyzing the composition. And I don't think anyone will try to do a live cover, but for someone doing a YT cover, it will be processed on the computer anyway (so the midi mappings aren't needed). Selling tabs is an extra income opportunity for the band, and it's up to them to determine if it's worth investing in.
This even makes you guys more fascinating to me. I love your guys music and your style. Would really love to get the chance to see you all live whenever this Covid-19 shit calms down. Hope you guys are all healthy and doing well.
There definitely needs to be a tutorial of Buster showing us how to modulate the midi whammy through live sequences. I WANT to do that multiple Tuning change during realtime and not just programming it in afterwards for playback.
Huh, I imagined the face of the person orchestrating the end of the world to have more anger, but no, here we are getting the focused face of utter destruction. How interesting.
I can't help but love how Buster is always so laid back and relaxed while doing all these HLB and Vildhjarta playthroughs. Like dude is almost yawning in-between the most crushing and face-melting riffs that vaporize bones and have a gravitational pull of their own. Legend!
Lol I like how after every section he takes this big exhale and breath like "whew that was a workout! All those heavy riffs weigh a ton!" Lmao he does it 3 times
Groundbreaking axework and studio magic. Seeing how the sounds are created is mesmerizing. Regarding new sounds it´s almost like watching a darker, meaner, more evil Tom Morello perform for the first time ever.
Dude I don't care how you tune or what gear you use because the end product speaks for its self. This shit is just disgusting in every way and I mean this as a heartfelt compliment. The production on this track is absolutely fantastic and everything you put out consistently improves. Thank you for leaning away from the flange vocals. Can't wait for more of this stuff. P.S. would love to work on gore FX for future projects. Just goggle me.
@Perpetual Havoc I enjoyed how technical and brutal this track was, despite having heard technically "more advanced" music than this. This is still impressive to me, what's to get confused about, dumbass?
Awesome work guys! this song is just epic! your music is so different and refreshing! i love the middle finger you make to mainstream music! cheers from France! see you on April in Paris ;)
Being a LEFT HANDED player who has played countless right handed guitars upside down i feel i have the authority to crown you a LEFT HANDED GUITAR JEDI MASTER. Man that is some serious dexterity skills
Bruh people out here asking for tabs, I am sitting watching this like what is even happening. The patience it would take to learn this, in itself, is enough 😅😂
Pretty much one of my favorite songs at the moment. I've been playing death metal guitar for 30 years now (mid tempo lately and death/doom), but am just now discovering thall. It has already had an influence on my songwriting and overall approach to playing, and guitar tone, in just the last few months. Love this band. Also, thanks to a tutorial from Buster, I now know the benefits of throwing in an EQ before the amp in the signal chain. Never thought of that before. Makes a HUGE difference in clarity. I really need to know how that first riff in Vittring is done though. I can't figure it out. That backwards sounding palm mute effect is SICK AF. Is it studio magic? Or a strange technique?
most likely studio trick. in logic at least, there's an option to reverse audio in the region inspector, i'm sure other daws have this feature too. I would play a palm mute, cut it where you want the reverse to start, copy/paste it right after and reverse. And probs crossfade if you get a click/pop sound
I dig this unique signature sound. It just grabs your attention and imprints in your mind instantly. Personally, when I consider if a band is good or not - I compare it if it's worth giving a listen instead of relistening HLB another time.
One thing I love about this track, and a lot of material from HLB is that, musically alone, it's disturbing sounding. It takes you on a chaotic ride of fright/boarder line horror.
@@MegaLaban12345It's a pretty good take, and it isn't an insult. He's not just good because he's a good guitarist, he's good because he's a great songwriter. Writing parts that go beyond what even guitars can do, and then programming the MIDI for them is an entirely separate art, and he's pretty much invented and mastered it.
Is there any way we could get a playthrough like this for "Dehumanize"? Would love to see that played, that main drop riff is up there with the middle riff from "Animal" in terms of how crushingly groovy it is, damn
You guys have quickly become one of my favorite bands. There isn't too much unique music in the metal genre but you guys have such a signature sound. I fucking love it and can't wait to hear the next album!
You can tell he's a drummer from how physical he is with the guitar. If there's any music where you should look mad at the instrument you're playing it on, though, this is it.
Hey Buster, awesome as always! I love to finally see the Whammy in action. Would you say that the Whammy is much better than the pitch block inside the Axe FX II for everything except complex chords? Thank you so much, I can't wait to dive into your Nail The Mix stuff I discovered recently. Cheers!
I have the Axe FX II and Whammy DT. Whammy DT is miles better than the Axe Fx pitch block. Axe FX has too much latency and quality loss whereas sometimes with the Whammy DT I forget I have the pitch control on.
I think he just does it through protools, no plug in needed, you just send a midi command through in the click and it’ll do whatever pitch shift you tell it to. My band (Lune) does it in a few of our songs using reaper where we shift down to C1. You can do it though pretty much any DAW. I hope this helps.
I'm having a seizure trying to understand how are you controling the whammy telepathicaly (joking, but I wish I had one already to be able to understand what are you doing ahah)
@Perpetual Havoc again, I was joking, but you can see the leds on the whammy changing right when there's tunning changes, dunno if it's programable that way, my bet is that he had another pedal on the ground controling the one on the amp. there's post processing aswell though, but I don't think all of it was
And here many said Black metal was dead. At first I thought these guys were some kind of a djent rip off band, but the last album proved how wrong I was. So many good black metal vibes, weird rhythms, awesome music production.
Very interesting, what is controlling the changes on the whammy? Clearly no one is fiddling around with it physically so I assume it's been programmed in advance but what controls it?
Thank you for this playthriugh! It really helps me appreciate the workmanship and talent behind the sound, and also thanks for the instrumental version! Hope to purchase it one day!
I would really know the bpm changing progress. I tried to check it by ear, but the first theme beated me. After all I have something like 98-99 changing constantly, then in the ending 64-65-66-67. Am I right or completly fucked up? :D
I think that sound is not better from original album mix. Detestor album mix&mastering have already best sound i have ever heard. There was no need for that remastered. Original was the best !
