Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is paying a surprise trip to China, following visits to Ukraine and Russia. He says he's on a Ukraine peace mission, after his country took over the rotating presidency of the European Union. But EU officials insist Mr Orban has no mandate to speak for the bloc. He's says he's heading for Washington next.
For more on this, we talk to Alicja Bachulska. She is a policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations and expert on Chinese foreign policy and China-EU relations. She joins us from Warsaw.

A quote by AP: “The number of countries that can talk to both warring sides is diminishing,” Orbán said. “Hungary is slowly becoming the only country in Europe that can speak to everyone.” Looks very much like he's doing these visits in his capacity as a president of Hungary.

Commentator is unbelievably shallow and ill-informed. Orban's visit to Kyiv, Moscow, Beijing and then Washington is clearly a diplomatic peace mission, most likely with a lot of groundwork already laid ahead, rather than just a random act of self-promotion as suggested by the commentator. Hungary, although a relatively small country, can play a significant role precisely because it can and does act independently from the bloc politics of the day.
