A week after Hurricane Hugo made landfall in the Carolinas, the team at WCNC-TV shared stories from those directly impacted by the storm. In this archived special from 1989, the news team showcases stories that viewers may have missed during the storm because of prolonged power outages.
Hugo was a Category 4 hurricane with wind speeds well over 130 mph when it hit Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Even the western Piedmont and foothills of North Carolina felt Hugo's wrath hours after it made landfall.
Hugo's center passed over I-77 between Columbia and Charlotte around 5 a.m. on Sept. 22, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). It wasn't until Hugo finally crossed I-40 between Hickory and Morganton that it was downgraded to a tropical storm.
If you lived in the Charlotte area in September 1989, chances are you have a Hugo story.

I remember Hugo. People were acting all nice to you in the aftermath, because they were so happy to be alive. That storm was like a day of reckoning.

My grandmother told me about Hugo. We even had the book about it. She told me about how her brother's, along with others on the low country coast, had their homes wiped completely out. They saw trailers moved blocks away from where they were originally. So many poor people lost everything they owned because of this storm.

I was 5 years old and lived in Charleston when Hugo hit, I vividly remember the terror we felt when it came in.

I was 9 years old. We lived in Gastonia about 20-30 minutes outside of Charlotte. It was something I'll never forget. 🌀

I was in Charleston, experiencing the direct hit... scariest moment of my life. Still to this day. I remember the aftermath of people being so nice to you and sharing... and I was thinking it was because we were all happy to be alive. some people may have even gotten right with God during that storm, lol.

Graham was home alone with his 2year old brother and the babysitter. Yeah this is what caught my attention. I was 19 w/my 9 months baby girl. We took shelter at our local high school.

I lived in Charlotte North Carolina I have pictures of the trees down in front of our apartment behind our apartment vehicles crashed inside of vehicles are wet when you open up the doors because the windows were broke I remember power being out stomping in the water as it was coming through the door like it wasn't there. My dad was a plumber and he was working doing a lot of work my grandpa was in the military and he is there with us and he went out and he was helping. I remember my mom and dad getting a birthday cake for my sister hair blowing out the candles as hurricane Hugo came in
