In this episode we visit the Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. The visit to Hwange was emotionally complex. On the one hand we had amazing sightings and experiences, but on the other hand we came facto face with the realities of local elephant overpopulation, where elephants have devastated the environment to such and extent that for kilometres on end there were no trees higher than a shrub.
By the end of the dry season the park could simply not sustain the number of elephants and they were dying. Other wildlife is also impacted. Because elephants tend to monopolise waterholes other animals are often forced to use muddy areas where they get stuck - as we witnessed. One cannot help but wonder whether culling of elephants should not be reintroduced as a more humane option to manage their numbers and avert a disaster.
Highlights of the trip was seeing new-born elephant calves, lions virtually every day and lots of antelope like Sable and Roan that are relatively scarce in South Africa.
As usual we also discuss the campsites we used.

It's sad to see the elephants dying.....Hope that the one's making the decisions realize the horrible death of hunger and change the emotional decision to a practical one....

Yes, indeed. It seems that Botswana has resumed limited hunting outside reserves.

I've heard that in the dry season, many Hwange elephants migrate north to the Zambezi/Vic Falls area, and return to Hwange after the rains.

The thing is that we were there in November, right at the end of the dry season and encountered thousands of elephants in Hwange. I think we saw more elephants than any other single species!

Well done, thank you for sharing. I was in Hwange in Aug 2019. Did not see as many elephant just the result of their destruction on the veld and environment. As much as I love Elephants i agree that the population needs to be lowered 😢

@@overlandersa How do I connect for more information. I am planning a similar trip in the coming year.

@@tabishshaikh6402 I don't actually know how to achieve that, as I think neither of us wants to reveal our email addresses in a RU-vid comment. What I would suggest is taking a look at the Tracks4Africa forum, as this is a valuable source of information for overlanders. If you join the forum you can also ask questions.
