Best metal band in America. There's actually 3 vocalists in the band. The nasally Ozzy sounding one is Brent, lead guitar, Drummer Brann has a clear, clean voice. Bassist Troy has a growly bellow.

Great song off a flawless record, wish more people checked them out, they’ve legit got the best discography in metal since their debut in 02, legit have at minimum 3-4 masterpiece records. Brann Dailor is a god on drumming, his drumming gets so so much crazier on their older heavier stuff, songs like “mother puncher” “workhorse” “March of the fire ants” “capillarian crest” and many other. Highly recommend mother puncher it’s a certified banger or workhorse, drumming is so sick and the riffs are godly. anyway good reaction man, mastodon rules.

Thanks Hurm, that was a lot to take in…like trying to slam down a 5 course meal in 13 minutes.😊 Excellent analysis though. The drummer Brann Dailor is one of the best in the business. Not sure about jazz training but his main inspiration was Phil Collins and 70s Genesis. You may recall he also sings on more recent Mastodon songs like Teardrinker which you reacted to a while ago. Brent Hinds is the lead singer on The Last Baron and reminds me of Ozzy too. Troy Sanders on bass, who also sings (loud!) and Bill Kelliher on rhythm guitar 😎👌

I looked into it and he's talked about the Jazz influence in interviews! Here is his IMDB bio. Brann Dailor is the drummer for metal band Mastodon, widely considered nowadays one of the best metal bands on earth. His drumming is influenced by the progressive-rock of the seventies ad has a very tasty jazzy flavor, it's rich of improvising and very rarely shows common rock beats. He stated in more than one occasion that he was a voracious listener of ELP, Genesis, King Crimson and the whole Canterbury prog-rock scene, a love that he inherited from his parents. He is now considered one of the best drummers in heavy music and, due to the increasing success of his band, was offered to perform at the annual Modern Drummer Festival (2006). - IMDb Mini Biography By: Tommy

As a fellow bass player, I have to say that Troy doesn't really play fast most of the time (this song included), even if Brann is super busy on drums. One thing I've grown to particularly love about his playing is that he very much understands his role within the band, letting the guitars and drums take the spotlight while he sticks mostly to being the glue that ties everything together. Watch the making of from their last album on their YT channel. Troy hilariously but surely explains how he approaches his bass lines, very often simplifying something he had originally written so that it better serves the song(s). And the coolest thing is that, at the end of the day, you will recognize a Mastodon song not by Brent's/Bill's riffing or Brann's drumming, but by Troy's unmistakable tone (gnarly, hairy, dirty as he himself defines it), something his bandmates seem to agree.

As another fellow bass player, no one recognizes a Mastodon song by Troy's incredible, dirty bass tone. It's the drums or the vocals or the riffs that people might recognize. I love the sound Troy gets and have tried to create a similar tone with my bass rig. But his bass tracks are almost always the last part I notice unless I'm active listening, and I think that's exactly what he wants. Although once I notice his crunchy gritty bass tone I can't focus on anything else for the rest of the song lol.
