Hi Matt ! Here's the NDB database I've been taking care of for more than 10 years now : www.classaxe.com/dx/ndb/reu/ . It also lists worldwide HAM beacons, DGPS, NAVTEX, time signals stations. By default, it is set to search for NDB. Enter the ID and the frequency of the carrier and the location will show below. 433-HEN is located at Henton, 277-CHT is Chiltern, 335-WCO is Westcott, 367.5-OX is Oxford / Kidlington - 386-BZ is Brize Norton, etc. . FYI, as a NDB DX'er, I already logged 2037 NDBs from 93 countries. Pat

Wow! Thanks Pat!! This is exactly the kind of resource I was looking for. This is my first experience with this, and tbh, my antenna is not designed to go that low, so I was kinda lucky I managed to pick something up. That’s an amazing resource you’ve put together, thank you for sharing this with us! And congrats on 93 countries! Looks like all mine were UK lol :)

@@TechMindsOfficial Thanks for the kind comment ! I'm glad I could help you. Feel free to ask if you need further details on how to use the database. Of course, you can carry out multi-criteria searches, i.e list all french NDBs reported this year, look for all beacons transmiting between 350 and 400 kHz from Italy, search for NDBs within 500 km from your location, and so on. The results can also be viewed on a map. By default, the list will show 50 entries ; if your search is supposed to give more results, simply select 'all results' in the upper left corner of the main window ('Customise REU report' > show). It's up to you now Matt !

@aunumero73 4 года назад
@@neilfroggycrompton2466 Hi Neil ! No, you just have to select the 'Worldwide' option, (top of the page) to search for NDBs from the Pacific area (or "'North America" for reports from this part of the world).

The BUR is also a low powered aeronautical beacon BUR 421 from Burnham 513108N , 0004038W. Google is a marvelous radio tool.

Learn IMC by sounding it out-not as 'dot and dash' but as it sounds: dits and dahs! This is a. Better way to learn Morse Code - using dot and dash will cause you to base slow and you will just have to re learn it again! Plus you are automatically limiting your receive speed!
@zvpunry1971
@zvpunry1971 4 года назад
Also, try to recognize the sound of complete characters and the common abbreviations. Use tools like morse machine from lcwo.net/ where the individual characters are given at a normal speed but with a bigger pause between the characters. With slow morse characters it isn't really possible to hear and learn the sound of them, just individual dits and dahs.

Some of the signals in the 400khz band are non-directional aeronautical beacons, a list to identify these beacons in UK airspace can be found on the internet.

Your HEN CW ID is a MHW (nondirectional beacon with less than 50 watts) aeronautical beacon on 433 .5 kHz from Henton in the UK (51°45N.58' 0°47.42'W)

As for the first beacon sation you tuned, we still have some operating here in Brasil. I say still, because unfortunately they're being shut down one after another. Most of them are situated along the coast and broadcast a three letter call sign on morse code and use the LF band. Thanks for the CW Get software tip.

You’re welcome! I actually ended up looking at the waterfall for those that CW Get couldn’t decode. It’s clear what a dot or a dash is in the waterfall. 👍

A beacon (time signal) that is easy to receive in most of Europe, quite useful as a frequency reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RWM

and also i would say the same, the most wat you hear on beacons, is from the Air Traffic Security world Wide. Also HEN is a VOR (Henton) Used for the Flight Navigation in the commercial planes. VOR will be send the signal 360 degress (only identifier you can clarified.) The Nav Signal of the becon will be send 360 degress around. The NAV System knows the time window, and then he can tell you in the cockpit how many nm away from henton your plane flying. Also very important: The Track "0" is alltime Nothpole directed.

Henton (HEN) is a Non-Directional Beacon (NDB), not a VOR. VORs operate in the VHF range between 108 and 117.95 MHz. VOR stands for Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range.

@@robbrowning1137 I only explaining it as a sample. I know the the different against NDB and VOR. I only will tell the people what technical using is behind a beacon. Also the HAM Operator´s have beacons with (german said: Baken). He used it only to show the Range of Operation. In all Radio Bands og HAM Operation you can find beacons all over the world. Only the technical using is different. +

If these beacons are constantly just sending their cw call sign,what are they actually used/useful for?, are they for navigating location ?,& how would these beacons be powered?. battery/with solar panel trickle charging?
@Receiver-zx5wy
@Receiver-zx5wy 4 года назад
They are there to help aircraft navigation. There are instruments in aircraft cockpits which can use the signal I believe. I imagine they are powered from mains supply. They are provided by National Air Traffic Services in the UK and other govt. bodies worldwide.
@hoofie2002
@hoofie2002 4 года назад
A radio receiver in the aircraft can be tuned to that frequency. The Morse identification tells you which one it is. The antenna in the aircraft is capable of telling you which direction the signal is coming from.

Nice video, but strictly speaking, these are not HF beacons, they are mostly MF, with some, below 300 kHz, at LF. Believe it or not, there is a group on Facebook which shares DXing these NDB beacons. My best was SAL, on 274 kHz, in the Cape Verde Islands, a long way for an LF signal to travel. There are many beacons of various types in the HF band. I find the Russian letter beacons intriguing (See Wikipedia) as well as 'The Buzzer' at 4625 kHz, 'The Airhorn' at 4020 kHz and 'The Goose' at 3102 at night and 4310 during the day. I started the SDR hobby about 3 years ago and every day, I learn something new. I'm currently logging Nato Stanag 4285 broadcasts, received in the UK, near London.

I love NDB’s. I can’t believe with your end fed you are picking up that much. I almost never hear anything. Wow I can’t believe after watching your channel for this long I haven’t come across this. Sadly in the US most NDB’s are being shut down and it’s very hard to hear anything.

Please NOT "dash" and "dot". The usual way of saying the morse characters is "dah" and "di" (but using "dit" if the dot is at the end of a character). e.g. C is "dah-di-dah-dit", V is di-di-di-dah etc. This sounds much more like the real characters to guys who "speak" morse!
@brian.7966

well, that's fine but not everyone knows that maybe that is why he probably did that.
@zvpunry1971

Brian: A good teacher should try to correct widespread mistakes like this. But that is only possible if he knows that it is a mistake. I assume he just didn't know. Fortunately there are some comments to point it out. Using "dash" and "dot" or extremely slow morse is really bad, it prevents learners from hearing the sound of characters or abbreviations. A fast spoken "dah-di-dah-dit dah-dah-di-dah" immediately interpreted as CQ, an abbreviation used to call all stations (it's actually a homonym for "seek you").
