Hunt For BIG Canal Perch! New PB?

This video Is all about my hunt for a big canal perch! The weather is still pretty cold and the method for the day would be slow jigging. Gently hopping and twitching the baits across the canal bed. Mostly fishing with creature baits I was hoping to find the deeper areas, wider sections and baitfish to in turn find the big perch. Inevitably the jack pike turned up to the party early on, but did I manage to catch a big canal stripy?

Honestly mate, i've been fishing a long time but i've never seen anyone with your level of finesse when lure fishing. The tiny delicate movements of the lure and the pauses and twitches make it seem like you have a sixth sense of when the fish are about to take it. Amazing. I've had Pike to 26lb on lures but i've learnt loads from you.

Cracking perch and not wanting to sound like a snowflake but the way you were holding it by the Gill looked a little off tbh, especially tilting it to show its belly. Wouldn't normally say anything like this but that didn't sit right with me.
@Bazzabilo

No need for the concern in this instance. Thats the best way to handle a perch of this size, in the water fish are effectively weightless so if you hold a fish this size from the bottom the weight of the fish would push in to all its organs… gilling a fish has the weight evened out from the middle of its structure. The worst way would be to lip a perch like they do bass in the states. Chris is hands down the most knowledgeable angler on youtube and always has fish care as paramount. It does my head in when he has to justify why hes ‘hand lining’ a fish or using the soft grass as opposed to a mat. He shouldnt have to answer to anybody with what hes done for the angling community

@@Bazzabilo I'm not talking about hand lining and matts, literally no problem with those. Truthfully, your explanation of how he's holding it is mostly nonesense though to justify how he's holding it. Gills are not designed to be load bearing or maneuver a fish, he literally twisted the entire perch round from the Gill to show the belly not supporting any of the weight. It wasn't held like that for fish welfare, it was just to get the best shot of the fish possible.

Brilliant video as we have come to expect from GF, I agree one of the best channels on RU-vid. The waters you fish seem in pristine condition. interested to know if you have any concerns about the condition of the rivers/ canals you fish due to pollution? asking only after watching Paul Whitehouse's documentary on the state of rivers in the UK, which was worrying.

In my area we have alot of smaller to mid size damns for the steel mills. They are loaded with tons of perch. We catch most of them suspended in deep water. Usually suspended between 20 and 40 feet in 60 to 80 feet deep water. Use depth bobbers and creek chubs. Sometimes jigg heads with chubs also. Thease perch are usually about 14inches and fat like footballs. Its crazy cuz they travel in massive schools. Also catch alot of big trout suspended in deep water.

See I used a different system to find and then target big perch. I cast a very light link ledger with a worm on a small hook on an extremely light tip rod. This is cast around the clock every 5 minutes in a swim until I see a rattle on the tip. The purpose of this is just for searching, not to hook up. If there is a rattle, the float rod comes out and I invest some time getting through them on the float and worm (so hard to connect with them on the top). If no rattles come after searching the swim, I move. I find there is always a rattle on the worm and tip if there are Perch about, regardless of weather or time of day. They just can’t resist. Then you find out if a big one is home on the float with a lobworm. Any big perch in the shoal will generally find that lobworm first. I’ve landed 11 big perch ranging from 1lb1oz to 2lb 9oz off the canal in this manner this winter, even in the worst days of weather
