Huntington Beach: Boat Explosion Injures Multiple People

11.01.2020 | 12:48 PM | HUNTINGTON BEACH - Authorities received 911 calls regarding a boat that had exploded into flames in the Huntington Beach Harbor.
It is reported that 6 occupants of the boat reportedly jumped off the boat and into the water.
Three victims were picked up out of the water by rescuers, and they were found suffering from multiple burn injuries.
The owner of the boat also jumped out of the boat and made it back to shore, however was missing for a short period of time before he showed up at the Yacht club uninjured.
Fire rescuers determined the time in which the owner was missing to be suspicious and have turned him over to sheriff’s investigators for further questioning..
The boat was a 32 foot Chaparral powerboat named “The Neptune” that blew up, however the fire reportedly self-extinguished soon after. Sheriffs deputies towed the boat to the substation.

I read on another video posted regarding this accident there were witnesses and one of the neighboring boats helped in rescuing these occupants. In that video there was no mention of the owner abandoning for a short time. There was however mention about a “ gas build-up on the boat”. It wasn’t stated how this “ gas build-up” was observed, smelled, spoken about etc. I believe I also read that it was a family aboard this board. I also thought it could have been propane explosion if they had a propane container on board as some boats do for cooking or outdoor heat. I didn’t understand it to be a charter etc. thoughts and prayers for all a speedy recovery. Burns are horrific to experience. Thankfully they all jumped in the water and stopped the burning process.

Whys it suspicious? If it were insurance fraud or something, i doubt hed do it with so many ppl on board. Maybe they were drunk and something happened.

Happens all the time with a gas powered boat with inboard (or I/O) engines. The engines are in a confined space and gas fume buildup can explode if any spark is near the source. These boats have blowers that need to be ran for about 5 minutes after re-fueling and have special electrical parts such as starters and alternators to help keep this from happening. We have a boat similar to this one. I also do a visual inspection and sniff test of the engine compartment before starting it after a re-fuel.
