it might sound strange to say but hunting with man, dog and falcon as a team. is a great way to enjoy nature! I myself have taken the advice of a couple of guys and swaped meat for kill.. A guy that I hunt with freezes the falcons kill before feeding it to the falcon. cutting grinding and then thaw kills virus and bacteria from wild animals. great video ty sharing

Steven Spooner I’m passionate about flying raptors as close to their natural wild state as possible. I also really enjoy trying to get footage that showcases their elusive flying skills. Most of the time they are unsuccessful at hunting, their wild cousins really do have a hard life! To hear comments like this really does give me more determination to make other videos. Thanks

Que versátil!! Caza bien aire - aire, aire - tierra, hasta aire - agua, hoy, compite en el mismo nicho con el harris, cual es más efectivo?? Que ventajas y desventajas tiene frente al harris??
@hawkinsfalconry
@hawkinsfalconry 5 лет назад
Cristobal Wagemann Thanks...
@cristobalwagemann9208
@cristobalwagemann9208 5 лет назад
@hawkinsfalconry
@hawkinsfalconry 5 лет назад

Incredible, this is how I hunt with my goshawks, here in Spain it is frowned upon to hunt with goshawks from trees but I love it is how you should always hunt!
@hawkinsfalconry
@hawkinsfalconry 3 года назад
If modern falconers looked at history past the industrial revolution they would realise that most falconry was from the following-on method. The simple reason that 99% of falconers only fly off the glove is lack of time. It takes considerable amounts of commitment and time to get a goshawk hunting as a team following and anticipating the flush. I always try to emulate the wild birds lifestyle within falconry. I’d love to see a glove flying goshawk take wild pigeons on a regular basis. Yes, glove flying has its place in falconry, it’s absolutely unbelievable to walk through thick woodland with a goshawk in yarak plugged in to your glove. It’s electric for sure! 600 years ago they only flew peregrines off-the-glove? How times have changed! People need to look at fact based science and history rather than trying to reinvent practices that are proven to work. I’ve done exactly the same with my Bonelli’s Eagle, soaring, following-on and glove flights. People need to educate themselves and stop being so close minded, especially in the Western world... Thanks Nigel

@jays1752

The Goshawk is probably the biggest bad ass in the avian world. As far as agility, speed, aggressiveness and determination go, no other raptor can match it. Peregrines can swoop faster, Eagles, Buteos and Owls can take larger prey, but none of those birds have ever been a match for a Goshawk in mixed terrain. And in open aerial combat even Peregrines have never been successful against Goshawks. Their agility is off the charts. Very impressive predators.
@hawkinsfalconry
@hawkinsfalconry 5 лет назад
Jay S Yes they sure are awesome raptors to hunt with.
@Semendrija123
@Semendrija123 Год назад
I don't know where did you get that info, but from my experience and many other colleague falconers, the Peregrines are superior in "open aerial combat"! There are few reasons for that, and the first one is higher top level speed. According to my GPS measurements, the peregrines have on average almost 20 percent higher max. speed! My Goshawks have top level speed during hunting in the range of 70-80 km/h, but the peregrines on average fly at 100 km/h during pursuit hunts. The other reason is higher diving speed. There is simply nothing that can beat the peregrine in a dive contest! The peregrine has the build, and feather structure that is made for a stoop and high G forces that are achieved during high speed maneuvering. The third reason is stamina. Peregrines can fly at top speed for miles and miles, and the goshawk can only have limited bursts of speed. In the open air, where the Goshawk can't exploit the element of surprise and incredible acceleration from the standstill (I have measured my female with GPS going from 0-70 km/h in 1,3 sec.), the Peregrine is generally the aggressor because it can exploit its superior speed, both in horizontal and vertical plane. Here is the video where we can see that the wild peregrine is chasing off the goshawk from its hunting ground with the an ease: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o55GBX21cUA.html We have also seen few instances where the territorial female peregrine has killed the female goshawk that has entered her space during breeding season, and we also had one case during falconry meeting where the female peregrine (Peales subspecies, very big female with hunting weight of 1200g!) caught the male goshawk and started eating him alive! The Peregrine female was climbing, and suddenly she started a shallow dive, going to the distance. On the other part of the field the goshawk was released on the pheasant and the peregrine went after them. The pheasant put to the cover, and the female peregrine snatched the male goshawk! She took the scalp of the goshawk, but the owner was able to save the goshawk before the peregrine was able to give it a death bite to the neck. People often underestimate the heart and aggression of the peregrine! We have male peregrines with the flying weight between 525 and 560 g that kill cock pheasants 3 times their weight, and they also have a bad habit of attacking other birds of prey. Our immature peregrine males from this year have chased and attacked buzzards on regular basis! One male caught the buzzard and fell to the ground with him, and was attacked by other buzzard at the same time, and he was able to survive even if I was almost half a mile away running to save him! I didn't have the chance to film that, but we have filmed him expressing his frustration and aggression on the buzzards during hunting: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A76rZYm5D8k.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8MGoYcEJDDI.html

LeMTails There’s a duck on the water at 6:35. They wear a small bell for close proximity and also wear a small electronic telemetry tag that’s used with a receiver that can track them up to 50 miles. Roger James Hi Roger, yes I hear you. I’m out most days flying on my own so don’t have multiple camera angles. Unfortunately with goshawks they fly fast and far so to get footage close up of the bind on my own is nigh on impossible. This footage was taken over a few seasons with different birds. Anyone can get 20ft binds out of the air close up. Falconry isn’t about close-up multiple kills, it’s about spending as much time in the field with your bird giving them a life as close to wild as possible, with quality long flights and good rewards. Thanks Nigel

TheDocteurJackal Thanks. I normally track-pack our goshawks. But I also attach two telemetry mounts to different feathers. One for a bell (small size 0 or 1 Noble bell attached by cable tie) The other for backup telemetry and tail guard whilst travelling. Don’t like the idea of attaching plectrum to two feathers (especially on a goshawk) because if you have a problem you will lose both feathers. Thanks Nigel

Quite easy to do if you’re out in the field all the time and analyse their behaviour and more importantly concentrate on obedience once per week to keep them from becoming too independent. Good land and glove flying for a couple of years first to let them know what the human is for and they will actively follow-on no problem at all. We specialised in catching pigeons on a regular basis following-on in woodland. Absolutely spectacular flights and their fitness is as if wild. Essentially I’m flying a wild bird then taking him home for a safe news with a full crop everyday. To witness a trained bird that’s given the opportunity to live a life as close to wild and have the time to fly most days sure is a huge privilege. Thanks

Absolutely awesome birds to have the privilege to work with. They never cease to amaze me with their woodland stealth flights!

Actually, the goshawk misses about 8 out of 10 hunts. This is bullshit hobby falsely portraying the species.

Forest Dweller Yes well done you’re totally right. All raptors have a very high miss ratio, coupled with persecution from humans and starvation, that’s why their survival rates are very low. This video was filmed over months of flying between 5 to 8 hours most days to highlight their hunting techniques. Quite obvious really if you spend time with them.

The hit & miss ratio does vary somewhat i hear between species. Sparrowhawks i see to be most effective usually. Those are well adapted to urban setting perhaps as a factor. The buzzards are well adapted as well but seem to miss more, even hunting through traffic. The goshawk adaptation here is pretty amazing, but they do not fare well. I proved in my research how they actually use garbage which rang a few alarm bells....not a good thing. As you must know there are no reliable counts on any such species but i think the goshawks are well down. The hunters here hate them as well and kill them. I followed 4 goshawk trees/nests over the past years but they are all gone. Too bad, i do like those sneaky bastards....
