Barrie Duckworth has been involved in the wildlife of Africa for over 50 years. As a Parks & Wildlife Ranger, professional hunter, safari operator, concession holder & consevationist he is well placed to comment on the current state of the wilderness areas and wildlife of Zimbabwe & Mozambique. This interview was a real eye-opener for me and helped me to see what a valuable job Barrie and his ilk are doing to restore and preserve the wildlife resources of these beautiful areas. Large wilderness areas are subject to the ravages of illegal poaching, often supported by corrupt law enforcement authorities, illegal logging supported by the Chinese etc. Barrie and his family are having to contend with and clean up these practices, at great risk to themsleves. I salute these heroes of conservation and organizations like the Dallas Safari Club who assist them.

This is without doubt the best podcast on the internet. The old saying about there's none so blind as those who will not see and none so deaf as will not hear is particularly pertinent when referring to the "do-gooders" Kudos Sir. The world needs more of you. Well done to John and Hannes too.

Great Chat, Thanks Guys. Just shows without hunting and conservation there will be nothing left. Please get the next generation in there to continue the good work. My Mate The Late Paul Ferreira Askari Safaris was also heading up a massive conservancy in North Moz but unfortunately he passed away in June at the camp. Anton carrying on with all the other great teams. Barrie, I'm sure you knew Paul, also had concessions in Zim and Zambia. A humble legend of a man at at his game. Mozambique was the only camp I never got to visit with Paul.

Ive hunted out of Coutada 10 about 3 times over the last 10 years and met Paul on my last visit. What a sad loss to the industry of one of the pioneers of true fair chase hunting in Africa. I would strongly recommend a visit for a very unique hunting exeprience....otherwise, a great chat about a very important issue for sustainable wildlife use..!

Thanks for a wondeful interview! This is really eye opening for me. Well done and I hope that many more people will understand the necessity to manage animal populations.

Years ago I took a hunter educator's course in Saskatchewan so I could teach the firearms safety licence requirements. In the federal government's wisdom, they strong armed the provinces which have jurisdiction for hunting, to add standardized firearms content to the hunter safety courses. A good portion of the course was still fair chase hunting, game identification, wildlife conservation and good field behaviours. I can still see the graphic of a bucket with many holes to demonstrate wildlife habitat carrying capacity. Animals breed every year, then each season has predation, injury, hunting harvests, life expectancy, water, winter cover, disease, etc.

Thanks, nice to see you both. Keep up the good work Very difficult to explain poaching, gin traps and snares to people who have never seen it up close.

Very interesting, saddening and heartening. If only the self-righteous 'do gooders' would listen to people who know what they are talking about... The thing is, they genuinely do want to 'do good', the problem is they have preconceived ideas about how it can be done, it's a dogma with them. Forgive the pun, but the 'elephant in the room' is China; in terms of forest, animal and mineral resource over-exploitation - everyone knows this, most are afraid to state it. It will be a sad day in a century or so when people ask what the bush was, and the answer comes back 'It's what China used...' 😢

There's a lot of truth in what you say. China is behind the illegal logging in Mozambique...

I respect the invaluable connection between hunting, survival & conservation. What i don't respect is egotistical narcissistic dysfunctionals disrespecting their kull as boastful trophies - they've a large part to play in the bad reputation, which the decent contributors need to remedy. It's a bit like posh rich brats screaming around in their latest sports car - pathetic.

Good Evening Gents.. Thank you for your wonderful interview.. As Always.. A Bit Cheeky of me I know..?? But Barrie, Sir, would you perhaps have a position open for the likes of Me, particularly in the anti poaching sector....?? I am prepared to work for little to nothing. Just for the love of nature and conservation..!! And being in the Shuttine doing something constructive and productive..?? Kind regards Charlie..
