Nancy and I hit the beach on Lake Superior again in search of more rocks. We also ran into Patrick who was on the hunt for gold.

Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

There are so many colorful rocks & you pick up plain old quartz! As you were walking the waterline I’m like oooh a red one! A pink one! Green! 😂 And your granite is so pretty! You could sell those rocks on eBay, ppl would buy them for aquariums & crafts or even small landscaping! It’s so funny, your bucket only had 2 rocks in it….I’d be filling several to haul home in my car 😂 my kids hate to take me to the river cuz I always want them to hoist full buckets into the back of my car ha ha!
@MichiganRocks

I just can't help taking a super white quartz home once in awhile. They are sort of boring, but I still like them. This was late I the season and I already had enough tumbling rocks too keep me busy over the winter. I am pretty selective though. You'll just have to get used to the disappointment if you watch my videos.

Yes, that's why they're called Great Lakes. You can't see across them, they get very rough sometimes and there have been a lot of shipwrecks. In Alpena, where I live, Thunder Bay and the surrounding area is a National Marine Sanctuary to protect all the shipwrecks. There are a lot of them.

The mining setup was interesting in the beginning. I wonder how much he ended up with. I really like the nice striped rock. That one hurt a little when you left it behind. I guess that you can’t take them all. The fall leaves were beautiful.I liked it when you said what you find on the outside isn’t always what you get on the inside. Sometimes the inside is a nice surprise when the outside isn’t great. . That applies to people too.

Patrick was doing really well with the gold. He said he hadn't planned on staying all day, but was doing so well that he was going to keep at it until dark. I recently saw a video with a man and his son who had a similar set up. He said that the limit on gold collecting is 1/2 troy ounce per person per year. He also said that you could run a little sluice all summer long and never collect that much. Lake Superior isn't a place where you're going to get enough gold to amount to anything but a nice day on the beach. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E6bLk608Rnw.html Maybe Patrick will jump in here and tell us how much he had by the end of the day. @MichiganRocks

On a beach I go to regularly, the high water was washing out a deck built too close to the water. Then the next year, there was about a hundred feet of rocky beach in front of that deck. the rocks are over a foot deep at the waterline, and the areas nearby are still suffering from the high water. Water is a powerful force that can move a lot of rocks and sand in a hurry.

@9:15, where I live you can find rocks similar to that (Omar) but they are formed in river currents where smaller stones are forced to gouge out concavities in larger stones by the action of the river currents…perhaps they are really weak points in a rock that the current wears away until the broken off bit is disintegrated? I’m no geologist so I’m just guessing. I find them fascinating no matter how they are formed or where they are from!
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 года назад
I think those are called potholes. They are in a lot of Michigan rivers too. Omarolluks have holes that are formed by a softer mineral eroding out of the rock. They do look sort of similar, but are formed differently. Here's an article about Omars: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omarolluk

Can you help me id a couple stones I find frequently hunting on the beaches on my length of lake michigan. I'm just a tad south of Milwaukee in Wisconsin. I'm trying to find lake superior agates and frequently find stones with large bands of quartz around them . Im thinking they are a form of agate possibly? You seem pretty familiar with the rocks in this area. I'm just wondering if these are keepers or if they should go out into my rock garden with my other treasures I brought home to id

I'm pretty bad at identifying rocks. Personally, I don't worry if someone else thinks it's a keeper. If I like it, I keep it. If it doesn't do much for me, then. I leave it for someone else. If you really want me to take a look at your rocks, you can send me a picture on Instagram. A better option is to post it on an online forum of some sort. There are some in the lake, but not nearly as many. I don’t see them where I go. There are more in the big ports of Duluth and Thunder Bay. Generally, the water is too cold for them and there is not enough calcium for them to grow their shells.
