Amazing tree, thanks for showing that Quercus chrysolepis tree , it has some similarities in form to Quercus virginiana (aka Southern Live Oak) in that it doesn't seem extremely tall, has long low branches that touch the ground. I have to see if they are related among the oaks. Check out some google images on Angel Island Southern Live Oak and Jacksonville Florida Treaty oak which is another southern live oak.
Evergreen oaks are my favorite woody trees. Being from the S.E., I have special place in my heart for Q. virginiana. If you aren’t using natives exclusively, I would think Q. suber would be fairly drought tolerant, and I would be tempted to try the lovely and nearly native Q. polymorpha and Q. rysophila because they are just that cool
If you love oaks, you'll need to make it to my buddy Sean's nursery up in Portland someday called Cistus. He has collected oaks from all over the world especially from the western drier states and Mexico and is doing some pretty revolutionary stuff with that genus.
