I'm HVAC tech with 25 years experience, the double up dryers one should be removed. It really taxes the compressor just like a kinked line with the extra restrictions of the second dryer. It can cause the liquid to start to flash to gas just like a metering device and not feed the txv with a solid collum if liquid causing all kinds of problems. IMHO I would remove the one inside the unit, that way if you have to change the dryer you can just pump down the unit instead of having to recover it. I know you like to install them in factory location but that why I always relocate them, it's a time and labor saver in the future. Hope this helps you out. You do a great job I don't want you to think I'm criticizing you about dryer location just trying to help you out. Love your content

If only I wasn't stuck in a meeting.. I cannot wait to watch. Usually HVAC as you know is easy... It's does it cycle on running both indoor and outdoor fans and the compressor then whether or not all the refrigerant leaked out. It's a mess fixing a leak though ripping out an EVAP coil on their third floor...it seems they never pump down especially the rotary compressor units which run on a prayer and a hard start just to get them in the mood to run.

Look on the back of that electrical panel on the condenser. It'll tell you the design subcool/temperature charge correlation with ambient and indoor temperatures. Normally Apt ac's are oversized anyways so doesn't have to be perfect unless you're working on 3rd floor end unit. Unit with a high load that is.

If your line set goes underground your superheat may be high if you check it outside. Have you checked your true superheat upstairs at the air handler?
@LexVance
@LexVance 2 года назад
No, I'll start doing that as the line set does go underground. Great idea Carlos! Thank you!
@ryanroberts8135
@ryanroberts8135 Год назад
True your SH should depend on length of line set as well as if coils are clean, I would never dump extra refrigerant in without making sure you got proper air flow. Think about it, what is more likely event to cause coils to ice up ? A leak in a sealed unit which is not subject to wear on lines since they stationary ? Or coils getting dirty over time which increases the pressures since they raising temperature from restricted air flow ? In my 10-12 years experience I have solved the problem by cleaning coils 60% of time, the othe 40% is refrigerant leaks either shoddy installs or units 15-20 years old.

Another great video Lex, thanks you! My 2 main thoughts after watching this video are this: A: The fact that those units come from the factory with a hard start kit to me is a big red flag of poor engineering. I took hvac courses back in the early 2000’s and I don’t ever remember a situation with a hard start kit being installed at the factory, seemed like it was always an option to be installed in the field after if a compressor for being troublesome and popping breakers B: Correct me if I’m wrong but with all the problems you are seeing on those units, how much research did the apartment complex honestly do before deciding to install those over the entire property when it was built? So sad that we are in the day and age where the lowest bidder is always what wins. Anyways, just a few thoughts I had, keep up the great vids!

Your saying you can never get the superheat below 20? Even by adding charge? Either semi stop up txv, undersize TXVs or sometimes there's strainers b4 the TxV those could be plugged due to being a appartment complex installs go really fast and not much care goes into it, thoes be my guesses
@LexVance
@LexVance 2 года назад
I can try to add a little more refrigerant and see. I've never tried that. The subcool would be closer to 20 though. That don't seem right either. Thank you so much for watching Edward!
@edwardgarza5104
@edwardgarza5104 2 года назад
@@LexVance yes your right the subcool would increase. As long as superheat is around 5-20 with a txv and your close to your subcooling I say your good. But yeah a 28 superheat with the subcool spoton , indicates a restriction. Filter dryer ,txv , strainer ECT could be the issue. Check to see if you have more than 3 degrees across filter dryer that would indicate restrictive dryer
@LexVance

@dalitohana6979
@dalitohana6979 2 года назад
@@edwardgarza5104 I just wonder if all the factory installed filter dryers are restricted or semirestricted seems like problems started like 2-3 years into them being in operation. I think I would remove the factory installed filter dryer the contractor left in the unit and replace the one the contractor put outside and see what your superheat is then. Maybe bad dryers are causing the evap coils to go bad prematurely. Just thinking out loud. You could also check the temp difference on both the factory installed filter dryer and the filter dryer the contractor installed that would be interesting.
@ryanroberts8135
@ryanroberts8135 Год назад
True not just bad apartment installations but how many apts do techs clean BOTH coils ? Most techs rather clean outdoor coils and give extra shot of refrigerant. Granted in some apt setups it’s harder to get to indoor coils unless there is mechanical closet but restriction that close to TXV could be your issue.

@LexVance

Yes, however getting them to match isn't always easy. Just try and get them close. Some equipment in the real world just can't do it. The instructors equipment in a class room can do it easily. But, come out in the real world where things are mix matched and not installed correctly and see if an instructor can do that. I highly doubt it. Thank you so much for watching!

I've been repairing electrical/electronics for over 40 years. I Now teach AIRC technology. Looks like you have some skills! The only thing I would recommend is for you to reference the installation and parts manual as opposed to using the procedures used in the past. The industry is changing fast! The capacitor that was changed out (30/5mfd), may have been the correct cap for the rotary compressor. The only way to know for sure is to reference the parts manual instead of : "all rotary compressors comes with a 45 mfd"! That's just not true! It's possible this one did; however, you don't want to be the goofball replacing a cap with the wrong value. The only way to know for sure is by referring the parts manual with the model number of the unit. Also, you don't mention what subcooling the unit calls for. If it called for 8 +/-1, the unit was overcharged because it was running at 12 degrees subcooling. It was 3 degrees off. This information you will find in the installation manual, service manual, or data plate. This is why its very important to reference the manuals. You may have been stressing the super heat when all along there was nothing wrong with it. Old Industry standards are changing! Read the manuals! Don't assume all units and/or brands work the same. Once you have read the manuals x many times, you won't need them anymore. Good luck!

Instead of replacing the coil. Why not just replace the air handler it’s a hell of lot cheaper then a coil

I just replaced a titan pro that went from 45uf to 20uf in les than 2years. They are made in China. The titan hd is made in America . I went to buy an MARS made in American and it’s assembled in Mexico. Went to another supply house and the MARS same part number as the other one Is made in American . MARS ADVERTISES “Made in American”. So, is assembled a legal play on words! “
