This time we take a closer look at the old mining area near Wittichen-Schenkenzell in the Black Forest in Germany. Mining for silver and cobalt started as early as 1517, but nobody cared for the uranium ore which was also quite prominent in this region.
Shortly after World War II the focus shifted and uranium became sought after by many countries. The deposit near Wittichen was known, so people began prospecting. Even though uranium was found in abundance on the old dumps from silver mining activities, the yield was deemed uneconomical. Uranium mining never started, but even as late as the 1980s prospection work continued to a limited extent.
After the relatively big uranium mining site in Menzenschwand (visited at 00:56:30) was closed for good in 1991, the time for uranium mining in the Black Forest came to an end.
Somewhere in this video i called Menzenschwand "the only West German uranium mine", which is not completly true. There where some very small mines for example in Bavaria, but never to a noteworthy magnitude.
Since most large uranium deposits where located in the eastern part of Germany, the West German efforts never came close to the quantities mined by the Wismut-Corporation.
Today Wittichen is a very beautiful and quiet small town that is visited by mineral collectors from all over the world. Not necessarily for uranium, but all sorts of different minerals.

Hey buddy can you make a video on your stuff you carry in your backpack for when youre out rock hunting? im curious about all the gear you have!
@RADiOiNactivity
@RADiOiNactivity 5 месяцев назад
I don´t think i´ll make a video about that, but i can tell you what i usually carry around: - backpack (Helikon EDC) or the larger TT Raid Pack MKIII - multiple MOLLE pouches from Helikon Tex and Tasmanian Tiger - additional shoulder bag for camera stuff - RadiaCode 101, RadiaCode 102 and the Raysid as my preferred devices for searching uranium ore - sometimes additional devices like the Automess 6150 AD6 and/or the RadiaScan 701A (very rarely also the Gamma Scout) - cut resistant Mechanix gloves (Pursuit D5) for climbing - large quantities of disposable gloves (made from latex or nitrile) - model making paint jars with gasket from Tamiya for storing small samples - zip lock bags for larger samples - small trash bags to carry the samples as far away from my body as possible / and for actual trash :) - Headlamp (Petzl Tactikka) - Flashlights (Fenix PD40R V3 + Fenix PD32 V2 + Holex UV LED) - 1-2 waterbottles (Wildo Hiker Bottle) - gas stove (Primus Express Spider II) - cookig pot (stainless steel pot made by Esbit) with a gas cartridge inside - instant coffee / apple tea / convenience food - fixed blade from TRC Knives (model "This Is Freedom") - pocket knife (Victorinox Hunter) - hammer (Mason's hammer from a local hardware store -> will probably get replaced by a geologist's hammer from Estwing soon) - pen (Fisher Space Pen looking like a .338 bullet) - adhesive labels for marking samples - softshell jacket + poncho (made by Helikon Tex) - waterproof pack bag with powerbanks (65w power delivery) and batteries; cables; ... Camera equipment: - GoPro 11 with 5 batteries + headstrap - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra + small tripod - Canon EOS R6 Mark II with one or multiple lenses: RF 35mm f/1.8 ; RF 50mm f/1.8 ; RF 24-240 f/4-6.3 ; RF L 100mm f/2.8 - larger tripod for the Canon made by Rollei That´s all i remember off the top of my hat. This is not supposed to be an advertisement. I never received anything from any of these brands for free. I bought everything with my own money.

Thanks a lot for sharing my friend ! I've got my radiacode 102, any advice about where to find this kind of natural uranium ? can we find some everywhere or we need to go to specific places ? (what kind of ground i need to look for ?) Continue this good content !
@RADiOiNactivity
@RADiOiNactivity Год назад
Uranium is present everywhere in small concentrations, but that does not mean you can find it at any random place. You have to do some research and find places, where veins of uranium reach the surface, which is a relatively rare occurrence. The other option is finding locations, where mining activities have led to uranium being moved to the surface. The uranium i found in this video was a byproduct of mining for silver and cobalt. If you visit closed uranium mining sites, chances are you can also find something. When the goal is mining thousands of tons nobody cares for one rock dropped somewhere. Low concentrations of uranium are also often found in granite. Use mindat.org to check for (closed) mining sites in your area.

Can you please let us know the make & model of that nice UV torch you were using to check fluorescence? Thanks!
@RADiOiNactivity
@RADiOiNactivity Год назад
Its a torch from a large german industry supplier: www.hoffmann-group.com/US/en/hus/Factory-equipment/Lamps-lights/Torches/Torch-LED-and-UV-with-rechargeable-battery/p/081518-UV-LED I would recommend buying a 365 nm wavelength UV torch. My model uses a 395 nm LED which is emitting quite a lot of visible blue light.

Thank you very much for another great video! They make my evenings better, when I do not have the time to go prospecting the tailings for uranium myself... I shared a link for your channel with our Czech FB community of uranium mineral collectors and radiation enthusiasts named Zhava Mista, so I hope it brings some traffic your way. 🙂 Just a quick question: in one of your previous videos (unfortunately I cannot remember which one) I noticed you are using some sort of RadiaCode holder, which can be attached to the telescopic pole used for RaySid. I think you also mentioned it was 3D printed, could you maybe share the files for printing it? It would be much appreciated... 🙂
@RADiOiNactivity
@RADiOiNactivity Год назад
Thank you very much for the kind words! The holder was printed by a friend of mine. I hope he saved the files. If he did i will gladly share them. I also made a sketch somewhere... Even if the documents are lost i can measure the device again and re-draw the sketch.

@@RADiOiNactivity That would be great! I do not have the experience or time to design the holder myself and it would be a very helpful addition to my prospecting gear, since now I am using a very improvised holder, which isn't really safe for the device... 😀

Was ist dein schärfstes Stück das du bisher gefunden hast?
@RADiOiNactivity
@RADiOiNactivity Год назад
