Note! In this video I only talk about the “real” HQ Riders like Rider 13,16, 213,214,216 etc etc. Avoid the 112,115 series as they are of a inferior quality and I have heard a lot of complaints on them.

Tack för en informativ video! Vad anser du om Hqvarna 850-12? Är den också av sämre kvalité? Att föredra framför en Stiga Villa?
@NilsKall

Very informative indeed. I have been offered a husqvarna R213C and your walk through guide is ideal. Iam attracted to the zero turn Husqvarnas because of the design and the ease of access - as well as the general availability of parts. We have a spare ride-on with mulch, as well as side throw and pick-up options. Our plot is not massive at a flat 900sq MTR so the 94cm width cut should be ideal to do the weekly routine mowing....

G’day Nils I recently got gifted a rider 16 with the side discharge deck. Before I picked it up it was completely submerged in flood water. I got the Engine freed up and running and everything seems to be working other than one that of the safety switches (disconnected the earth from the coil). This is a testament to how well built they actually are. Live on a steep property and I very nearly had a catastrophic crash trying to drive it down the driveway which ended up with me crashing through a barbed wire fence. Once these things start jack knifing it gets very precarious. The brakes work but I have found that there is a design flaw in the rider models as there isn’t enough weight over the rear axle for the brakes to function adequately (especially on hills). It seems the struggle for traction also even I slightly uneven ground. I have put some ballast/ water in the rear tyres and I am thinking of adding on a weight at the back tow point. I may even upgrade to grippier tyres. There is a bit of belt slip at the front when cutting longer grass and there is a rattle from the deck sometimes also. Regardless it cuts very evenly and I’ll be very happy if I can sort out the braking and traction issue. Thank you for putting up valuable information I needed about these unique mowers.
@NilsKall
@NilsKall 2 года назад
Hi! That is a cool story indeed! Grip is a bit limited as you say and ballast is needed. I am constructing an adapter for my Rider to use Stiga Wheel weights on it. Those wheel weights are more common and cheaper than the ones for HQ Rider. I think there is a rear weight to put where the tow bar is but I would make something myself instead because they are quite expensive. Regaring tires, snowblower tires have more grip and can be found in 8 inch diameter. I have tried that before and it made a huge difference so I definitely recommend that. I am contemplating getting a tire cutting tool and trim the original tires some for a more aggressive style. If you have a lot of hills I think that a 4wd Rider would be better but they are probably not gifted away so one need a thick wallet for those. Take care and ride carefully! Best regards Nils

@NilsKall 2 года назад
If you go to 7:48 in this video I talk about and try the grippy tires I had on my HQ16 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nP-kkmH7ELk.html
@andyprefenx6778
@andyprefenx6778 2 года назад
Thanks for the reply. I’ll let you know how the weight goes. I have a thick steel I beam that I will adapt to the back I don’t mind if it doesn’t look pretty. I think mine has the K55tuff torq so the eight shouldn’t bother it too much. I changed the oil on it with 40w synthetic engine oil, what do you use in the hydros? I pulled the belt cover up this morning and cleaned out all the sand and mud from the flood and the slipping issue been minimised. Have you had the throttle back off when it’s running I have the 15.5hp Briggs. I am continually having to throttle up because it slips down and losses power. I tried tightening the throttle bolt near the key to no avail. Any ideas? If it cannot get it to brake better down hill I will just use it to mow the flat area around this house as it cuts way nicer than my husqvarna yth2648. Keep up the good work. Could you do a video of the electrical system/ safety switches and testing them to see if they are good.

Hey Nils. your videos inspired me to seek one of these mowers out. and I've gotten myself a great rider 970 with a side discharge. can you advise the best place to purchase parts? i need a throttle cable and key switch and perhaps a decal set like you did in the restoration video. cant seem to find any retailers here in Canada.
@NilsKall
@NilsKall 2 года назад
Hi! Really glad to hear I could inspire you! The side discharge deck is not available here in Sweden as far as I know so you got a special one! Regarding parts it can be a bit tricky, especially since the 970 is quite old by now. I would contact Husqvarna in Canada and see if they can get parts from a European warehouse and if they cant help I would try and find parts that was intended for other brands/models. Key switch should be universal and throttle cable should be rather easy to find for a walk behind lawnmower. Decals are hard here in Sweden too, there are companies that make custom make them but I got original ones intended for a newer rider. Good luck and keep me updated on your progress! www.husqvarna.com/ca-en/

Hi Nils I have an Husqvarna R18 rider articulating mower, I have started to smell a burning rubber odor when operating the machine. I was wondering if you have ever experienced this issue or have any ideas that I could use to remedy the situation. I figure it must be a belt or a pulley causing the problem. Any help or how to videos would be great. Thanks
@NilsKall
@NilsKall 2 года назад
Hi! That doesn’t sound good! The only time I had that problem was when I once forgot to tighten the spring to the intermediate pulley under the machine. This spring connects at your front left wheel, not sure if you have one like that. It happened to me on my Rider 16 with 97 cm rear discharge deck. To identify your problem, have a look at all components and look for rubber residue. If you find that, you can start to diagnose what the problem is. Of course check all pulleys and bearings to make sure they are in good condition. You could run it for a while, turn it off (IMPORTANT!) and check for excessive heat, that could indicate a bad bearing too. Just be careful not to burn yourself, even a good working belt system will get hot when in use. Check that all springs are connected and not broken, that could lead to a slipping belt. Good luck and keep me updated!

Hi Nils, Nice video. My mower is 20 years old as well. It has a Honda engine, GXV620, 20 hp. The bodywork I dont know what make. It has been going without any trouble so far. Only maintenance I have done is oil and air filter changes and blade changes. Once I had the carburettor cleaned out ultrasonically. I allways thought that when it breaks down now that would be the end of it, because of the old age I wouldn't be able to get parts for it anymore. But I see you are busy with it. Are all the parts like for your mower deck still available after 20 years? Thumbnail is nice like this :)
@NilsKall
@NilsKall 2 года назад
Hi, glad to hear your old (newer than this one)is working OK. Honda and 20 hp, sounds lika a premium or pro model, a Countax maybe? On some brands and models there are parts available and especially the ones that are popular and good enough to repair and maintain like the this Husqvarna rider. I have found all the parts I have needed and the spindels and blades was available both as original part or from another manufacturer. I chose the later due to lower cost and the blades I found are “gator” blades unlike the original ones that are just high-lift blades. I will try to make a block-out piece for this cutting deck so I can change from rear-ejection to mulch. But that is a later project. Thanks for giving feedback on the thumbnail, don’t want to over do it but still want it to look a bit proper. Happy Easter! /Nils
