That’s crazy how it was malfunctioning while you were filming, definitely proves your point.

Haha yea pretty much perfect timing to get an accurate example

@@HVACToolReview I have noticed that it will go off near pipe dope when checking for gas leaks. I stick with the tried and true soap bubbles.

Never tried the Bacharach nor know anyone that has this model since they are still pretty new to the field but Bacharach definitely makes some neat devices. Per contract every season we would do a combustion analysis on some of the boilers at a client and the bacharach analyzer is what we used. It's an interesting tool that prints out all the data for the client to receive and all that state regulation stuff. It aint cheap either but honestly in the refrigerant leak searching field I think Inficon is winning the game. They've been at it for years before other brands came up.

Yea Bacharach has a few different refer leak testers, this one just isn’t great. The h-10 by Bacharach is probably one of the better refrigerant detectors available. I have also used their combustion analyzer and didn’t have any problems, been using an ecom as of lately. I agree inficon is my go too for electronic leak detection.

I use the inficon D-tek as well. Seems to work great when I have trouble with other options. It does seem to go off if the evap is damp. Something about water near the tip of the device sets it off only a low reading but has sent me in the wrong direction. Don’t have many complaints with it though. Has found leaks for me many times. I’m surprised for a Bacharach brand device the one you have there has so many issues. Great content man. Just subbed to your channel. Keep it up man!

Thanks man! Yea we have switched to the info on D-tek and the ultra sonic. Too many of these have had issues for us. not sure what the deal is, since like you said, bacharach is normally good to go. Thanks for checking out the video and supporting the channel, really appreciate it!

HVAC Tool Review I watched your ultrasonic video last night. That thing is awesome. I didn’t know how I felt about it till I saw the video. Which one do you see yourself using more to find a leak? The electronic or ultrasonic?
@HVACToolReview

Frank Rizzo Frank Rizzo I personally prefer the ultrasonic and that's my go to for most leaks, I can't think of many times that I've had to go back with an electronic. Some places are just too noise polluted. But there are also guys at my shop that swear they have zero luck with ultrasonic and use the D-tek exclusively. Maybe the’ve got bad hearing, I'm not sure, always works for me. 😂

That’s normal for electronic leak detectors. You bump them, they go off, you blow into the end, they go off. Repeatable detection is the trick. It is a technique you must learn. Also, these detectors are good at finding the leak but bubble solution pin-points it.

It’s definitely a technique/art I just don’t find the Bacharach reliable. Much prefer the inficon or ultrasonic for hard to find leaks

Never had one of those but Bacharach makes some of the best leak detection tools. There are two types of electronic detectors. Heated diode and Inferred. Both are good and the brand name means something don’t go cheap. I had an infricon inferred and a H-10 heated diode. The H-10 was my favorite but the sensor has to be replaced regularly. I changed my leak detection now I have a Fieldpiece inferred and an inficon ultrasonic. I’ll also get a heated diode detector at some point just haven’t decided yet. I always incorporate three different methods of leak detection plus nitro and soap bubbles. Realistically there is no one size fits all leak detector for every situation plus you need back ups for malfunctions, break downs, and verification.

I agree 💯. Just have never had good luck with this one and quite a few other guys I work with have had the same experiences. Good to incorporate multiple methods. I like to use my inficon during maintenances time check suspect areas, but it’s hard to beat good ole nitrogen and soap bubbles.

That’s awesome that yours works great, but we have about 70 of these units, and have had way too many that act just like this one.

We’ve gotten rid of most of them and switched to inficon, but might have a few left if you are serious.

Exactly my experience. For combustible gas, natural or propane works great. For refrigerant forget it.

Columbus City Schools here. We needed a gas sniffer. We bought 10 at almost $700 each. Not reliable at all. Everything makes it go haywire. A warm van or a warm room makes it go off. The Leakator 10 was our old units and was awesome. Do not buy the Informant 2.

Did you try farting in front of it to test the methane sensitivity? Lol

I’ve had great luck with the Informant 2, I baby it because it is expensive. Definitely not good for out doors for sure. I do my best to equalize the system by powering up all solenoids and turn off all fans near by. I will agree that the LED’s take a little time to get used too. If anyone is looking for the cheapest, and in my opinion the best for the price leak detector is the REFCO leak detector. It’s taking a beating and still works amazing.
