I love this guys voice..... and his looks! Wow. stunning.. Everthing is about right.. This is a very difficult aria.. the fact that he does not put an A natural at the end.. is really not to be held against.. him.. He is singing the score!
I've seen DH in Rigoletto and Simon Boccanegra, and in concert. He is a superb baritone; others may be as good, but no current baritone is better. Solid technique - great Verdian line - and expressive. We are fortunate to have this artist appearing so widely in the states..
DIVINE RUSSIAN VOICE !!! ENDLESS BRAVO Dear Dmitry Hvorostovsky !!! DIVINE MUSICIANS !!! ENDLESS BRAVO !!! DIVINE Maestro !!! ENDLESS BRAVO !!! GOD BLESS You !!! GOD BLESS The Your FANTASTIC TALENTS !!! Always with a lot of love and light Your eternal fan Nadya Mirkova and all my big family, and all my friends from Sofia - Bulgaria - Russia - Europe and all World !!!
this is the great human honesty in declaration, the honesty is the most important quality human qualityn and in this is presenting itself and the following scene must understand
He sings this in a very lyrical fashion that I've not heard from a lot of the old singers, it makes him unique in my eyes. Definitely not worse. Please leave great singers of the past in the past, right now we have this man and men like him, and we should cherish them while we still do.
Yes, Giga, this clip brings thoughts of eternity, particularly when H. sings: ...della virtù com'aquila sui vanni m'alzerò, ah! e vincitor de' secoli il nome mio farò.” (Like an eagle I will raise myself on the wings of my virtù, ah! and I will make my name as the conqueror of centuries.) The lyrics here may be about Charles V’s political conquest of world-wide kingdoms but they bring to mind H’s artistic conquest of world-wide audiences. Maestro, R.I.P.
Verdi wrote 27 operas in his lifetime. "Ernani",opera in 4 acts, based on Victor Hugo's drama "Hernani" was written in 1844. It was a lesser known opera. But this aria of King of Castile from "Ernani" is one of my favoured, as sung by Dmitri Hvorostovsky. When Dmitri magnificent voice reverberates on stage, I can hear a voice of eternity.
Yes, many times, actually. On Heroes and Villains, there are several of them. After all, you can hear it in Valentin's aria at this very concert. More than that, I have a recording where he sings a Bb.
:-) Please remember it's not just about the high notes. I think he just owns Di provenza il mar, Rodrigo's death or Il Balen del suo sorriso, not to mention the Russian repertoire. Please check some of these out, too. My fav Barbiere: watch?v=KE9OWvBRyQ4
Yo! Excellent! This is a fantastic aria, but quite evil to sing as that cello accompaniment is tenuous to say the least, and keeping pitch and timing must be extremely challenging especially in a big house. The Met Live version demonstrates that, as the stage and theatre are so cavernous he is having to watch the conductor like a hawk, and you can hardly hear the thready cello accompaniment. Here he is at his best.
@Baritenore those were all voices with a good deal more weight.. and heft.( and I like that too). .. Dimitri hasa medium weight voice.. and as such is quite flexible and lyrical.. In other words.. while I admire the singers you mention... greatly.. I also like this dude... I see them as different.. not necessarily better/worse.
Really? He's pretty secure up there. He is even heard in some of those "cage matches" on RU-vid. If you don't have any of his operatic CDs (too baaaad! :-) ), try here on YT Figaro's & Valentine's arias, Il Prologo from I Pagliacci, I believe.... I can't remember all the performances where he sings a high A, can anybody help?
Great voice, but he gets a little too cute on things the way I hear that Fischer-Deskau did in his last years. Overall really fine, but a tendency to be too affected--portamentos where traditional they would not be placed. I don't mind the lack of the high A. I've heard it both ways and while it is impressive for baritones to hit it, this is one number that sounds better dramatically without it. As opposed to the end of Rigoletto where McNeill tossed it in and it was dynamite.
Maybe it' s just me, but we had Milnes who pretty much imitated Warren. & Now here we have Hvorostovsky imitating Bastianini:( Not a bad imitation @all. He really should sing the way he did when he won Cardiff's Singer of the world contest back in 89! There he sings much more open. It's got nothing 2 do w/him being older. Watch Bastianini's "live" performances her on RU-vid & U'll C it's very similar 2 how Dmitri is singing. He's definitely channeling the man. 4 that, great job Dmitri:)
To me a great singer, the looks and the voice! But seriously Dmitri is a absolutely amazing. I can % Kauffman, what a tender voice. Love them both. If I had the money, it attend every
Agree! Dima was imitating Bastianini, but when Bastianini use his own voice, because his bass backgroud, Dima had to darken, and overdone his Tenor like voice to get something like result
I don't find his dark colour appealing in Rossini, either, when listening to him *after* a "regular" baritone. I love his Verdi, he was not a bad Don Giovanni, and I love his arie antiche. You asked for a high A... ;-)
Ottima tecnica, suoni appoggiati.
It's not just about the high notes, true, but aside from that I don't find the basic coloring of his voice to be too appealing. After listening to Macneil sing this beautifully and cap it with a booming A natural this is a wee bit disappointing ;-D He's a good actor and of course, good at Russian.
He had to have been mic'd when you saw him. Don't be stupid. Listen to the two youtube clips I said to listen to. There is NO ARGUMENT that there is a difference. And his voice is like the Traviata clip. I saw him MORE than twice and at the Met. Don't comment on things you know nothing about. Your need to believe that he sounds great doesn't change reality.
No, you don't *know* for a fact that he isn't being mic'd. And I wrote that he is being enhanced. And opera houses have admitted to it. Look up the article in the NY Times where they discuss it and admit it. I have heard him also. This is not some unknown thing. Maybe you are unaware of it, but it has been written about and documented. You just have to bother to look it up. I also have posted a video on my channel where the audience erupts in screams because they hear mics. You are in denial.
That's funny because I heard him live also many times. At the Met etc. And his voice was ALWAYS very small and hooty. Perhaps you are hearing him enhanced as many of the houses are doing now. And they admit they are doing it. I know many who heard him early on as well and said it was puny in small recital halls. I am sorry, but the audiences are being duped, and your comments are proof of that.
You and your obsessive fantasy about miking. I've heard him live enough times-his voice is not "puny and hooty" He is an elegant, stylish singer, with great breath control-but the truth is, it is not a large voice-but outside of the Met I'd imagine amplitude would be less of an issue. If we are comparing it to the great Verdi baritones of the past he comes up short. The voice really can't soar, and the top doesn't have a real ping. Given the inelegant bellowers around to day-his fame makes sense
I'm still waiting for your NYT article citation-or any of the many reliable sources you claim exist Strange silence on your end-but I suppose you'll continue your unproved nonsense elsewhere I wonder why I never thought of my great point before-if what you say is true and universal why do so many voices sound so meager when you hear them live-volume wouldn't be a problem according to you really pulled the rug out from your contention
I KNOW he was not being miked-I described his voice honestly. I know when you can you ban people who disagree with you-but provide -prova-instead of coming across like an internet maniac-put together with irrefutable evidence a real investigative piece-if done properly a real publication would love it-otherwise you're tiresome My other point would be-if what you say is universally true-and we're all duped why are the voices so small and inadequate??? size shouldn't be an isssue then-and it is
This is enhanced. He sounds NOTHING like this in person. The voice is puny and hooty. No squillante. Listen to the 2012 Met recording of Traviata with Dessay. That is what he sounds like, not this mic'd and enhanced crap.
Look it up yourself. lol It was in 2006. People like you won't listen anyway. It is pointless to engage you in anything. You have a need to believe in something and nothing will change that.
