“Gon…you are light. Sometimes you shine so bright, I must look away”. Makes me tear up every time. Killua is my fav character

Including the shot of Pitou holding Kite’s severed head immediately after Gon’s display of his hopefulness and optimism is such a gut punch and promises such an awful realization for the future. Another show might keep Kite’s fate up to a mystery until later on, but I think showing it immediately is just perfect. No matter how clear the show makes it, some people still have that hope that the plot won’t go there, just like Gon does. It’s a great narrative decision and it puts every viewer on the same page with the dramatic irony. Togashi stays goated

Morel and Knov are very likable characters and have interesting abilities. Glad to see them finally being here

ive been waiting for this episode! not only because of how good reactions to it usually are (that last scene always hits like a train) but because your commentary in specific is so interesting and valuable to me. hxh is one of my favorite stories of all time so i admit i can be picky and often underwhelmed by the commentary for it out there (the fact that it goes on such long hiatuses so frequently probably does not help. but hey, maybe things will change now that togashi is giving daily twitter updates!). so to see someone as thoughtful as you giving your perspective is really exciting and enjoyable for me, regardless of whether i agree with what you say or not. i sit through every discussion. keep up the awesome work.

Whew, four sets of thumbnails. It's really a top-tier episode, especially airing back in 2013 as part of a weekly series with no breaks. It's kind of unheard of nowadays with well-produced popular series getting two cours every two years.

ive been waiting for this episode for months! every video i update my girlfriend how close you are to seeing this episode. one of my all times, it makes me tear up every single re watch and it only gets better with time!

my fav tragic ending scenes that serves 3 things. Gon's naivety, Killua's toxic view of always being indebted to gon and want to be by his side as his purpose and royal guards are on a different level of power

This is one of the few things I don’t like about HxH. Why in the world would they show us Kite’s dead. Every single episode from this point on Gon keeps saying he’ll save Kite and everything’s ok. Why not keep the mystery? Why just tell us here, makes no sense

as you pointed out in regards to Morel's nose bridge, I love how the author doesn't try to design characters to be beautiful or marketable. yes, some characters have designs that are easy to sell, yes, some characters are beautiful looking, like Kurapika or Hisoka, but that's because that's how they are. a character like Morel isn't what you'd cool traditionally sexy or anything, but he doesn't have to be, because he doesn't like, EXIST to be eye candy for the audience of the traditional attractive man. next to him you've got this thin, sknny guy in a suit with combed over hair and glasses, and an old man with wrinkles and long earlobes. it's really important to me in character design to have this variety. it's like if you watch a live action show and very character is cast as some boring looking supermodel looking person, it always feels off. same can be said in animation.

I felt that “whoa” at the end

It's 1am. I'm about to sleep. Saw this in my feed. Got right back up. This episode is the ending of the Chimera Ant prologue imo and completely took me back when I first watched it.

Yeah @1:22:00 one of my few complaints about the 2011 version is cutting kite out from episode one.

Kite’s reaction to Pitou is the best; we have never seen such a display of fear and incredulity, especially from an elite Hunter and Nen master whose strength has been repeatedly emphasized. We must remember that Kite knows Ging, one of the top 5 Nen users, yet he still called Pitou’s raw power an impossibility. The moment Kite enters Pitou’s En, he immediately knows they are done for. A monster that can maintain a 2 km radius En represents such a tremendous leap in power.

on the question on how Kite managed to snuck Ging's license in, I think it could be explained away by the fact that it's a hunter license, so it's ok. They said that they can't refuese entry to hunters, and since hunters "defend their licenses with their life", I highly doubt they'd take away their licenses too.

The chimera ant nest looking like a hand as you said before, it reminds me of full metal alchemist brotherhood and the hand reaching for god

I agree that Kite feels as father figure to Gon. You kinda have that feeling in manga without it spoken out loud. So anime decided to add that “you taught me that in Ging’s place” line or something like that as quick solution to the problem 2011 anime made deciding not to include Kite in the first episode

It's kinda bug me all the time I re-watched, I hate saying that I loveEP1 of the 1999 version, about how Kite gave that license to Gon from the beginning. But in 2011, they've changed, and it's (personally) ruined Kite's death a lot. I supposed to be fast and shocked, but to gave that license to Gon like that is an easy red flag which I still don't understand until this day that while they decided to adapt this from the original.
