Tag not filled and still I left this video completely satisfied! I quit watching hunting shows many years ago, cause as far as I'm concerned they are all under the very best conditions with a seemingly endless budget, and they sicken me, no... they repulse me! This is the only show I fell apon and now keep up with. This is reality and kill or no kill, on public land, how well you explain yourself to us, and your true appreciation for what you get to do so often... I'm all in! Thank you so much Randy for keeping this hunting privilege real for all of us. God bless you my friend.

Thanks for the kind comments and thanks for watching. I was disappointed that I didn't make good on my opportunity. Not because filling another tag is that important, but I feel I failed by not executing what I practice all year round. That said, it happens to all of us. That is why we show it on our episodes, the good, the bad, all of it. For those who want to be on some sort of a pedestal and pretend they never miss, I feel sorry if they find that facade to be a worthy story of how hunting unfolds. Again, thanks for watching. I hope to do better next time.

Man its a good thing you guys were filming that hunt. Can you imagine the feeling of thinking you hit him decent and wounded him?? aweful! Its great that you were able to review the footage. That hunt could have haunted you for life if you hadnt filmed it.. I wouldnt worry! Ryan Callahan missed a monster at 90 yards with his rifle.. It happens to the best of us. Thanks for all you do Randy, You inspired me to travel out west each year to take an elk. Only been twice and taken cows both times because of tag price.. but one day i will find a nice bull. and probably miss it from being so excited!! anyhow. Shoutout from Chattanooga, TN

Randy, It's great to see you put so much effort into trying to locate the deer you took a shot at, so many fall short in the dedication required when attempting to take an animal. It is also nice to see it doesn't only happen to me! Happy hunting and good luck to you next season!

Since the first couple days end up being scouting days anyway, I try to get out to my hunting spot on Thursday morning (before Saturday opener) so I can get a day and a half of scouting in before the season starts. It also helps me get the camping spot I want before everyone else in the world shows up Friday afternoon.

could very well be a miss and i am just watching it on a little screen. just looked like the second shot made the buck hunch up and stay that way, one thing for a deer hunch from the shot, but to walk that way after looked like a potential hit. I'm sure Randy would put in the effort either way. great video

Randy, my son will hopefully be bowhunting mule deer in Colorado this year and wanted to know if you had any tips on what to look for when scouting and if you would ever bowhunt burns?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 6 лет назад
Mostly look for tracks and beds if you are archery hunt. Mule deer are pretty localized in early season, so if you find their sign, odds are they are close by. I would bowhunt a burn, for sure.

Don’t know what speed pill you pushing. If it’s like a SST they have the same inheritance as the Remington Bronze Point they just don’t open up reliably either they work or just open up 2/3’s the way through sometimes act closely like a FMJ🥴 Sierras I’ve shot deer and caribou, one hole going in two going out the core separated from the jacket. A good soft point never fail like Speer hot core I prefer Hornady SP’s. Ya’ they don’t have the 500ish ballistic coefficient but they do work well out to 700 yards. If I knew what cartridge I’d know what to tell you Sir Randy. Keep the barrel hot And the X-Ring full of holes targets....... UP🤙

@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 6 лет назад
If he was, and he may have been, we never found him, never found any blood or hair. I kept searching until season was over, though other bucks could have been taken. I hope it came across that I look at my tag as good for one animal and having concern I had hit that deer, I was not willing to go hunt others, rather continued looking for this one. I feel terrible if that was the outcome, but I'll never know.
@dustinswartz9870
@dustinswartz9870 6 лет назад
Randy I'm not doubting you didn't do everything in your power to recover that buck that I am sure of what I was trying to say was I am sure the first was a miss or a hair cut but the second shot punched him and the way he acted it was a gut shot and I as well as every true Hunter has done it before, if they say they haven't they either haven't hunted enough or there liars and sorry if I offended you, he may not have been hit, I prey he wasn't honestly but it looked like a hit sounded like a hit and he looked sick and as you know gut shot bucks can be impossible to track and it's almost impossible to track something you have nothing to follow, by the way sorry about your slump my friend, Colorado has always been a dream/fantasy of mine!!!! Someday I will life priorities keep getting in the way but watching your shows keep the dreams alive so thank you for being real life and a good down to earth outdoorsman!!!

I think you hit him with the second shot. It looks like a gut shot. That buck died. But there is no definitive proof either way, and more evidence you missed clean. This is also why I keep preaching heavy bullets. 140 gr bullets at that distance may not exit if they plow threw a few bones first, like rib bones. Big Mule deer are tough, just like big whitetail. I believe that at distances beyond 300 yards the bare minimum for bullet weight has to be 150gr. with +160 and heaver better. What this does is ensures, that no matter the angle or bone you hit your still going to get an exit wound. For elk my experience is 180gr. with 200 better. We have all killed deer with light bullets and well placed shots, but when you get an opportunity to shoot a 30" deer sometimes he doesn't pose for the script, and your forced to take that NOT perfect angle. Your second shot hes facing you slightly quartering to your left. You can see the dust fly off his lower abdomen, (gut shot). It looks like your back in the lower stomach to me. All your going to get out of that wound is a yellow fluid, and if his belly is empty clear fluid. He will live for 2 to 6 days before the bacteria in his gut makes him so weak the coyotes get him, because he cant move. A heaver bullet might have broken his back leg on exit. I would have given him 24 hours and then started looking for him on the first ridge were you spotted him racking brush, he has a safe area and were you saw him the first time I think was close to that safe bedding area, just by the way he was acting. Being wounded he would go to the very place he feels safest, if he can. It will be a cold dark spot no one goes, if he can. That 7mm-08 is a hammer on deer. My 2 cents I could be 100% wrong with this buck, I wasn't there. You might have missed him twice. Remember : down hill ~ rounds are high ! up hill ~ rounds are low ! What a great hunt thanks for sharing the video !!

That was a nosler e-tip. If it hit that buck, it exited and then some. However, that mono bullet may not have expanded and acted like an fmj, because mono bullets need velocity, or heavy resistance to expand.
@danelobe2524
@danelobe2524 4 года назад
@@nateeller2683 that is a possibility bullet under performance. why shoot them then ? Nosler ballistic tips better ? Dad always said if your going to gut shoot deer you better hit them with a 300gr bullet. Ha ha ha ha... I shoot Barnes TSX 168gr out of my .300wsm. I shot a rutting 5x5 in area 25 Colorado in 06. Big 30" guy jumped him out of a thicket under a rim, and he ran 600 yards before he stopped and looked back. Quartering away shot slightly up hill. I pulled the trigger before he got his head back up front and hit him low in the back ribs and took out His liver exiting under his arm pit on the other side. I thought I missed the way he launched off, but the report sound was a thump, I knew I hit him. By the time I walked the 600 yards up the game trail (9600' elevation) I saw his rack just over the bench, he ran 50' and laid down and died. Half his liver was missing. Lungs and heart were intact. My experience with that shot is you don't find that deer, he runs far away. I was 6" low and 4" to far right, the solid velocity and bullet weight saved my hunt and a deer from suffering. Moral of the story, speed, weight, and good expanding bullets save your mistakes and help make you successful.
@nateeller2683
@nateeller2683 4 года назад
@@danelobe2524 a 7mm-08 just doesn't have the ability at least in factory loading to launch monometal bullets very fast. I'm guessing Randy forgot about the limitations that come with the e-tip

". doin ' what lions do " Right , like here in the Black Hills where the lions have decimated the white tail and especially devastating to the mule deer herd ...Not only are the lions destroying the deer herd but the diminishing deer herd translates to diminishing hunting oportunities. less draws means less hunters , dwindling hunting camps and a dying tradition...Randy , those cute kitty cats are killing our hunting tradition !!!!!

Randy, does the idea of running across mountain lions cross your mind at all? if not, why not? (new hunter question)
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 лет назад
No, it doesn't. A lion is looking for the lowest risk opportunity possible. They know a human is a high risk situation and they avoid us at all costs. I find a lot of lion kills. I find there tracks almost every day when there is snow. There are a lot of them where I hike, but I really have no worries about them.
