Where do I buy one that isn't a rip off. Right now I'm seeing $500 at the cheapest which is a rip off for some wood and strings and guitar tuners. Whats with them being so overpriced?!?
The long and short of it, is try to build one yourself and you'll see. Veneering the wheel, perfect alighnment, keys that fit the holes but do not make too mauch attrition, alignment of the tangents, I could go on for hours, telling you of how building a Gurdy is a long and complex process. I have made many videos on beginner gurdies, I think you should watch them, however, you can't go cheaper than 500$
@@CaptainGurdy hi, thanks for the reply, I did watch your video about buying a hurdy-gurdy and it was helpful. I still disagree tho, I can't see how such an expensive price like $500 or more can be justified. I think the makers of hurdy-gurdys know they have the market cornered because big companies don't make them so they can charge whatever they like. I saw a video where a guy made a really good one for $100 so it's not like it costs that much to make. Hopefully someone will come out with an affordable one someday because until then it seems like only rich people are allowed to play hurdy-gurdy which sucks
@@trainfan768 Hi there. I don't want to sound gatekeeping, quite the contrary. But let me side with the makers for once. Let's assume that you can make a good Gurdy for 100$ of materials. Then it needs time. I think most makers can't make more than one in a month. Say they make 2 per month. They pay rent, energy, taxes etc. This means that if they don't earn at least 3000$ per month, they're broke. So one way or another they have to charge you 1500$ per instrument. And i'm considering a very lucky case. The only possible way out of this would be finding a way to streamline all processes, like in a factory, so that eventually you can make not one, but 10 gurdies in a month. That would be a game changer. It's exactly what Gateway Gurdy is trying to achieve.

I know you are not trying to be gatekeeping but the fact is that by being so expensive they are purposely keeping more people from playing the hurdy-gurdy and only the very rich or privelaged are allowed to play it. I was interested in the Gate Way Gurdy but it is still $500 which is just far too much in my opinion. I could understand that price for a really really professional one but for a starter model $200 should be the most you should spend. I did a lot of research about how to make hurdy-gurdys and they are very simple, if I didn't live in an apartment with no tools I would make them myself and finally make the hurdy-gurdy available to everyone but until now I will have to sadly wait because I am not part of the elite who can afford one. @@trainfan768 hello just read your posts and I agree with you generally , makers largely charge for their labour , however you don't have to be in the rich category or privaliged category in order to buy one ,you just have to be in the save up category in order to buy one ,
