Many species of hummingbird produce distinctive sounds with their tail-feathers, which flutter in airflow. Here, I show some of their displays along with the sounds they make. I tested hummingbird tail-feathers in a wind tunnel to determine how the sounds are made. This video shows the results of the study, and includes animations and high-speed videos of feathers in a wind tunnel. Photos courtesy Anand Varma, www.varmaphoto.com

Tonight on TCM there was a sound designer Ben Burtt talking about an old Robin Hood movie. He wanted to know how the arrows made an almost musical sound because his didn't. Apparently Howard Hill used some particular feathers for the fins which were larger than typical arrows. The feathers had little bare tips on the ends and so he had Hill make him those arrows which produced musical-like tones in flight.

Thank you very much for this presentation! I've been observing hummers for years and years, and always recognized the sounds that were coming from feather vibration during the mating displays- and thanks to you, all my questions are answered! Really- brilliant research, and presentation... Thanks again!!

Wonderful! I love watching the Anna's hummingbirds here in Victoria and wondered about that chirp they make on their spectacular dives.

Impressive! I just say a hummingbird with a wide tail feather laid out! I would have sworn the feathers were white with a bit of black on top... I totally thought it was a male being impressive...nice job because I feel in love!!

We have a little place called The Hummingbird Sanctuary where people can visit with and observe dozens of hummingbirds at our feeders. We do a lot of education about the birds, your research will be incorporated in our presentation!

I wondered how they made that song and the chirps they do seem to give a wiggle when making noise in a tree.

@azNephi over the past several years I have personally worked with all of these species in the field. So, the feathers are from my field work. Hummingbirds are protected by law; in order to do my research, I apply for research permits from government agencies, such as the US Fish & Wildlife Service (for species in the US)

Very impressive. I posted a slo motion hummingbird video today and there was a low hum which I thought was from the wings. I have a birdsnflowers blog that I try to give accurate information. Would you listen to the video and tell me if it is wings or tail feathers? Thanks. My blog is Love Hummingbirds
