"Thank you Mr. Bison, thank you thank you." Made me tear up a little. I'm not one for hunting, but the way you respected that bison made me happy. I know a lot of hunters and work at a sporting goods hunting shop. The many people who claim to respect animals do the exact opposite. Thank you for respecting the animal. Bisons truly are magnificent creatures.

The government had policies to purposely slaughter the buffalo and starve native prairie tribes into starvation and force them into accepting treaty deals for their land. It wasnt just over hunting, but a deliberate and purposeful slaughter, promoted by government as a method of clearing the land for settlers/farmers/ranchers, as well as force hostile native tribes to submit.

Over the past year or so, I have been researching and watching videos on Hunting. To be honest, I had such an incorrect idea of what hunting really is (if there really can be such a thing) this video among some others really taught me that its more than just bagging an animal. It more than just the kill, its everything leading up to it, its about the hunt, its about the animal, its about observation and appreciation. There is anxiety and stress, the lucky and the unlucky.. great comradery and great food. Thanks for the lesson and I cant wait to start hunting.

I, too, am a hunter; a life long hunter. I don't precisely remember my very first hunt, but it would have started with English Sparrows with my Red Ryder BB Gun, around age 8 or 9. My skills and experience progressed rapidly from there. I lived the rest of the year for the various hunting seasons. Mostly mule deer, elk and a Dall Sheep and Caribou, both in Alaska. With plenty of coyotes and small game to fill in between. I was lucky enough to have been born into a large cattle ranching family, and there are 6 generations making our living on the same place. I love your ethical comments on hunting, conservation, and the deep need humans have to hunt. You are 100 % correct in stating that ethical hunters are the ONLY reason we have the big animals that we all enjoy in this country. By hunters and non-hunters alike. Ethical ranchers and farmers are equally to thank for our wonderful and abundant wildlife. Of course, there are slobs who abuse the heavy responsibility of caring for our wildlife, just as there are slob hunters. I abhor them both. I have to say I am very disappointed at your characterization of the Buffalo (Bison for the politically correct) being squeezed into smaller and smaller tiny portions of our land. That is simply not true. There more opportunities to hunt buffalo all the time. The opportunities are definitely not increasing very rapidly, and like all big game hunting these days, there are the canned, high fence type of "hunting" and the open range type. Not a perfect solution, but there are those who prefer that type. I am happy that you are able to pursue hunting as your main occupation, and have the opportunity and wherewithal to afford the types of hunting you enjoy. But PLEASE, understand that ranchers, farmers, and agriculture in general are some of the very best stewards of hunting. You indicate you feel threatened by the ranch owners and farmers squeezing the Buffalo into smaller and smaller areas. Have you not considered the tremendous amount of agricultural land once open to hunting, that is being purchased by large corporations and wealthy individuals who buy up the prime habitat and then completely close it off to all hunting? The hundreds of thousands of prime habitat being clear cut and turned into ski areas for entertainment only? I sincerely hope you don't take this as an attack on your person. I enjoyed the video and heartily agree with all but a very few of your comments. You reach a tremendous audience and your words carry a lot of weight. Sincerely, Mike M. Brennan

It's crazy how the herd remained so close that someone had to keep warding them off. Great job, Randy, on showing so much respect on such a touchy and political subject.
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 8 лет назад
It is a crazy behavior, but one that I am told has evolved over eons. Another behavior that is seemingly strange, but makes sense when I think about it, is the instinct of bison to stop and form a tight group when they sense danger. For eternity, that defense mechanism served them well, be the biggest, baddest, toughest dudes on the prairie. That defense mechanism was part of their demise when the market shooters showed up in the 1800's.

I live in northern Colorado and since you filmed this we have had an introduction of bison in my county right on the Wyoming border (12 bison Were brought down from Yellowstone) that has grown faster than expected and is already in the triple digits and close to if not over carrying capacity for the public land, hopefully they will get spread to even more of the state and eventually we will have tags for them

Randy, you seem to also embody Fred Bear's view on hunting. Good on ya', bro. “I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target, but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and the sure knowledge that nature’s ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow.” -- Fred Bear

@Fresh_Tracks 7 лет назад
Thanks for the kind comment. Fred Bear left some big footprints on the hunting landscape. When we seek our own food and the responsibility that comes with that, a huge dose of humility and appreciation for the animals follows. As a hunter, you know full well that feeling. Thanks for watching.

Very nice, bison is so mouthwateringly delicious. I certainly agree that nowhere near enough restoration effort has been put into the American bison. If the FWS and the eco-nuts put as much effort and money into bison as they did with wolves, we'd have brucellosis free herds of bison roaming wide expanses again. Hunting opportunities would be far more plentiful for Americans to be able to enjoy this delicious and pure wild meat on their tables.

No, the flavor is very close to beef but has its own very mild distinction. It is leaner than beef and thus healthier too, particularly when you consider that it is hormone and antibiotic free... 100% natural.

@indiapale The enviro-nut politicians (who don't want hunting or ranching at all) want to blame the ranchers and hunters for the confinement of the bison, rather than finding a solution (for their political grand-standing); and on the other side, the money-grubbing politicians don't want to set up a program for ranchers to get assistance (that would come from trophy fees) to deal with BTB and Brucellosis that can be spread by the bison to domestic herds, because they want the taxpayer's dollar and license fees to go to their pet projects (which improves their chances of getting bribes... I mean, excessive campaign contributions). The problem, like with most things in this land today, is that the majority of the people in a position to do the right thing... don't want to, because they benefit from the way things are... same way it was when the bison were wiped out and the native nations were driven from their lands, despite having treaties with the US

Coming from a long line of hunters this is what I was raised on! The part of an ethical hunt and taking an animal for food. Great job showing that Randy! The only thing that is sad is seeing the range of Bison before and after. I had no idea that they covered so much of North America including my home state of WI. I see both sides of the debate but I still stand on the side of the conservationists which I'm proud to call myself! Keep up the great work Randy!

"Mike Smith" Hunting is about CONSERVATION or "the wise use of resources." Having established hunting seasons, a limited number of tags and strict enforcement is what has brought bison and other species back from the brink. These tags are given by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks department to ensure that bison continue to flourish. Wildlife biologists determine the need to harvest a certain number (10 per year as stated in the video) of bison to allow the population to grow. And no, they did not leave that bison. Randy Newberg uses every bit of each animal he harvests. Watch more episodes of his show and you will learn a lot.

I've chased enough whitetails in my home state of Minnesota, and decided the time was right to take advantage of the surplus tags. I really enjoy Randy Newborn's show. It's easily the best of its kind. The fact that he almost always hunts on public like (like most of the rest of us) makes his show far more interesting and enjoyable than most of the others, where the star essentially acts as a promoter for expensive outfitters. All that said, this was not Randy's finest moment. It just looks bad, regardless of whether the species is ultimately harmed or helped. It also doesn't seem much more challenging than killing a dairy cow. I'll allow that there's probably more to it than that, but yeah... this one did hunters no favors.

It's great hear you guys share your appreciation and respect for these creatures, and your willingness for restraint that you displayed here. I think a lot of animal advocates miss this point - that hunters care about these animals just as much (I've never hunted before but this seems to be the case from what I've heard from many hunters)
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 5 лет назад
That is a hard point for some to see, as many do not want to see that point. I am glad you found it obvious and helpful to the message. These are amazing animals, deserving far better than that treatment our society gives them. The food they provide is the finest on the western landscape and makes it obvious how the Plains tribes could be so prosperous in following the big herds that provided so much.

As a hunter and a raiser of domestic buffalo, I appreciate your message of conservation and scientific management of buffalo rather than the political mismanagement of existing wild herds. Please contact me if you are aware of any organizations that can improve the range of these animals so I can lend a small hand. Buffalo have light feet on the ground and improve any range they are allowed to naturally graze. I know there is extreme controversy about transmission of brucellosis from buffalo to cattle. I'm not aware of any scientific studies that show buffalo actually have this disease. I am aware that NPS studies have shown the vector of brucellosis to cattle through wild animals is via ELK not Buffalo. You present the best portrait of a intelligent hunter who knows how to protect wildlife. Every live in this world must make a living. For bison, their living is to sacrifice a small number of animals to allow the herd to grow. PS I hope you enjoyed the meat . There is done better.

nice hunt, thanks for sharing. I love buffalo burgers and eat them when ever I spot it offered on a restaurant menu. Probably not from a wild herd like your bison. I have tagged many deer and a few cow elk in my younger years. Much better eating than store bought meat.It's a shame that anti hunters and anti gun people troll hunting videos and leave nonsense comments. Perhaps in their myopic views they are content eating cage raised chicken and livestock doped with growth hormones and fillers, yet they are disgusted and scream bloody murder when hunters ethically harvest game animals. Appears they are so miserable that they feel compelled to spread their worthless rhetoric onto others.

You are probably one of those people that thinks food is made in a factory and then put in grocery stores. If you did actual objective research, you would find that it is because of hunters, controlled licensed hunting and then conservation practices mostly funded by hunters, that has resulted in the vast numbers of wildlife that exist today. People in the 1800's? They used the animals till there were very few left by 1900. People like teddy Roosevelt and others like him, including hunters are the ones who started the conservation efforts, that resulted in our current numbers of wildlife. It sure wasn't the city sprawl and urbanites that did it. And if you knew anything about management of animals, you would know the purpose of harvesting a percentage of the animals each year for the preservation and well being of the rest. Also, you don't seem to realize that humans are also part of nature, but modern society doesn't seem to understand that, sitting in their fancy apartments in their urban surroundings, oblivious to how real life is happening all around them.

I don’t encourage shooting animals but I’m ok because I understand why they permit it and mostly because I respect your decision to not take that shot simply because it wasn’t what that animal deserved. Good on you sir all the best and stay safe out there 🙂.

Randy, I enter into this draw every year, and hope to be able to pull a tag like you did. what were some of the challenges you faced with this specific hunt. Who did you look to for guidance / direction?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 лет назад
Challenges are knowing young bulls from cows. Not hard, once you learn the difference. MT has a great orientation package. Other challenge is getting one out of a roadless area. That was no easy task.

mcopeland Randy is legitimately the most genuine "TV show" hunter that there is. He's very upfront and honest when it comes to draws and over the counter tags etc. He is the definition of an ethical hunter. Watch the rest of his content. You'll see
@mcopeland05
@mcopeland05 7 лет назад
I wasn't saying he was unethical. I am sure he says which tags are lotterys and which are over the counter. it may not even be him or his producers pulling strings to get him tags. it could be people in the wildlife and fisheries recognizing names and doing favors that werent asked for. It was not a shot at him, it was an observation of how it seems that if you are better known you have a better shot at winning lottery tags is all.

mcopeland meh. I think they are the group of people who have been applying for 25 years religiously and never missed. Unlike your average joe who couldn’t get a tag after applying twice over a decade

Yes, they did hang around. The camera guy had to watch our backs and chase them off when they got too close.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Everything I have ever read has told me that bison have never infected cattle with brucellosis. The claim is that the elk infect the cattle. I am all for free range bison and a possible future for more bison hunting. I have also read about how much control the Montana department of livestock has. Would sure be nice if sportsmen/sportswomen had more chances to harvest bison, instead of the park trapping them and from there who knows. Love you show Randy.
@Fresh_Tracks

Thanks for watching. I have asked if there are any confirmed transmissions from bison to cattle and nobody has been able to provide me with evidence of such. Yet, APHIS continues to provide these strange rules that impose serious financial consequences on cattle producers for positives that occur within their herds. The archaic APHIS rules are a large part of the political problems associated with bison management, with bison being named as a transmission vector though no evidence has been shown to support that.

Over 400# of processed meat, not counting the heart, tongue, and tenderloins we took home directly, without giving to the processor.

*I have a Remington .308 under the Christmas tree, I am going to Montana soon. Season and permits seem confusing. I am determined to get me a Buffalo at least once in my lifetime, bull or cow makes no difference. Meat, hide, bone, sinew, and maybe horns if I get a bull... all will be used! How is the fat? Like beef?*

They have evolved as the biggest, baddest animals around. They had no need to run from danger. When annoyed, they circle the herd and face the annoyance/danger.
