If consciousness is purely materialistic, a side-effect of the brain, then in principle, we should be able to construct a brain-like computer that is conscious. A group of researchers who straddle the boundary between neuroscience and computer science are currently working to build artificial brains (out of computer chips or supercomputers) that specifically replicate the biological organization of the neurons and synapses of the human brain, in order to see if they can simulate the brain's properties: from its intelligent problem-solving behavior, to its "consciousness". Comparing reality to a computer program is quite clever because it also points to a creator. Because that computer program didn't create itself and if you open that computer you won't find its operating system or evidence of a creator. You might say because you can't see it that it doesn't exist but if you figure out how to turn the computer on you will see it

Imagine if physicists embraced psychedelics. If you are looking for a flashlight past time space, maybe try the substances that peel away its layers. Not saying all the answers are there, but if they were more open I bet a few ideas would pop up.

It seems strange that he is willing to throw out current paradigms of physics but not those of evolutionary theory. I wonder how he accounts for human consciousness / metacognition emerging from incremental "random" mutation of physical agents, if the word "physical" no longer means anything?

What I find interesting, in terms of your opening statement, is we still fail to realize we know nothing. So, in biology, there wasn't any theory suggesting there was more to the cell than we see, and yet, recently AI looking at live cells doubled the number of artifacts inside the cell! How cool is that! That means, all of our present biological models are incomplete. I wouldn't throw out those books, but seriously, there are some overlays missing!

The more you push on Hoffman's idea, the more far-fetched rationalizations you have to make to justify believing it.

the fact that our perception is ordering our interaction/understanding of reality without having us perceive all of reality's consitutent parts at every instant does not make it 'unreal', that is an absurd posit, precisely because we are able to break things down and assemble larger interactions upon examination, also fundamentally a function of our perceptions and ability to deconstruct our own machinations of perception.

The truth is so complicated that we first have to live countless lives in order to later be able to cope permanently without our physical body with our pure spirit and the tool of mind/consciousness and to find our way in this form of existence. Everyone knows how easy it is to get distracted while trying to meditate.

Intuitively, it seems necessary for human beings to be detached from reality in order for human beings to be able to be animate and human thought to transcend physical laws and for humans to work collectively in a manner that is synergistic in a manner that violates physical law.

The process of our eyes projecting an upside-down image onto the retina is a result of the optics involved in how light enters the eye and is focused onto the retina by the lens. Light rays from an object enter the eye and are refracted by the cornea and lens, forming an inverted image on the retina at the back of the eye. However, the brain processes this information and interprets it in a way that allows us to perceive the world in the correct orientation. This is because our brains interpret visual information in a way that is useful for navigating and interacting with our environment. So, even though the image projected onto the retina is upside-down, our perception of the world is upright due to the brain's processing of visual signals.

They make the same anthropomorphic mistake that most get caught in by overlooking the microbial as the basis for Life-the fact that there is NOTHING human within the meat-bag we call a body. The human body is comprised roughly of 100 trillion independent beings working together. 80% of the cells in a body are not even "human" (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites). The remaining 20% of the cells are also "independent" life forms (blood, nerve, skin, muscle) because you can give "your" blood to another-accept an organ from another-grow your skin in a petri dish without requiring "your" body. Essentially there is NOTHING human within a human body. So the positioning of inquiry from "Who am I" should transition to "What am I?" for deeper relevance. The aspect we identify as "self" or "ego" is more like a communication "app" for the collective consciousness of the system.

Imagine if humans where never born with eyes ever. We would go through life never knowing what we are missing. And try to explain sight to someone who's never seen anything. It's nearly impossible. I wonder if there's something like that now that we can't comprehend fully.

This was so well explained, our human bodies has developed the "UI" that is fitting for survival purposes only. In Buddhism/Hinduism this is referred to as Maya. Amazing insight

Donald has one of my three favorite theories of everything! They all are basically theorizing the same thing: Cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman says our senses are a user interface, computer engineer and nuclear scientist Bernardo Kastrup calls it a dashboard, and physicist Thomas Campbell says the body is an avatar and we get a datastream. They all posit that consciousness is what is fundamental. Superfascinating stuff. I won’t be surprised if they find it’s all some kind of evolved holofractographic matrix type of thing.

Finally an inteligent interviewer who knows how to ask the right questions and clarifications, fascinating.

This is just a gentle way to say that no one knows and everyone’s been wasting their time making up complicated words and trying to figure it out. 🤷‍♂️

There's an inherent conundrum in these theories. If human is detached from reality, not able to see, feel or understand it, then all theories posed in this interview are as delusional as the human mind is thinking to know what reality is. If we cannot know reality, then every discussion we may have about it, is inherently futile.

I'm so so glad this man is describing the truth in a comprehensible way. I actually tried to use a similar analogy, where game characters are using game tools to define their world, totally unaware of the code. If you split a game brick in half, whatever the smallest pieces are are still manifested by the code. You can't physically split a brick and reach code, because you're only operating within the interface.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we would fill football stadiums with people engaged in this type of thing, versus let’s say sport. Cheering spirituality, cheering philosophy, cheering science; things that make life amazing. Sport is fun, but this type of thing is what propelled humanity on and on and on. Wonderful stuff.

I appreciate the analogy that compares the simulated universe to a computer interface for sending email. It makes a lot of sense that the universe might be far too complex for our brains to navigate, thus we need something simpler that will ensure our survival at every moment.

I’ve always wondered if what I’m perceiving is the reality of what is actually happening. That somehow my perception is different than everyone one else is perceiving and those individuals each have different perceptions and even if 5 people are standing around talking to each other that each person is different and our brains correct the conversation and the scene for each individual. Who Knows?

Nonsense. Humans looked up and saw the moon for thousands upon thousands of years. Then a group of humans looked up, saw the moon, and decided to go there. Then we did. We all perceived the same exact object in the sky - and then landed on it. If that isn't "reality" then you're floating an idea no better than god or sky fairies - something utterly unfalsifiable that merely sounds profound.

Wonderful. Thank you. It seems to me that the Non-Dual philosophies, like Dzogchen, Advaita Vedanta, and Buddhism, have been pointing to this same truth for millennia. The key to "experiencing" this truth directly lies in non-cognitive consciousness, i.e. being without thinking because thinking is the source of space and time. Remove the story telling, the narrative, the beliefs, the judgments, the assessments, the planning, and the identification with a separate self, which are all the products of thought, and one can directly experience non-spatial, atemporal "existence". Compellingly, I do not need to prove this because it is available to anyone who wishes to "discover" it for themselves. Unfortunately, however, this truth is ineffable - which renders my explanation above insufficient. The best we can do I'm afraid is continue to point to it with the hope that people give it a go and find it for themselves.

A Matrix is a (material trick) Simulation Game for SOULS for challenge, entertainment and experience. It is a frequency, energy and vibration Game and a pay to play Game with rules and clues. It’s as simple as this. When we volunteer to come here (and we do volunteer) we come to have a human experience, and that involves this dense matter reality and linear time (which btw is a complete illusion). If you want to be a human, you must be ‘human’: that means not having knowledge of what you actually are or where you actually came from. And anyway, if you could remember, the homesickness and longing to be with God again would tear you apart. This reality is an illusion inside an illusion inside an illusion. We come here on a tour of duty, to learn and experience. And when you accept this, all this crap about trying to make sense of it all with science and physics is pointless. You’re trying to understand an illusion. Pointless.

When do you come to the point where this is all irrelevant? and just living life, and not breaking it down a million ways is better, and actually more intelligent. It's almost as if he's saying "meditating is coming in to tune with the current moment which is reality" which is true, it can help, but you don't need anything to get to that point, it's like he's addicted to the pursuit. If you want to be in the moment, be in the moment. We don't need to dissect consciousness and how our minds build our realities to know that. Meditation seems to be fully appreciated more by people who think way too much, but the thinking too much is not a good thing, it's a tool to help us, nothing more. I think what people are really confused about is our measurements. We take them as abject reality over actual reality. Almost like the clock is rising the sun, rather than the sun as an object that inspired a measurement of time.
