Why does an AC freeze, I have broken this down into 4 categories that's easier to remember
#1 most likely cause is AIRFLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! not enough AIR FLOW! AIRFLOW IS IMPORTANT!!!
This can be Dirty Evaporator coil, dirty filter, restrictive or undersized filter, dirty blower wheel, blower motor on the wrong speed, bad blower motor, blower capacitor, bad blower relay or motor wiring.
It can be ductwork such as return air blocked, return air crushed or undersized. It can also be supply duct crushed undersized, dampers closed, or grill registers closed. Insulation blocking the ducts or blower or anything else you can think of to not allow enough airflow across the evaporator coil.
1A Stuck contactor falls under this as the contactor sticks and keep the unit running when the airflow stops.
#2 Mechanical restriction. clogged filter drier, kink, valve partially closed, clogged screen, undersized metering device a TXV stuck closed and more.
#3 Temperature to low, Indoor temperature is to low (low load) or the outdoor temperature is too low
#4 least likely is Low on refrigerant. This will cause frost at the metering device but it also reduces capacity. it is possible but it take a long time at the right humidity conditions. However it is misdiagnosed as the main cause because adding refrigerant causes the pressures to go up and out of the freezing range. without solving the root cause adding charge just floods the evaporator and gets more liquid to the compressor.
Bryan Orr has a great article with the same topic with a different view point that may help

So the key cause is the pressure drop. Thank you, Ty. I watch your videos daily and learn new things.

My boss would say when it gets to 65 outside turn off the air because the coil is going to freeze. I always thought that he was lying and he just did not want to spend the money cooling the business. Years later I learned why the coils would freeze. And you here are re-affirming that. Nice video. Thank you.

Your videos are a combination of all the best seminars or sit in classes, HVAC School’s and factory training all put into one. I wonder how many old-timers are watching your videos with 20 or 30 years experience but are embarrassed or ashamed they would not admit that they are watching HVAC 101 and learning something new for the first time. Keep up the fantastic work

You mentioned someone adding refrigerant every year.... in my small town their is a shady service company. They replace my furnace, and put in a weird filter size that isn't in big box stores, only them and Amazon has that size. They also take care of my friend's ac unit. Every year it keeps tripping the breaker. "Shady inc" says they were just low on refrigerant and add more. This year they switched from central air to several window ACs. I think they said the compressor died, but now I have to check. System was 20 years old though. "Oh no your old system died, let me replace that with a new system."

Some sleazy companies put there for sure. Many cities have filter manufacturing companies that can make any size filter by the box for really cheap.

When people ask me why an ac freezes I say there is only 1 reason an ac freezes, the coil temperature drops below freezing. The number 1 reason for that is usually air flow. But it's the temperature of the coil being below freezing is why it freezes.

Nice presentation you should also have mentioned them one inch pleated filters are too restrictive, I recommend a set up with a commercial four inch thick pleated filter to my customers, otherwise I tell them to use cheap filters and plan on having the evaporator checked periodically and cleaned if necessary. Believe it or not however, I have found the cheap filters if changed regularly do a pretty good job of keeping the coils clean. And I may be mistaken but I noticed that dirty filter you displayed looks like it was installed backwards, it would be worth mentioning that cross hatch cardboard pattern across one side of the filters face goes downstream of air flow and is meant to support a neglected dirty filter and keep it from getting sucked into the blower, and I have seen this happen.
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 2 года назад
Filtration will be on it's own video. After I get to static pressure air flow and testing.
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 2 года назад
Not all one inch filters are too restrictive. A lot goes into that and it will be covered before long. A restrictive filter will wear on a unit but also filter that lets the dirt past will have worse effects including ductwork contamination. The 2" filter was the right way, cross hatch cardboard was on both sides. The metal is on the back side that holds the media from pulling in when it gets dirty like that. Not my house I assure you. And I do love large filters but they are still not a clear cut answer.

How hot can/should the compressor discharge line (entering coil) be over ambient using approach method? I'm assuming this is the highest temperature of the entire system. You mentioned Las Vegas so when it's 110 degrees outside how high will you see? What might cause this to be too high. Could low refrigerant or air in the system inflate the temperature?

So a question I have, which might sound dumb but I can’t find any good answers online so far. I’ve gotten my Fieldpiece probes. And I’ve hooked them up on my system a few times. But I’m going to check my friends new houses AC, and I didn’t know, is it better to hook up probes/gauges when the system is off and equalized, or is it fine to hook them up while it’s running.
@love2hvac
@love2hvac 2 года назад
I like to turn the power the probes and the app without them hooked up. GENERALLY speaking. If the unit is off I check everything I can while it's off. If the unit is running I check everything I can while it's running. So it really dosent matter. If you want to be super safety you could hook the high side up off and the low side while on for the least amount of pressure when attaching.

What is good filter can use it to protect the system? Is possible to use double filter? In charging refrigerant why not charge with vapor? If does what’s can happen? Thanks Mr. Ty.❄️💐

Great questions really greqt. Those will all be answered soon as the course progresses. There is not one size fits all and we must understand airflow before we can appreciate filters. So much more than people realize.

Is the refrigerant inside that freezes or the moist in air condensing on evaporator coil and freezes. Please someone answer me which one?
@love2hvac

Moist air in the coil that freezes. Refrigerant 410a would have to be -247F to freeze at 0psig and R22 -142F

@love2hvac

@@verminer7 It's the moisture in the air moving across the evaporator coil. It's the same condensation moisture going out the drain line. There should never be moisture inside the refrigeration system.
