Speak as little as possible about yourself. Keep busy with your own affairs and not those of others. Avoid curiosity (she is referring to wanting to know things that should not concern you.) Do not interfere in the affairs of others. Accept small irritations with good humor. Do not dwell on the faults of others. Accept censures even if unmerited. Give in to the will of others. Accept insults and injuries. Accept contempt, being forgotten and disregarded. Be courteous and delicate even when provoked by someone. Do not seek to be admired and loved. Do not protect yourself behind your own dignity. Give in, in discussions, even when you are right. Choose always the more difficult task.

In a world bloated with sin due to original sin and our own fault, we find ourselves with a disproportionate view of ourselves. This view needs to be severely cut down through thinking less of ourselves. Furthermore, being humble should enable us to have no problem with this notion. If you find yourself struggling with it, well, that's a bad sign. Moreover, if you understood your theology and knew what we were made of and from, then this wouldn't be so hard to comprehend.

When you capable of hearing the truth, and you don't act on it when you hear it, prepare for pain with no remedy. You will never ever get it out your mind.

CHOOSE The HARDER TASK...that resonates with me. It's very powerful. It comes back to working hard through your life. The human spirit I believe is ornately LAZY. A Fine electrical energy ( spirit) lugging around a bag of bones and tissue. You must overcome the compulsion to take the easy way out. It will advance your spiritual journey no end. And GIVE IN TO OTHERS...this too is very difficult for most humans. You almost need to work out what it means but it's about imposing your will on others.people see it as a WEAKNESS but it's the opposite. It shows great strength of character. What a person. Such lessons we can only hope rub off on us. Being humble , in my books, is third to LOVE and RESPECT

Humility can be overdone. There are "spiritual" books out there thst say that the way to humility is to constantly degrade yourself and call yourself "a worm and not a man". I tried that method for years and it does not work. This method says that humility will become a little captain in your soul, commanding all of the other virtues, but in reality it becomes the father of dispair, hatred of God, drunkeness, drug use, sexual promiscuity and utter darkness and emptiness. Humility is important but not near as unimportant as some "spiritual" writers say. It is most certainly not the foundation of the spiritual life. Much more helpful in obtaining true humility is to recite daily the Litany of Humility. "Humility is not thinking less of yourself. Humility is thinking of yourself less." --C.S. Lewis

Delete the thought of earthly poverty of starvation and financial incompetence. It's called 'poverty' when you choose to offer a prayer or something for a sacrifice or thanks giving, you must offer it self-less-ly... and when you come to Him and pray, come to Him like you are absolutely nothing... like a beggar that has nothing to offer but his faith--not a single treasure that is owned by this earth. Like a child that comes home empty and helpless---humble and not proud. In this way, we are inviting God to work for our spiritual life.

God does not need our poverty or anything else from us, and to imagine that He does is an act or symptom of pride itself. We aren't that important. God did just fine before He created us. Spend your time loving God and doing good works for neighbor and that will be humility enough. God wants (but does not need) souls who love Him, not souls who grovel in front of Him.God is not on an ego trip. "Humility is not thinking less of yourself. @johnny bhai I didn't mean to disparage Mother Teresa. I meant to point out the catch-22 of humility----sure, humility helps us to see who we are before God, but quite often when we see how lowly and sinful we are, are we not more likely to avoid higher callings? I know that Padre Pio, the night before his Ordination to the priesthood, almost backed out because he knew himself to be unworthy of such an high honor.

George Penton Who would hand down the faith through the magisterium of the Church as instructed by our Lord if we had no priests? They take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Is that not humility? Yes, they are human and can fall into sin. However, they know God's love and through repentance will receive His mercy. Pray for priests and religious.
@aidanlisney5546

George, that type of fatalistic thinking is dangerous. Why stop there? Why not say that about any follower of Jesus? How could anyone have the audacity to call themselves a Christian and pick up their cross daily? The point is this: wearing a habit doesn't say anything about humility or pride. It says the same thing a wedding band does: a personal vocation. All sin is rooted in pride, so we're all hypocrites. We all have to work through it with the help of the Lord.
@alisonerekson3292
@alisonerekson3292 5 лет назад
This is an excellent question. This is a question that some of the wisest figures in the Church have spent a great deal of time and ink addressing throughout history. The first part of your question is how they tend to answer "I am a worm and not a man/woman" Mother Alexandra of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox monastery in Pennsylvania wrote in her book Our Father: "Such as I am full of fault and ineptitude, take me, use me, where most I can be of use. Let me, like the rain worm, do my share in moving some grain of soil in Thy vineyard; that I may partake in some small way in Thy redeeming work." Yes, we are worms. We are full of faults. But even the worms have some small role to fulfill in God's creation. We must also fulfill our small roles. One can also express vainglory through excessive self-abasement. "My unworthiness is more important than the work I am supposed to complete" is really just another way of saying "I am more important than the work I am supposed to complete." Imagine a person who says, "If I can't make as much money as Bill Gates at my job, I won't work" that is the same as a monk or nun saying "If I can't have [pick an often venerated saint]'s calling, I won't fulfill any calling." If one is married, one cannot live like a monk. If one is a monk, one is not expected to bring children into the world and raise them. Everyone is expected to fulfill their own small role whether it is as "great" as the hermit monk who fights logismi with thoughts like "I am a worm" or whether it's getting up a 2am to feed your crying baby or talking your parishioner through her cancer scare instead of getting to a coffee you really really "need" right now. I can't remember which book I read this in, but St. Anthony the Great (the father of all the monks) said that one should strive to gain discernment before humility, because it is so easy to fool oneself into thinking one is acquiring humility when what one is really acquiring is vainglory. I can't do this answer justice with a few quotes. Read everything you can find from the Desert Fathers and Mothers, and go find a monastic who has acquired prayer and ask. Read every book quoting the desert fathers you can get, and remember, no fasting or prayer regiments that are stricter than what your fellow parishioners do unless someone (living) more experienced in fasting and prayer is directing you. I believe the quote goes something like "He who has no one as a spiritual father has a fool as a spiritual father"
@georgepenton808
@georgepenton808 4 года назад
All I am saying is that humility is way oversold as a virtue. Loving God and loving and serving neighbor in a self-sacrificial way, that is humble enough. Whenever I read or hear some priest, nun, or "saint" say, oh, I'm a worm and not a man, I am disgusted. If they realky thought of themselves this way that would resign from the priesthoid or religious life in a heartbeat. The Anglican C. S. Lewis put all those "holy", "humble" Catholic saints to shame when he simply said "humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less". He might be the only writer on the subject who ever really understood true humility.

George Penton Is it not prideful to be upset over this? Humble yourself that you may overcome your ego controlling you being bothered (“disgusted”) by the value others put on humility.

Did anybody ever stop to think that if Mother Teresa truly had humility she would have never become a nun in the first place? She would have thought of herself as too unworthy.

That is not true. I don't think the form matters! Whether nun, wife, daughter, sister, mother, businesswoman, lover, princess, queen, leader, slave.... it's all form and all that matters is Purpose. Mother Teresa's soul chose this form as 'Nun' because that's the form that allowed her the most forgiveness opportunities in this lifetime. What is interesting to me is not how humble Mother Teresa was, but where YOUR mind is at when you ask that question. As if trying to find imperfection in others somehow makes you feel better about yourself. Instead of feeling good about yourself regardless of what others do or do not do. I think if Mother's life can offer you anything, for you, it would be that question: Why does Mother T's seeming lack of humility matter to you? Where in ME am I not being humble when I judge others as not being authentic (which is what you are saying about Mother T). How, in my daily life and thoughts, am I not being authentic to myself and therefore also not towards others?

@@stmichl9433 Basically, what I am asking is what is the real nature of humility? If it really means a recognition of our own unworthiness how can anyone dare to be a priest or nun or to take any leadership role whatsoever? This was not meant as an attack on Mother Teresa.

George Penton I think you're misunderstanding the nature of humility in the spiritual sense and conflating it with a worldly or egoic idea of humility which is about unworthiness and smallness. The spiritual notion of humility is a very different one to the one you're talking about.

@@stmichl9433 You may be right but all the material I have read on that subject suggests that if a person isn't groveling before God and other people, especially authority figures, then they are not being humble.

Dear brother, I don’t know if I’ll be able to explain what humility means, but From what I’ve read I believe it is when you trust more in God that in yourself and when trying to respond to his call you place your faith in his mercy. Because when he asks something from us he gives us his help, his grace and that is how many saints reach such levels of Sainthood, not from their effort but from Gods mercy.
