Years ago I used to catch & kill Mohave rattlesnakes (in Arizona) for their skins and rattles. Kind of made a hobby out of it. Beautiful skins make great bow laminates, hat rings, boots, and so much more.

For rattler season in CO I liked to use a miniature version of classic old west guns. A Rossi 20 gauge side by side 'stagecoach' gun with dual triggers and hammers, a Henry lever action rifle with .22 shorts, and a Heritage Arms six shooter revolver usually also with .22 shorts. At such close ranges the .22 short kills instantly with a shot to the head but only makes slightly more noise than a BB gun. Since you are essentially shooting at the ground, it's nice to use as low power a round as possible to minimize ricochet threat. Since rattlesnakes are still dangerous even when dead, I usually lop the head off right on the spot rather than have it anywhere near me (like in the pillow case you collect the carcasses in (assuming you are keeping them to skin/eat). For this a good old fashioned Army E-Tool is perfect. Lightweight, folds up into a carrier that fits on my daypack, and can take being chopped into the hard soil without damage like a machete or axe. Knockoffs available at Wal-Mart.

Not sure how your rodent problem is... but if I were you I wouldn't be killing too many of these snakes. They are precious when you have plague rodents running around.
This comment is seven months old so I'm not sure why I'm replying, but he's only shooting venomous snakes and leaving the non-venomous snakes alone, and protecting his property and his kids by killing the venomous snakes.
Snakes are good for the ecosystem and won't bother humans if humans don't bother them, I have a wild Prairie rattlesnake that I keep as a pet and he has a very good temperament. Btw I'm 15 years old, a pro gun, pro 2A, pro hunting, conservative.
