Rookie field assistant in commercial refrigeration here. I changed careers at 36 years old This is legit educational material. I've come to find that whenever you drop a video I'm about to learn something. I really appreciate your effort to put this kind of stuff out here.

I was a patrol cop for 10 years. This last year convinced me it was time to get out. I think this career is where it's at. They are PMing me to death, but I am learning as fast as I can trying to get in to service.

PM's are a great way to learn. You get comfortable seeing a variety of equipment, people, curcumstances, and conditions. If your really wanting to move to service faster, volunteer to go with the service guys km after houer calls and weekend calls. That will strengthen your skills and build the confidence in the service team. It also shows the boss your committed and not afraid of on call.

I had a bad high pressure switch on my heat pump a couple months ago. It wasn't opening, but rather had a resistance that increased when it was running during the day. It would run and cool starting at sunset. Condenser doesn't get a lot of direct sun but does toward sunset. Got misdiagnosed as a bad defrost board by the tech as we both missed that the LED code on the schematic was for the comfort alert while the defrost board code was a tiny label on the opposite corner. The board LED code was for HP lock out. I thought it out, tested the HP switch and found the weird resistance issue. Jumped it out and checked the switch over several hours/days and it never opened when running. Instead it went from 9 ohms in the AM to 26 ohms with in minutes of startup and locked out. Called the HVAC company to recommend the fix was the HP switch and when a different tech came out he brought the board and HP switch, verified what I found and changed the switch. He never found any high pressure refrigerant condition.

About the brazing on pressure switch all the way stuck inside I would normally cut about 3/4 vertically so I Dose not crates almost no restriction. The 3/4 cut will be inside the pipes all clean up of copper files. And the 1/4 extras will be my guide Deep.

So is this the only way to tell if it has a schrader, to call the manufacturer? 5 years into the trade, found two leaks on a head pressure switch this year. Able to remove the first and apply thread sealant. The other was a trane RTU and quickly found out it didn’t have a schrader… thankfully was able to mitigate things but obviously would like that avoid situations like that in the future.

Good video! One question: do the thermo type switches work as good as the pressure switches? Thanks
@love2hvac
@love2hvac Год назад
Different jobs protecting different things. Thermo switch is needed to protect the discharge line thermostat from exceeding 225 and oil breakdown. You can have a hot discharge line without high pressure so a HP switch is also needed. Neither of those protect from Low pressure. So a LP switch protects the compressor too

I wonder if you can elaborate on the tee (or provide a link). Tee female has a depressor and I assume that both males have a schrader valvle. I am finding a few but can't confirm 2 schraders.
@love2hvac

Yes this is correct. Some. Come. With the valve core and some some do not, however, in my personal experience they have all been threaded to accept one. Tru tech tools has some

Is that restricted could change the state of refrigerant from vapor to a liquid? Thanks Ty.
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 3 года назад
If it was on the liquid line it could A: work as a metering device and you would feel the temperature difference. B It would also cause the pressure before it to be very high and the pressure after it to be too low.

I really want to know how to correctly drill a hole into a new pipe for brazing in a pressure switch. Can you use a regular drill? Any videos showing such a procedure?
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 2 года назад
I like to use my torch and melt a hole in it. If I use a drill bit I like to put nitrogen pressure behind it so the shaving are pushed out of the pipe as I'm drilling. Shaving from the drill can cause problems in the unit. I will be doing a brazing class eventually but I'm not close to that yet.

Another lesson learned. Thank you👍. Q- If you check the electrical state ( open/closed) of the pressure switch with the system off (equalized), is it safe to say that is what the “at rest” position is supposed to be in ??
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 3 года назад
Residential safeties Normally Closed. High side opens on pressure rise Aka closes on pressure drop. Low side opens on pressure drop Aka closes on pressure rise. Now commercial is a different set of rules especially with automatic pump down.

I know people hate them but would a bullet piercing valve work to put high pressure valve on in a sealed system?
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 11 месяцев назад
No, those are for temporary use such as recovery of a system with no ports. They will absolutely leak.
@rickregister9424
@rickregister9424 11 месяцев назад
@@love2hvac but for temporary until I can afford to fix it correctly?
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 11 месяцев назад
It seems like you have made up your mind and are looking for validation. Just go for it. Worst thing is it will leak refrigerant out and burn up the compressor. Best case it leaks slowly enough to keep recharging it and the HP switch saves the unit from a dirty condensor or a failed fan motor.
@rickregister9424
@rickregister9424 11 месяцев назад
@love2hvac not looking for validation at all. I'm fighting cancer living in my RV and the heat is making me sick. If I can make something work to finish out the summer I can have it done right before next summer. I would have to put something like that in to evacuate the system then braze in an actual service port and a Schrader valve for a replaceable high pressure switch
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 11 месяцев назад
Then leave it like it is! There is no reason to risk the integrity of the system to add an optional protection device (hp switch) at the risk if a part known to 100% cause much bigger and costly problems . Leave the system like it is and run it. Piercing valves are NOT to be left in the system under any circumstances. They are a temporary tool used to recover refrigerant. These will absolutely leak Refregerant out causing much bigger problems and there is absolutely no circumstance for them to be left in place in an operating system. However it's a free world and you are welcome to damage your equipment however you choose.

manufactures who don't design their systems with pressure switches that screw onto schrader valves SUCK! plain and simple. i just spent $600 to have a low pressure switch replaced on my 2.5 year old amana ASX16042 ac unit. the tech installed a new nipple with a schrader valve. pisses me off that all AC manufactures don't install schrader valves.
