We had our first hurricane (hurricane Fiona) experience at the cabin. Although we had completely different plans, the weather had something else in mind. Living this far out and alone there is a lot to think about being off grid in the wilderness especially in storm season.

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Porter is a super hero. He has such a great attitude. I know the girls pay him, but he always goes above and beyond. I’m so glad the four girls are all okay. Actually, they’re not only okay, they’re thriving, and have a renewed appreciation and sense of purpose for their journey. This was a beautiful video. Definitely one of my favorites!

Respectfully, take it from this ol' septuagenarian these 'ain't girls; these are WOMEN!
@smellyolegoat150
@smellyolegoat150 2 года назад
@@JGW845 I know very well that these are women in all of the very best definitions of that word. I’m referring to the four of them. They refer to Bella and Izzy as “the girls”. I’ve heard them and their friends refer to the whole family as “the girls”. So I refer to the family of four as “the girls” as an all inclusive term of endearment, not in any way disrespecting their power, their savvy, or their unmatched capabilities. You don’t call female dogs women. I guess I could refer to the group as the ladies, but that’s not the terminology that they and their loved ones seem to use to refer to their little four member nuclear family. I do appreciate the respect you were showing Crystal and Jazzy by making that point though. 😉👏
@JGW845
@JGW845 2 года назад
@@smellyolegoat150 That's why I started out with "respectfully." I get that you mean it as an affectionate term. If I was to include the dogs too I would probably use the term "ladies" as they are such a class act.

In May 1953 my family arrived in southern Ontario! October 1954 Hurricane Hazel hit Toronto as an extratropical Category 1 storm! I was just shy of turning 7! I have memories of looking out at the parking lot next to our home! Since then I have many more memories of living through extreme weather! It is truly amazing to be able to look back in the immediate present afterwards. I've said it before! If you aren't a Canadian when you arrive, one year of Canadian extreme weather will make you one! It's what connects and brings us all together! Congratulations for surviving your first major storm! Peace

We live on a gulf island in BC and have tons of power outages here, so although we're technically "on grid" for electrical/phone/internet, we also have solar battery packs for our phones/computers, woodstove for heat, water cisterns and a berkey for clean water, headlamps, and always keep our 72 hour emergency packs updated and our pantry full. We also never let our car gas tank get below half. Doesn't hurt to be prepared, especially knowing we are long over due for a big earthquake here.

You both got everything done in good order prior to Hurricane Fiona. I'm in North San Diego, mild weather most of the time, summer was insanely hot everywhere, but no huge storms. And this past week, Hurricane Ian slammed big chunks of Florida, 3 million were out of power at one point, 23.7 feet of flood/surge water in some areas. 1000's of permanent RV's , travel trailers, mobile homes which there are many, all underwater. Some folks have even lost their lives. 😯😥. Yet many areas didn't flood, but sustained high winds. It's a lot to comprehending. You two are in a good spot, the forest around you protected you 💖🌈💖🌈💖

That hurricane was super hairy and could have changed your lives in a terrible way. Thank goodness you guys and the dogs are okay. Great job preparing, and big shout outs to Porter. What a super hero. Seriously, you should get that guy a cape and a costume. He deservers so much more credit, Also shout out to the local community for looking out for one another. Your surrounded by good people, and it's inspiring to us all.

It's funny. I've been through a few hurricanes, and whenever you come through all right, you think "Whew, we go lucky this time. It could have been so much worse!" But you tend to gloss over the fact that the REASON you came through so light was because you worked so hard to be ready for it! I imagine all your year round neighbors prepare just as hard, but can you imagine how you would have fared if this hurricane hit when you had only been at your cabin for a month or so? The difference is YOU TWO! It's your hard work and your spirit. So I'm glad you came through this so easily, but don't forget to give yourselves credit for doing your part very well and being ready for it.

The shutter idea another viewer had is a good idea - they can be very practical and decorative at the same time. I’d love to see a better lock on your front door. Also, maybe take another look around at your surrounding trees that may have potential to hit any of your structures. So glad both of you and the puppies are safe!

Only half way through video, but I am so proud of you ladies. No panic and no rushing around doing nothing. I have a friend sho lives in Florida and with Fiona and Ian hitting, she just froze in place. She had to be picked up and carried out to another of her friends' truck and evacuate. Again, as part of those who care for you two, pus the dogs, I want to say how impressed I am.

So happy y’all made it ok. Living in Texas my whole life on the coast has taught me to never take water for granted, it can kill and destroy any and everything, but it can be beautiful too. I live in the desert of west Texas now and miss the rain dearly and wish a storm would come through the other side of the states so we could get some rain from it, but that rarely happens. Stay safe and enjoy your green landscape.

I'm so glad that you ladies did so well and only your firewood got soaked, which can be replaced. It's great that your shed arrived in time to store all your louse items in it. I hope Tyler and Tod were fortunate, as well.

I'm in Florida former Texan I've been through multiple Hurricanes, you'll be fine. Remember Hurricane Season isn't finished until late November sometimes first 2 weeks of December. Always have a food pantry stocked with food, water, batteries, Emergency Radio, Walkie Talkies or CB Radio, toiletries, medications, gas tanks full on Vehicle and extra gas tanks. . Plenty of wood for heat or cooking. Flashlights are necessary, dog food. Make sure any flying objects are anchored down. Trampoline needs to be put away or it'll fly away and get destroyed. Board up windows if wind is too strong that you can have flying branches or debris hit your windows. Good Luck and be safe. We just went through Hurricane Ian here in Florida. We're ok. I'm near the Jacksonville area got lots of rain and strong winds but not as bad as Southern Florida. Always be prepared for Hurricanes and Freeze's during Winter. Lots of love from Florida.

My husband and I lived through Hurricane Katrina, our city home in New Orleans has minimal damage thank goodness but we completely lost our vacation home on Lake Pontchartrain and 3 cars. Suggestion: shutters for your windows and a retractable cover for the wood pile? Thank God you came through so well, Tyler and Todd, what a clean up for them 👍🌈🌈❤️🌈🌈❤️🌈🌈❤️🌈🌈❤️🌈🌈❤️🌈

We were down that way during Hurricane Fiona, near Pictou in a rented 30 foot mobile home for a vacation. It was a bad as you showed, but everyone pulled together and we all made it work. Community, even among strangers, is a powerful thing.

Ladies, you are heroic! As a former Texan, I've lived through Severe Thunderstorms, Tornados, a couple of Hurricanes, a direct hit from a lightning strike to my house, a Blizzard and a dust storm. The Lightning Strike wiped out ALL of my Electronics and my computers. (Thank God I had an external hard drive with all my content completely unplugged and on a shelf in the closet.) Fortunately, I was insured and everything was replaced. Live strong and free.

Ladies, some experience: add some tiedowns around where your outdoor things live: the hot tub, the gas grill, etc. Then at the next storm, you can throw your covers on things and then back the covers up with something like a cargo net or similar, and fasten that down to the tiedowns with cam straps. A bit of extra anchorage for your lighter gadgets (goodbye, flying gas grill!) in addition to assuring that your covers stay put.

I live in Pictou County, and we have been wiped out by the storm up here. Huge swaths of people here still don’t have power after 10 days. We have so much tree loss, it is absolutely devastating. I love watching the videos you gals share with the world. Come up to Pictou County anytime for a visit. We’d love to have you (once all the roads have been cleared from the trees and power poles!)

I too recently (this summer )moved to Nova Scotia (cape Breton) from Ontario. Gave up my 20 year career for a better life. I too never experienced a hurricane. Watching your video totally put me back 2 weeks ago. I too was stressed with the unknown. Like you guys lived in an area that was sheltered and not costal. Glad you all safe. Love the videos.

I live in Ponce, PR. south of the island. We got hit by Fiona with very high winds and about 25” of water. That was 2 weeks ago. I was without power nor water for about 20 days. Right there is little water pressure and the power comes and goes. It was terrible, not comparable to hurricane Maria in 2017 but lots of damage was done. The island is about 80-85% with power. The center, south and west were the main sectors impacted. Happy for you girls. Love following you and seeing how self sufficient you are. Un abrazo desde Ponce, Puerto Rico🤗

Being from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, was there until I was 21, I remember 2 hurricanes when I was growing up. I've seen the frequency of them pick up in Nova Scotia considerably over the last 15 years, and they aren't getting nicer. In a weird twist, now I live in Toronto. It's like we flipped places. And I want to go into an off grid life style as I'm finding I don't really like big cities as much as I used to. They are lifeless in many ways. I want to be challenged everyday still. Challenged to survive. Challenged to learn. Challenged to grow. An off grid life, from what I've seen, would do just that. I'm also sick and tired of giving everyone else my hard earned money and each year have nothing to show for the work and life I've lived. Seeing the both of you on your property back in my home province really makes me think the life you, Eamon and Bec, Max and Occy, Trent & Allie, Shawn James (My Self Reliance), are all living the lifestyle I want to have. I just have to get my wife here from the Philippines and show her that it can be a very great lifestyle to have. Unlike VanLifers, I spent a majority of my life in tour buses, planes, trains, touring the world working, and in a way there are a lot of similarities between VanLife and Off Grid Living and Touring as a Stage and Instrument Technician. Your modern version id=s the backwards of what I used to live for, and now at 51 I'm wanting the life you have and want to leave my old life behind and move on which is moving somewhat backwards to where I was, but atleast it feels like where I'm supposed to be. This might all sound like hurricane Fiona might have had a direct hit to my head, scrambling me up. But no, no hurricane to the head, hell, not even wind blowing what's left of my hair out. Just a longing for the freedom I recognize as being LIFE and LIVING FREELY. Thanks for an awesome windy video, look out for flying squirrels as Nova Scotia doesn't have any actual flying squirrels, and they are probably being lobbed at you, not flying to you, because of the hurricane. Keep Safe and Always Inspiring, Matt - Toronto, Canada
