It’s sad that most Americans know him as a caricature rather than the journalistic and literary genius he was. Best, most inventive, and hilarious fucking prose in English written journalism. HST invented an entire genre that went against every rule of journalism…. It’s now being taught in every journalism classroom across the nation. In person, HST was undoubtedly hilarious. He turned addictions into quirks and self destruction into art. But damn… almost no one reads his shit.
yo wtf are you talking about, the most common books I see in the west coast in the united states are The Bible, Fear & Loathing, and A Clockwork Orange.
My favorite Depp movie. I feel like the reason why it got panned so hard by critics is because the movie only makes sense if you’ve been there. I’ve certainly dosed before and the movie just captures that whole experience of being fucked up better than any other movie I’ve seen.
I would wake up the next afternoon like “I paid to feel like that?” In the beginning its fun at the bars then it just turn into you at home by yourself paranoid to fuck.. lol.. Do not miss that at all.@@HarryDetective
You want to laugh. Me and my friends are from California and the next day be like why the fuck do we do this. Standing at the peep hole being very quiet and just tweaking. So we decided to film ourselves the next time we got high so we could watch it the next day. When I watched the video I never did coke again. It’s fun in the beginning at the bar a little bump then it grows to some toxic shit in a hotel or your home, @@CaptainnWalrus
For those asking, it’s from a BBC documentary where they take him back to Las Vegas briefly. It’s done very poorly, but some of the footage is great. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1INj-0zYHJQ.html
What’s this recording from? It’s been a while since I’ve seen Fear and Loathing, but now these videos make me wanna know more about Thompson. I should’ve read his stuff a while ago
I started with his book - Hell's Angels. I got into his later novels that were more a compendium of his endless notes and scribblings and they are fun reads. I recommend any of his works really, but pick up Hell's Angels and The Great Shark Hunt. Good stuff.
The big ones: Hell's Angels is one of the most straight out, deep and honest biographies I've ever read - fantastic journalism. Fear and Loathing Campaign Trail '72 is a must read for anyone with any interest in the state of American politics and the inner and outer workings of a presidential primary season in the era of Nixon and Vietnam. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a classic of American literature. The Great Shark Hunt is an anthology of many of his articles for Rolling Stone. One of the greatest eulogies I ever read was Thompson's remarks on the death of Richard Nixon. Thompson was a giant.
Read Fear and Loathing man, I highly recommend it, I decided to read it after seeing the movie and it was worth it, you can visualize each situation and realize in each chapter how faithful the film was. And of course, there are many more details than the movie itself (srry for bad english)
