The Hungarian Folk Tales stem from original folktale collections, every episode has its special authentic ornamentation. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes.

Matthias, the famous and righteous king of Hungarians, orders a shepherd to his palace to play a joke on him, and to reward him afterwards. The guards only let him in after he promises that he will share the present with them. The shepherd asks for a beating, and lets the guards have all of it. The king does not provide the shepherd with a spoon at dinner, but he manages to eat has soup with the crust of his bread. After finishing, he says: be called a dog, who does not eat his spoon!

The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

Hah! Don't mess with the sheppard! I love how the messenger's horse managed to lift all for hooves off the ground at once when the dog came sniffing around its feet. Then later, I loved how the dog tried to chew on the guards' legs when they were both wearing armor! I must say, the dog took it well.

I've heard a version of this story before, except the shepherd asks to be whipped and not just beaten. At the end as well, the king says something along the lines of, "The beating was your reward for your hospitality, now here's your reward for being a great guest." And gives him some gold/jewels.

I like this ending a lot! I was imagining that because the shepherd's reward went to the two guards, a large (actual) reward would be given to the shepherd's dog.

He most certainly did get a reward cause the Shepard had weeded out 2 clearly corrupt guards for the king and no doubt made the king suspicious of what other bribes they might’ve taken from people entering the city or the castle; after all King Matthias did have his own enemies and more than one monarch have lost their life to a greedy and corrupt guard.

Mine is the mayor's daughter. There's also a version where she's so clever that he marries her. They have a disagreement, so he sends her back to her father. She asks to keep the most valuable thing in the castle to her. The king agrees. So she drugs the king and takes her husband with her back to her father's house, "because my husband is the most valuable to me."

Yes, he is. King Matthias, the Just may be the most popular king of Hungary. He kept all the nobles and magnets at bay and let the smallfolk thrive. His main trope as these tales shows that he is wandering the countryside in disguise, making shenanigans, rewarding the clever and diligent ones, and punishing those who abuse their power. There is another cartoon series dedicated to him, unfortunately still without English subtitles.

The Indian folk tails which I heard growing up, there the man who was to be rewarded asked for 200 lashes so the shepherd in this story is very generous cause the guards only got 25 lashes each

FYI - The music was too loud in this one! There was indeed a King Matthias Corvina of Hungary. As Matthias the Just, the monarch who wandered among his subjects in disguise, he remains a popular hero of Hungarian folk tales. He reigned fron 1458 - 1490. Generally a good guy who promoted merit over elitism. Although in this story, he was a jerk! He ate a poor man's food, then played a trick on him, and gave him nothing due to his corrupt guards. Should have sent him home enriched! Tsk, Tsk, Matthias, that was not nice.

In India we have the same story of a king who was close to his subject (Akbar) and a poor guy (Birbal)who was invited to the Royal Palace. The guards asked to share his rewards. So Birbal asked Akbar to be flogged. The guards were flogged and Birbal was made a minister in the court. He was very clever and one of the 9 jewels of Akbar's court.

The shepard should have just told the King what the guards said and he would have just either punished the guards and given all of the reward (of money) to the man or just not allow him to give his money to the guards. Or he could have done what the story shows, but STILL give the money to the Shepard.... I feel bad for the shepard.
