Great channel with good honest reviews. I'm surprised it took me so long to find you. I've been going through your videos, and as a woodsman/survivalist/etc.. myself, appreciate the real deal. Few here on the tubes actually use their tools a lot or have built the skills over time. I've been using an ESEE PR-4 as one of my main belt knives for a little while now and have fallen in love with it. I'm curious, have you used one❓ If not I highly recommend you check it out. Blessings 🙏🏻
I have never got a spark from flint on the OH. Perhaps its just operator error. One thing to consider is the OH full tang parring knife. It can be used as small Sloyd knife and because the tip is not real point sharp, it is good to open up belly cut on deer with reduced risk of cutting something not intended and provides full fist grip when doing so. Great for removing rib meat or spoon carving. I am glad to see there is still interest in these knives with new knife brands coming out every day, this one lives on with legacy.
Dexter-Russell is still making Green River butcher, slicing and skinning knives with wood handles and carbon steel blades. The buckskinners especially love them. But they're useful tools wherever you need a knife.
I love your opinion on knives ...I'm so tired of the honeymoon reviewers. You have to really use a knife to learn it's pro's and con"s and you can tell instantly if someone has done that. I was like that myself when I first got into knives about 6 years ago. My main fanboy knife was the mora Garberg which I now can't stand. The relief edge on the belly is horrible yet people are obsessed with that blade. I was so blinded by my obsession of "scandi" grinds that I refused to use other knives. I still struggle with jumping the gun and loving a knife before putting it through its paces. Honestly I think the Mora Bushcraft Black is a much better tool than the Garberg . Since they wanted to add a full tang knife to their brand I think it would of been a better candidate to do so...Not really needed as a full tang but , still a better design to use imho. That said I now prefer a full flat or high saber grind over most others. I do love using a good scandi matter of fact my knife of choice at the moment is the Tops Brakimo. It's a very high scandiVex and cuts really good. The handle is thin but after a year of using it I actually don't mind it, it's very controllable. Anyways blah blah blah .... I'll stop writing a book now.
Actually, Ontario advised me that their Old Hickory knives are 1075 now. Supposedly this was done to reduce warranty work on their larger knives, but I suspect it was done to reduce production costs. Ontario has been very slow to inform its distributors, and has only recently updated it's website. If you have a knife made after 2016, chances are it's 1075. The Bushcraft line and the Blackbird were changed over to 420HC.
