Hunting for sea shells in Florida. We walked 8 miles and I finally find a shell I've been hunting!

Hunting for sea shells is one of my favorite past times. On the weekends you'll usually find me walking the beaches of Southwest Florida looking for critters and sea shells on the beach.
What happens when you walk more? Depending on the day, you increase your chances of finding more. On this day we walked the entire length of Fort Myers Beach. I'll take you from Bowditch Point Park all the way to the Big Carlos Pass bridge. The weather was great and we found a few critters along with a bunch of keeper shells, including a shell I've been dying to find for myself!

My BFF from Wayne, NE sent me some video of snow this morning - UGH! Yes, FMB is different than Sanibel, but I seem to find exactly the same shells except at FMB I'll find critters too. I rarely find critters at Sanibel, but when I do see them (Loggerhead turtle), they are pretty amazing! Stay warm and thanks so much for watching!

Maybe it was just the north part of the beach you were referring to, but I always think it’s amusing how shells we dream of finding, are often ones people who live other places can’t even walk 10 feet of beach without stepping on one. Where I live banded tulips and lightning whelks are like a pretty rare find. But baby’s ears you can find by the dozens in a short period of hunting. I love your videos. Cheers from Pawleys Island!

I haven't really visited Captiva except for Turner Beach which we only did good at once after a storm. It seems between FMB and Sanibel we manage to find something worth making a video about. Fort Myers Beach is definitely under rated for shelling. I find just as much good stuff there as Sanibel! Thanks so much for watching!

Great finds! Shelling will definitely pick up with the negative tides. Higher high tides will push more shells and negative low tides will reveal more stuff. I already looked that in around mid December we'll have some really really good low tides in SWF! I'm sure those will be great shelling days!

Hi Pat! Your comment sent me on the hunt to figure out what that shell was. I posted a comment in the COMMUNITY tab that it sure looked like a junonia, but it was a broken Atlantic Giant Cockle piece. Really good catch! It would be fun to purposely not pick up a shell and see if other people can spot it! Thanks as always for watching!!!

I have yet to find a baby ear, so nice catch! I like the lightning welks to be on the smaller side. I have a great big one I found while snorkeling at Cayo Costa, and it looks like a yucky sea monster. The horse conchs still look pretty as they get bigger.

I just recently found your channel and I'm loving watching your videos. I'm in Pinellas county and my husband and I have just started going back to the beach now that our kids are grown and married. We used to go when they were younger, and loved hunting for shells locally, and also hunting for sharks teeth on Venice Beach. I've been finding some of the same shells that you're finding (not the quantity or quality, but similar varieties) and I'm curious about the olive shell. I've found a bunch, but they're always very dull, except for one in particular that was as bright and shiny as if someone had polished it. I found that very odd, but so happy with that find.
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 года назад
Maybe this is why i love those olives and maybe I haven't done as good a job as I could explaining that those olives can be found quite pointy and very, very shiny! The creature typically covers it's shell when its burrowing so it "self polishes" it's own shell! The older dull ones were probably rolling around in the surf and sand for a while but the really glossy ones are probably quite newly deceased critters. Lately I've been finding more of the really glossy ones - I'll try to remember to point this out in an upcoming video. Thank you so much for watching!

So here's the bummer...I prefer to walk barefoot but after about 4-5 miles the bottom of my feet really start to bother me, so I brought my flip flops. Once my feet started to hurt on this walk, I wore my shoes and it made the rest of the walk bearable. I've bought sport water shoes but the sand still gets in. Water socks stink but I've heard "barefoot shoes" work so before our next big walk, I'm going to invest in a pair!
