Hurricane Hilary has been downgraded to category 3 storm but catastrophic flooding remains a major concern as the storm heads towards Southern California. The National Weather Service is asking anyone in the path of the storm to take it serious!
Once Hilary makes landfall in Southern California, it will only be the fourth storm of at least tropical storm strength to hit the area.
LiveNOW from FOX's Josh Breslow spoke with an expert at the National Weather Service in Los Angeles to get the latest information.

For all you deluded native Californians who keep saying this is all just hype and that everything is going to be just fine, take this as a warning from someone who knows- I’m in SD now and will be forced to ride this monster out, but I’ve lived up and down the eastern seaboard and the gulf coast and I can assure you that after having been through three of these, this is as serious as it gets. This is NOT your typical winter storm with a little wind and rain and a few flash floods scattered here and there. This is NOT a Santa Ana wind event. You have no idea what’s coming. Most of you have never experienced 12 straight hours or more of wind and rain, and that’s what in the forecast. Get ready as best as you can. Stock up. EXPECT the power to go out. EXPECT major road closures. EXPECT the stores and gas stations to shut down. This is a REGION WIDE EVENT so if you’re anywhere in Southern California you’re under the gun. The flooding is going to be epic. Unlike anything you’ve ever seen in your lifetime. Most importantly, this is an area that DOES NOT receive this much rainfall in a year much less TWO DAYS, so it doesn’t have to be an actual hurricane to cause catastrophic damage to infrastructure and homes and other property. My personal opinion, based on my own experience is that the governor’s office should have issued evacuation orders for most if not all of the desert communities and inland empire. Stay safe!!!
@nelsonvanvickle8862
@nelsonvanvickle8862 11 месяцев назад
@@Aspect671You don’t understand. This is NOT the kind of Pacific jet stream winter storm coming in from the Aleutian Islands that you’ve experienced. I know what you’re talking about and I guarantee you that you’ve never experienced an actual tropical storm. I have. It is mind numbingly relentless, Lol. And don’t forget, this is coming with lots of embedded thunderstorms and possible tornadic activity. It’s not just about the wind and rain!
@IsThisThePrizeIveWaitedFor
@IsThisThePrizeIveWaitedFor 11 месяцев назад
So you weren’t here over this past winter? We had weeks and weeks of rain. My city got 10” of rain in one day. Whichever hurricanes you’ve experienced on the East Coast were much more severe than what this will be. The cold coastal waters here simply don’t support a hurricane of those magnitudes hitting land.
@IsThisThePrizeIveWaitedFor
@IsThisThePrizeIveWaitedFor 11 месяцев назад
@@Aspect671 we’ll get flooding and mudslides, both of which we get in winter storms. Downed trees and cables is something we experience with the Santa Ana winds. People need to prepare, but we’ll be fine. Also, this storm isn’t lasting for days. It’s coming thru tomorrow and will move up and East by Monday. I’m more scared of fires, which is a possibility with the dry Santa Ana winds. The moisture in this tropical storm should prevent a fire from starting at least.

It’s definitely over hyped, the big story should be how it’s possible the storm tracked the way it did. Other than that the winds will be similar to the east winds we get every year possibly even less intense compared to some years & the places like the mountains & deserts expected to get the heaviest rainfall are used to monsoons & flash flooding.

The area that will be affected isn't equipped to deal with this kind of a storm, which is why it's a big deal.

Please try to understand that the high mountains and deserts of the South West are different from the South East/Gulf Coast with deep soft soil and no mountains. Here the storm piles up on the sides of mountains and the rain comes down hard and pours down the dry washes into the desert valleys, where it's got nowhere to go. The desert floor is a natural concrete called Caliche (ka lee chee) with a few inches of dust on top. Have you ever seen a dry wash turn into a deep river and a desert valley turn into a lake in a few minutes? Life long Desert Rat talking, here. My little country town is going to get hit hard. This isn't even going to be a tropical storm by the time it gets here. What it will be is a very wet storm in a place that can't take that. Hollywood will be fine. It's the inland part of the state that's getting hit.

We do need the rain but the warm water in the gulf in Baja didn’t contribute to this in any way, the fact that the water off northern Baja pacific & SoCal is still mostly in the upper 60’s yet a hurricane was able to track this way should be the bigger story. The focus is clearly misguided.
@ourd0gseven
@ourd0gseven 11 месяцев назад
@@bicenulge765 You don't make any sense, the "Warm Waters" in the Sea of Cortez' will help draw in some moisture for this tropical storm to fuel it from it's outer bands. Imagine the Word changing over time, just don't buy into the Fake Global Warming sh!t (man made)!!
@bicenulge765
@bicenulge765 11 месяцев назад
@@ourd0gseven the topography between the two land masses & the very cold water in the Pacific create a situation where the sea of Cortez would not contribute to much if anything at all to the formation or progression of a hurricane coming off the Pacific although the area can generate & contribute to local & regional weather. They will probably try to blame El Niño but it hasn’t developed enough to have caused this or contributed either. This looks more like weather manipulation but of course that always gets explained away as “global warming”.
@ourd0gseven
@ourd0gseven 11 месяцев назад
@@bicenulge765 Warm air mass rises and will help fuel the storm w/moisture. And in adding, in the 90's I've seen small hurricanes travel right up the center of the Gulf, granted the peninsula of BC & MX mainland shear it up and then downgraded to tropical storm before it hits S. AZ. I'll agree w/you on that, "weather modification" - they even admitted on record they have means to control the weather patterns.

As someone that lives in Florida, and has been through several hurricanes. That’s how it always is the day before it hits. Down at the beach the waves start kicking up but the weather is beautiful. And then it slowly starts raining and then the winds pick up, that’s when the real fun begins. Stay safe, it’s always better to be over prepared, then stuck in your house for a week, with no power, and no hurricane snacks. Because you ate them on day one 😂 also everybody that using a generator. Make sure you have a carbon dioxide meter. And run them outdoors. 🙏🏻

This is nothing new, every large tropical storm this time of year shears and weakens passing Punta Banda Mexico and entering the cooler waters of the mixing of the California Current and California Eddy. This will be a major summer rain event of an El Niño/La Niña cycle on a much less devastating scale of the 1938, 57/58, 65/66, 72/73, 82/83, 97/98 events.

Well, I've seen two floods in the Inland Empire (Riverside/San Bernardino) in my lifetime. The one I remember most is the Rains/Flooding in 1980. San Jacinto, Hemet...etc. The other was February/March 1978. If even those two events happened again you'd have the Coo-Coo Birds yelling Global Warming. Those are two of many heavy downpour/floods of the 60's and 70's.
@ClubXXXPoison

It’s called “global warming” for a reason. It refers to average temperatures globally. And this year is the hottest globally in recorded history. Coo-Coo birds smarter than climate change deniers.
