Hungerford & the Idyllic Trails of the North Wessex Downs Cycle Ride

An idyllic ride from Reading in England along the Kennet & Avon Canal to Newbury and ending in Hungerford taking in the North Wessex Countryside.
This is a trail idea I'd written down last year that I planned to do during the summer. While I did this ride in May it had that dusty hot summer feel about it, though with plenty of humidity off the flourishing nettles along the canal tow path.
Could this be one of the most idyllic rides I've done to date? It was certainly very beautiful and peaceful, especially around half way through the later trail between Newbury and Hungerford. The trail feels much quieter with less people, calm and with birds of prey over head. It was very special.
Some of the trail has quite rough surfaces where its basically grass with hard-packed dry mud, some which is quite bumpy so it's worth keeping this in mind though it wasn't for a particularly long time.
Newbury was a nice Market Town and certainly makes a good place to stop for a few hours with plenty to do and places to grab a coffee. Hungerford is a quiet town and much less tourist orientated but there are things to see and do though its much smaller than Newbury.
I really enjoyed this trail and got a bit of a tan despite using factor 50.
I hope you enjoy this ride.
The route can be found on Strava along with most other rides.

In a way its very relaxing having someone else do all the pedalling while I sit back and enjoy it all. But somehow I miss the enjoyment of being there. Once more, thank you.

Sounds brilliant, especially avoiding the hills, haha. They can really test a day out on a bike ☺️

Superbly filmed in perfect (June) weather. I'd be tempted to pick this up at Aldermaston Lock - leaving the car somewhere safe. If you like canals I'd recommend you park the car at Maplin Park in Langley. Half a mile away is the Slough branch of the Grand Union canal - in 90 minutes you are in Brentford Lock and 10 minutes from Kew Green - for luncheon.

Oh thanks very much. I have something planned sort of for that area a little further on, mostly likely next year now so I'll keep that in mind as I might be able to join it all up. ☺️🚴🏻‍♀️

Superb cinematography, thanks for sharing 🙏 I'm surprised by the number of path & bank washouts at the Reading end Fobney Island is a lovely weir - I've not seen that design before. I guess it minimises turbulence and maximises aeration 🤔 +27:23 whoaaa that water has an unnatural colour - blue-green algae ? +32:56 using a vehicle sized gate, for a kissing gate, is a clever idea - good for people with large accoutrements - cyclists, prams, backpackers etc +49:33 Charolais cattle? +1:06:52 Red Kite - they seem to be in most southern English Downland areas now. A massively successful reintroduction that has devastated other species. Reading to Newbury was more managed and municipalised, Newbury to Hungerford was more natural.

Thanks very much. Very kind. Yes a lovely weir, I never thought there would be a technical reason for it. Very nice though. Yes that lake was very green, either blue green algae like you said or may be some kind of lime pollution? I gave the camera a good rinse. I can’t remember the first time I’ve seen a full size gate like that, it’s really unusual isn’t it. I think you might be right about the cattle. I’ve learnt something new. I didn’t know that about the affects the Red Kites have had. I always seem to see them when on the M4, usually After Swindon, reading, Bracknell sort of place. I totally agree. Despite it being the same canal, Newbury Hungerford was much more rural and rustic. I really like that.

And BOOM! She's back with a full length epic that MGM studios would be proud of, took me 2 sittings to consume it! 😉 Glad to see your back to full fitness and out on the bike again. 👍 I rode a good bit of that path about 5 years ago when I found myself in Burghfield with time to kill (Possibly at the lake you sent the camera for a swim in) , you sure had better weather than me for your ride: Very wet and muddy trail and a cold misty day, I rode it as a out and back but didn't go as far as you. Once you get away from the M4 background noise , there's some nice tranquil stretches. Blue honey is a new one on me! Heather ? is the only thing I can think of in North Wales. I will have pale green honey later this summer, as my bees are going mad for the oilseed rape thats over the back of my Garden. Take care.

Haha. 🤭 yes it was way too long and for that I apologise to everyone. I came back with too much footage and it too way too long to put together as well. I can imagine how muddy it would be during or after rain, just by how bumpy the dried mud was on the more gnarly wild bits of the trail were. I can’t remember what flower the lady said they were, could have been heather I suppose. Wow, you have your own bees and honey! That must be amazing. I have bees in my garden, sometimes leaf cutters. I’ve put up a bee hotel for them but they’ve not used it yet. Thanks for the feedback ☺️🚴🏻‍♀️

@@MadisonTen I was pulling your leg, long films are good. I consume RU-vid in a different way to most people, I would imagine and it tends to be in short spells. Bridleways are mega churned up by horses atm, if when it ever dries up, it will be a bone rattling ride for sure.....

I’m the same. Anything over a hour would be two sittings, may be over 30mins if time was short. But I did think it was too long before I put it out.we will see how it goes in the future ☺️

A great video that i really enjoyed Madison, beautiful weather, scenery, wildlife, and fauna. I sure your video will inspire other's to do that route, and as other watchers have said it's interesting that this route could be extended quite a long way, and imagine doing an extended adventure along with overnight wild camps wonderful. Newbury and Hungerford look really nice, so thanks for sharing 👏 👋

Wow - that was quite a ride! A lot longer than the little jaunts I do along the canals! I've never been to the K&A and its unlikely I'll ever take my boat there, but it does look pretty special - so thanks for showing us. As always, I really loved the piano playing / composition - at just before, and after, 60 minutes in - it sounds very professional. And what a lovely way to finish - loved the wine glass idea. Altogether, another very well planned and thought-out video which deserves loads of views! 👍

A very nice place. I’m glad I did it. Expensive on the train though. Yes route 4, so I guess you could eventually join up to the bath to bristol trail, then up to the Severn Crossing, I’m not sure which route that takes but I’m guessing it uses back roads, and then into Wales, all the way to the west I imagine!

Cool video! Although I'm watching wishing the paths were wider so you didn't have to keep stopping when people pass by 😂

Thanks! Yes some canal tow paths can be really narrow. I guess the time to go would be early morning on a rainy cold day but it wouldn’t be quite so idyllic 🤭🚴🏻‍♀️

What tyres do you use
@MadisonTen
@MadisonTen 4 месяца назад
I use Specialized tyres, on the back Fast Trak Sport, size 29 x 2.1 (I went up in width a little when I changed it for new). On the front Ground Control size 29 x 2.1. They are both an off road tyre as such but not too aggressive so more suited for cross country trail riding, pretty much what I do.
