Hunting for Comics at Flea Markets and Antique Shops? Always Check THESE Places!

Since nobody else has done it yet, I looked up your haul on Comic Book Resources to give you a ballpark figure on value. Obviously, there are collectors out there who may pay more. Unusual Tales # 39 is a $70 book at NM, and for the $1 you paid for it you’d double your money if it’s a 1.0. If I had to guestimate condition, I’d say it’s between a 4.0 - 4.5, which puts it in the $10 - $12 range. Wild, Wild West #4 was part of a 4-part miniseries from 1990, so it came out well before the movie. A NM is worth $3. DC Comic Presents # 59 (Legion of Substitute Heroes) is only a $4 book at NM, but it is significant for being the 2nd appearance of Ambush Bug. Since you asked, the Substitute Heroes consisted at the time of Polar Boy (drops temperature), Fire Lad (literally breathes fire), Stone Boy (turns into an immobile stone statue), Chlorophyll Kid (makes plants grow faster), and Color Kid (can change an object’s color). It’s worth noting that this issue sold so well that Keith Giffen was tasked with following it up with a Legion of Substitute Heroes Special, which many comic historians point to as the book that popularized his metafictional comedy style that he’d later bring to Justice League. Our Love Story # 37 is a $50 book at NM. I’d guestimate it between a 5.5 - 6.0 based on the deep the spine stress, which puts it in the $10 - $15 range. Archie’s Vacation Special # 1, Betty # 9 - 11 and 23, and Veronica # 10 are all $5 each NM. FYI, keep an eye out for # 8 (the scuba diving cover) as that’s the highest valued book of the 195-issue run at $80 for NM. Betty and Veronica # 54 - 55, and World of Archie # 3 - 4 are $3 each at NM. G.I. Combat # 35 is a $350 book at NM. To break even on the $15 you spent, it would need to be at least a 1.4. Felix the Cat: 3-D Comic Book # 1 is a $450 book at NM, so even a 0.5 copy would double your money. I’d guestimate it between a 1.0 - 2.0, which ballparks it in the $15 - $30 range. I’d say that Unusual Tales and Our Love Story were your big winners based solely on what you spent compared to its actual value, the Archie books have the best chance of resale above their FMV, and the Felix book is just plain cool for only $5 (I would’ve grabbed it myself if I saw it). Personally, I would’ve passed on the G.I. Combat solely on its condition, but if it’s going your PC then more power to ya! Still, this was a fun video and an accurate window into Antique Store comic book shopping.

The Legion of Substitute Heroes was the backup for the Legion of Super Heroes. They were originally rejects from the main team who decided to form a backup club. This book is a great funny story. Take the 10 minutes and read it. Ambush Bug is hilarious. This story takes place in the 30th Century. This book puts the comic back in comic book.

I'll take a Golden Age book at $5 all day long. Nice pick up!

I won't lie, I'm the kind of guy who would pay a buck each for the Archie books. I've read comics of every kind since I could pick up a comic. I really like GI Combat, and was intrigued when I saw Doom Patrol on the cover. Very cool. But that Felix the Cat book, that's an incredible find. All around awesome haul, Mike!

Nice comic finds. Love the Felix in 3D! The source I use had that comic listed at 46 in VG condition. Also, That whale looked very interesting at stop number two.

Felix the Cat was the best out of the bunch. The Archies were cool. I particularly like the early Archie books. The artist were very good especially Bob Montana, Al Fagaly, Dan DeCarlo and Stan Goldberg.

Mike I really enjoyed the comics especially the older ones it's great that you pick up the older ones it gives a sense of preserving history because once those things are lost or thrown away it's like saying that it never happened you preserve them for yourself and for the future of other s and the artwork is amazing it's just like having a van Gogh painting or Thomas Rowlands. I’m glad you grabbed that Our Love Story. Yes it’s Romita drawing a go-go chick that could be Gwen Stacy. The Charlton horror comics are always cool, sometimes you can find Ditko art but not sure on that one. But ALWAYS buy any Archies that have sexy covers drawn by Dan DeCarlo. He was THE Archie GGA artist for decades

On a different note, I remember you mentioned in a prior video (or maybe it was a podcast), that you play guitar (?) Do you play with friends in a band? What kind of music do you play? Who do you enjoy listening to? What's your favorite guitar you own and what guitar would you love to own some day? I bet you'd have an audience if you decided to make a 'spin off' video about your musical/playing interests ... well, at least you'd have one view and 'like' 😆 Great video, ... My wife is visiting the Cape Cod area this weekend and I'm so jealous that I'm not up there with her to hunt for comics in all of these locations you have around you. Around here it is pretty hit or miss with the antique malls and shops, with most having stock that doesn't rotate much. 😢

Mike, co-incidentally I was in Orange, New South Wales recently but no cheap comic books for me unfortunately. Marvel's "Our Love Story" in the first shop is a title you just never see in the wild. That issue of DC Comics Presents is good fun, nice choice. The Felix 3D comic is the pick of these. We Australians claim Felix as our own as he originated in the animation studio of Australian Pat Sullivan in the 1920s, so he should really speak with an Aussie accent. Did the comic still have the glasses?

LOVE Archie books but mostly from the Golden Age as i am collecting towards a complete run along with PEP Comics. I do collect some from the later. Check out these very innuendo covers: Archie #271 and Betty and Me #16. I will be posting those books to my channel tonight. Those are expensive.

Legion of Substitute Heroes is a fun read because it includes Ambush Bug. If you like silly I'm sure you'll like that book. I would definitely of picked up that Felix book, nice find (nit pick, glasses are red/green, )

@ 41 seconds into the video, you were flipping through the comics, and I saw a red cover Peter Parker Spiderman, it's a red cover. That may be worth some big money, It's an Iconic cover, it may even have the Kingpin in it. Just thought you should know.
