Love these videos. This one especially. My father too passed away almost 6 years ago and unfortunately none of my siblings hunt with me anymore. But I have a very supportive wife that loves to tag along with me. I can relate to the part of the video where you mentioned that your dad was up on that mountain with you. I've felt that same way more times than I can remember over the years since his passing while I've been up on the mountains hunting. Great video!

I concur with Randy, Colorado is the #1 state for Non-residential hunters, the state makes you feel that you are welcome. I get great information from the DNR and biology staff every time I go there. If we dont get drawn for the area's I put in for in my state of Montana, we hunt OTC 2nd season Colorado every year, however I have hunted Colorado for the past 11 years, just because I love to hunt there. My success in that state almost mimics the success I have here in Montana, and its very high for DIY hunts. I love hunting with my family It's our once a year bonding time, to get together and hunt like when we were kids, camp fires at night are the best.

Thank you for episodes like this. Non hunters seem to think its only about the kill. Its about so much more and this episode says more than I could. I Love that there are signs in colorado saying welcome hunters, never happen in Australia. Thanks Randy love your show.

Just clipped that Aspen near the dark spot left side. Too bad but it is still an intense memory that non-hunters and young men all over the cities in this country just need to experience and change their lives!

Hi Randy, I live in Oregon on the coast range. I had an encounter with a cow elk when a friend and I were deer hunting, we were so close, we could have poked his elk with our rifles. Steep coast range !

Another great video. His shot struck the tree. The up and down was perfect but it was just an inch or two too far forward. That's hunting though... the one that got away.

I find it ironic that my brother logs trees for his livelihood and ends up hitting a tree when his first bull elk opportunity comes along. Thanks for watching.

Exciting just wondering how you keep from getting list in new territory hand held GPS?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 6 лет назад
Pretty hard to get lost in the west, where you have so many visual landmarks. That said, I do have a GPS with a chip that tells me the surface ownership of the land. It would be embarrassing to get lost when I have the device in my hand.

I watched that shot several times over and over, your shot was a the right height for a kill shot and you did hit the Elk but the bullet hit the tree first, watch it in slow motion and after the bull turns to trot off. Look at his shoulder.
@jasonsanders4845
@jasonsanders4845 5 месяцев назад
Also look at the shot as it hits the tree, you can clearly see you hit it.
@russellkeeling9712
@russellkeeling9712 4 года назад
If you watch carefully you can see the bullet hit the tree on the right side of the opening.

Randy, what rifle do you shoot? Do you change equipment or ammo for different locations?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 лет назад
My most common cartridge is a .308 Win. with Nosler 165 grain Partition bullets. My "go to" rifle is a Howa Alpine Mountain Rifle. In this case it was a Howa Model 1500. Always topped with a Leupold VX-6 or VX-3 scope. Thanks for watching.

What Unit was this Randy?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 лет назад
We don't give unit numbers. It would change hunter application patterns and not be fair to those who hunt there. I hope you understand. It was not far from Grand Junction, CO.

he totally hit that bull! you can see the bullet hit the tree but as the bull turns away you can see the blood start oozing out behind the shoulder. blow it up on the big screen right at 18:14
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 лет назад
Hmm. We followed that bull for two miles in fresh snow and not a drop of blood to be found. No hair at the shot, no blood anywhere, just an elk that kept on truckin'. Thanks for watching.

The elk hunting stinks in Colorado, no need to come here. I hear Idaho is great though.
