He didn’t slaughter the civilians, let the rulers stay if they just proclaimed him overlord, and absolutely destroyed all of their walls to say ‘if you dare to try and rise against me again, I’ll return and you won’t even have your precious walls to help you then.’

Having an Olmec civilization settle a town called San Lorenzo would be like Rome settling a town and calling it Istanbul..

I like how getting the science star in neolithic era requires your entire tribe to spread out in curiosity about their surroundings instead of hanging close together for strength

I really hope the battle system allows for smaller numbers of bigger armies with combined arms. That was always one of the biggest issues with civ games, late game you'd spend half an hour just moving the endless hoards of units needed to do anything and each one made very little sense due to the fact that armies arent single squads of people with the same weapon >

I hope this will become a series when the full game comes out. It seems really fun, and i hope it is something you would enjoy doing considering you like Civ.

You should have placed La Venta just north of the river instead of just south of it. Then the invading soldiers would have to attack from the river and lose 3 strength. It’s like baby walls for the city until you get real walls.

Would love to see a full playthrough of this, especially since so much has changed in the last year.

I think you can disband the scouts to be pop in a city and then build a more advanced unit from it.

Btw every pop in a city also gives +2 influence. And that farmers quarter was a waste, since your special district counts as a farmers quarter and is cheaper/better.

OoooOooooo: I hope it has competent AI with varied motivations and strategies. I know I'm in the minority, but I've just been playing games too long and eventually I notice I'm going to win no matter what and I just set the game down. It's still possible to balance them so a 12 year old who's never played that kind of game can easily win, you just buff them in normal mode the way Civ buffs the AI at harder difficulties, I just need it to be balanced around the hard difficulty to even maybe rustle my jimmies.

I am so looking forward to when this game releases and a good chunk of the channels I'm subbed to all have playthroughs of it (hopefully including this one). Can't get enough of this game.

Hadn't watched too much of this game yet, but I'm seeing some Stellaris-esque ideas, some Rome: Total War ideas with population being taken for military units, and then it's apparently made by the same people as the Endless games?

Hey! Edgar Allen Poe being a leader is another fairly direct nod to Civilization. Edgar Allen Poe is from Baltimore, Maryland. Firaxis Games, the creator of Civ, is located just north of Baltimore, still in Maryland.

This might just be me, but I really hope you’ll be able to stay nomadic for a very long time, maybe even until the late game. Nomadic cultures really get shafted in history as being primitive and uncultured because they don’t leave much of an archaeological trace, but they’re actually very complex and interesting and extremely highly developed. After all, horses were tamed by nomads, and livestock may have come from them as well.

I thought this game had a Yuval Harari vibe and then in the cutscene "and markets begin the exchange of goods, services and -- most important -- rumors and hearsay." Confirmed it

I only played Endless Legend, which I thought was brilliant. I can see a lot of that game built into Humankind, and that's really promising.

Very well explained mechanics. Good job. I really like these videos where Jon knows really what he's doing and where it's very informative lecture, rather than just goofing around and being silly on purpose.

Dang, Civ 7 is lookin good

I've watched a few Humankind videos and this is by far the most informative video I've seen. It clearly explains everything, nothing is rushed, Jon points out things you might not think about (like not rushing to adopt a culture), it's well paced. I now have a much clearer picture of what the game is all about!

Jon a bunch of youtubers are in the game as secret/bonus ai opponents and they have special ai programing to make them play just like the youtubers they are based on.

Yeah Green is a real bastard, I think the devs deliberately put an aggro AI right next to the player to stress early defense. For best effect, you should stick around in the Neolithic era and hunt to get more scouts; try to have 7 or 8 when you go Ancient so you can keep 4 on defending your south. You can also disband units to get population. Green also likes to march through your land and settle on your other side, so for best effect you should attack and kill all their little scout forces. Wall them off in that peninsula and never let up the pressure. That one warrior didn't take part in the battle because you need a certain tech to enable in-battle reinforcements.

Every leader has a unique outfit for each era? Sounds cool, but making new leaders would be harder, right?

I am so happy that Jon decided to play this game!

Time to treat this as a learning experience and time to ... Start again.

Seems nice, apart from the fact that as soon as the tiny neolithic tribe built a tiny encampment, farmland magically pops up in every direction. Awful, especially as they seem to try and stick to a more accurate historical progression than Civ.

Ah good, a video to yell at my screen while Jon carelessly attacks with nearly dead scouts or fails to move the most damaged ones away to safety and lets them die, turning the tide of the war into the favor of his enemies.

It's kind of weird to have continent-spanning megacities though, isn't it? I suppose it could be fun but it sounds pretty unrealistic...

ya know what, I'm glad you played this Jon because I've been wondering about this....and goddamn, this does look interesting. Love Civ but recently with the broken ass status of it I've been kind of turned off.....this, as long as it's fairly decent, may be the kick in the ass Civ needs.

From someone who loved civ 4, was ok with civ 5, and stopped playing because civ 6 came about... I definitely know what game I'll play instead of the Civilization games from now on. Just 10 minutes into the game and I'm already sold; so much crap Civ fails at\is annoying that this game gets right... Doesn't amaze me that its from the same creators of Endless Space.

So how does switching civilizations/cultures work? Do the Olmecs just decide: "Nah, we´re Goths now."? Is there a benefit? Penalty? (I think I saw some sort of benefit for "elevating?" the same culture to new era...)
