This video sheds great light upon understanding both Hunter and the importance of the art of quality letter witting. I continue to enjoy the life of HST. God rest his soul.

i don't get why people are like 'oh his brain is so fried he mumbles non-stop it's impossible to understand him.' if you look up his interviews in the early 60s after hells angels came out it's the same way, that's just how he'd always talked

The writing definitely makes up for his speech. Some people thrive in expressing their selves through writing, and find it difficult to communicate any other way.

I am a better man because I've read Hunter S Thompson and Bukowski. They both wrote the truth to the best of their abilities.
@DralosVos
@DralosVos 8 лет назад
Buk and Hunter seem to go hand in hand. Distinct styles, but yet revel in there complete/incomplete control of their lives.
@walkertongdee
@walkertongdee 8 лет назад
+john carlson Bukowski wrote crap not in the same league. Sure in my younger days I admired him but I remember that piece when he was with a hooker and he wrote how she picked up a come stained rag from under the bed to wipe her self clean I realized he is just a wino with nothing...
@DralosVos
@DralosVos 8 лет назад
But that's what life is..crap. Bukowski was a hypocrite. But so am I, you and everyone else. Being a writer doesn't divinely elevate you above crap.
@walkertongdee
@walkertongdee 8 лет назад
I would feel sorry for because your life is crap but you made it that way, Losers like Bukowski made their lives crap. It's not too late you could eliminate the crap from your life and get happy:)
@johncarlson7338
@johncarlson7338 8 лет назад
+Walkertongdee Bukowski was an alcoholic , but a loser, I think not. He was free in a way few men are. He never sold his soul to write anything but what he saw as the truth. Not only that, but the man was a great poet and novelist. How many were both? Not many.

*Hunter was just as 'lost' as everyone else is...he was just more aware of it, more frightened and yet exalted at the same moment to realize 'just how fucked we all are"...and he liked writing it down* *The booze/dope were 'there' alright...but for the most part grossly exaggerated by himself and his fans...he valued the same things most people do...to think otherwise would be false* ( *He didn't like the idea of being 'old'...'old age' would deny him his ability on a physical level to 'do as I damn well want to whenever the mood strikes me!'...Hemingway was the same...terrified of being trapped inside a body that can longer be relied on, and knowing it's only going to become worse with every passing year...faster and faster...and the fear that your mind is not what it once was starts to gnaw at you...your friends from the 'old days' seem distant to you, like kids you remember from grade-school...and suddenly you feel "I'm alone now... there won't any 'new adventures' for you because your fuckin' body is betraying you, and suddenly you realize you can 'cheat the Reaper' and escape being feeble and senile* ) *I know EXACTLY how it feels to be old and know "I'm never going to be any better than I am right now...and 'right now' ain't so good*

If you look past the obvious eccentricities, you will find one of the most honest and humble human beings in the world of literature. At 4.44 Charlie Rose asks him....."Did you create a persona that you thought would serve you?" His answer: "that's giving me too much credit". Aside from Fear and Loathing and Hell's Angels, I really enjoyed Generation of Swine, and I thought it didn't receive the credit it deserved. After reading it I found myself inexplicably describing social situations as he might, and it came without any conscious effort on my part. To this day I still occasionally come up with a 'Hunteresque' comment, but only a sad few catch it. A brilliant, honest, humble, and genuine man. He went out on his own terms, like it or not, he wouldn't have had it any the way, it wouldn't have been congruent with who he was.

When it comes to reserving a pedestal for a sparsely populated class of incomparably authentic authors, Henry Miller should always be included as he was was the full-blown epitomy of authenticity. I recommend his Tropic of Cancer & Capricorn, preferrably read in chronological order. But seriously, if you have a passion for literature and adore Thompson as a character, discovering Henry Miller will be blissful.

@maxsiehier
@maxsiehier 8 лет назад
***** yes! i totally agree on that! i interpreted his comment as freedom like he can *do* what he wanted. because everyone can experience freedom of the mind, everyone can become awakened. but not everyone can have freedom of their *actions*. poor people have to work day in day out to be able to survive. when you're rich (money rich) you can go wherever and do whatever, because everything is ruled with money in this world. and sure, if you work a lot an buy crap you don't need but are still rich, then you're not fee. and yes, i admire him for taking his own route. even though he was broke as fuck, he stayed true to his desire: writing. and, yes, that's freedom!
@maxsiehier
@maxsiehier 8 лет назад
***** well, i also totally agree on that! look, if i was very rich. (won the lottery or something) i would never *work* again. but i would follow my passion. i would still learn a lot, maybe even do a study. i would be free to do whatever i wanted. but i wouldn't even buy expensive shit. i don't want that. my goal isn't money, it'll never be money. i do realize that money is pointless. it doesn't make you happy. and i even prefer a non-monetary system/economy. but it's the way it is. if more people would truly understand that money is an illusion and that if you desire money you are desiring something you'll never get, because money is number and numbers never end. that's the illusion most people lie in.

I don't think Charlie prepared very well for this. He read some of the letters in the book, flipped through some of the man's history, he even seems to know a little about him from not having been paid to do so. I like Charlie Rose, but I don't think he was the right person for this interview. Someone who understands Hunter should talk to him. This was a little too disconnected for my liking, like two men foreign from each other and without a translator. And Conan's interview was worse! Hunter tested him with the trial by firearms, just like he did Depp (and they remained friends to the end of his life), and Conan squandered it. You can see a moment in that interview where Conan beckons what he's all about out of him and tries to twist and skew it for some instant gratification comedy. I like Conan as well, but that was heartbreaking to watch because Hunter was trying to talk about something real. I just hate that the man wasn't much longer for our earth and the people who often got to sit down with him didn't know what they had in the least.

So this interview dates back anywhere from 98-00 or later but definitely not the pub. date because HST shot himself in 06 or 04. I never remember that date; I guess because I wish he were still here. His whole message was about life discovery & FREEDOM. When faced decision "Do whatever makes for the best story" He was a journalist & made his life in the story. Please don't overlook Hunter's message of Truth by getting hung up on his drug abuse. Yes, he did a lot of drugs, but he was also a Warrior of Truth. And that is so much more important.

that was the dumbest thread of nonsensical prattle... that stupid keyboard fight shouldn't be associated with a video of a man who single handedly altered the entire world of journalism. He created a journalist style that is still be used today. Whoever said that opinions are like assholes is totally correct. Talking ill about the dead is wrong, regardless of who the deceased may be - especially when you're criticizing an intelligent literary pioneer.
