ALEX Salmond has sensationally claimed wannabe First Minister Humza Yousaf skipped Holyrood's landmark gay marriage vote due to "religious pressure" - despite Mr Yousaf explicitly denying this.
The explosive remarks to Sky News raised further questions tonight over alleged hypocrisy and bookies' favourite Mr Yousaf’s credibility.
Mr Salmond's intervention comes after a row over leadership rival Kate Forbes's remarks last week that she would have opposed same-sex marriage in Holyrood's 2014 vote if she was an MSP at the time, in line with her hardline Christian faith.
Mr Yousaf later capitalised on her remarks, saying he backs gay marriage and insisting: “I don’t use my faith as a basis of legislation.”
But rivals later pointed out Mr Yousaf missed the final vote in February 2014, as he had arranged a meeting that clashed with the vote.
Ex Nats minister Alex Neil - who was responsible for the bill - said Mr Yousaf swerved the passing of the historic law due to “pressure from the mosque”.
