This video is out dated. Ignore the computer and firmware parts of the video. I dropped HxC firmware for FlashFloppy, and I don't keep up with Hardware synths anymore.... So FlashFloppy might not be relevant, I am not sure.
Wow, this issue is what I have really expected for so long time...! I admire your restoration techs of TS to make them work good even today in 2020! Thanks Hank!
In Uzbekistan, ensoniq TS 10 is really popular and trendy, because of the professionally made program with realistic instrument sounds and the perfect sounding in big spaces.
My ASR-10 was the Fairlight CMI I always wanted, but better. I remember having to send samples via Appletalk to the ASR thru Propellerheads' Recycle. Painfully slow but worth it. Great video, thanks!
@@HankCoffey I downloaded that program HxCFloppyEmulator (plus like 6gb of sounds) and now the fun task of tuning them into useful files. Your videos have been very helpful. Thanks again!
I actually switched to FlashFloppy firmware on my Goteks. You can just load the IMG files. They don't have to be in HFE format. I never did a update video on the change.
Man, I was fighting to get this very same driver to work on kurzweil k2500 and watching this video I noticed that the jumper was in the wrong place and....bazinga. Thanks mate.
Thank you for the video Hank, this makes we want to upgrade my TS-12 sample memory and dig out all my old floppy disks! Would you be able to provide a link to where I could buy the floppy emulator you installed? I’m in the US but I can’t seem to find the same black model, and want to get the right one. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Dave, I don't want to put external links on RU-vid, the "algorithm" doesn't like it. Go to Reverb and search for HxC usb. There is a guy named Shea Alterio (Night Crew) that sells them. He is in Cambridge, Mass. Tell him you want black. His disk images on the USB aren't worth a crap. You will want to make your own files for it to work right. I am uploading a VFX video next Friday... Watch that video! These Ensoniqs are real picky about what they will read. The VFX video next Friday will save you a lot of headaches. I don't have it edited yet. These drives are a real headache until you learn exactly how to do the files. Ensoniqs hate reading these. It's gotta be Just Right.
Just found your channel, great stuff. I have a Ensoniq sd-1 and bought a gotek from ebay a few years ago but never got it to work on my keyboard. Did you buy an ADAPTED gotek drive or is it just a standard factory one. ? I`m from the u.k. Also did you have to format the usb stick differently to fat32 or something else? Thanks for your great videos.
Hey Brian. I have a VFX SD that I am installing a HxC in soon. That is basically a 1989 SD-1. On my Mac, I format the thumb drives to FAT32 (master boot). You can't manually put SD readable files on the HxC with any computer. The only way this drive works with the SD -1 is for storage only. The thumb drive has to have blank hfe images in it. The SD-1 will see these images as a blank inserted floppy. If you want downloaded sounds on this drive (sysex). You will have to dump the sysex onto the SD 1 through midi cables. And then save the banks to the virtual blank floppies on the HxC.
@@HankCoffey Thanks for that info, yes I manages to SYSEX a set of sequenced files from SD-1 to PC and then back which was brilliant, I have a lot of old Floppys with sequenced files I did but it sometimes crashes the SD-1 as they wont read properly with the keyboard floppy drive, I wanted to convert the disks onto a pc with a computer floppy drive and put on thumb drive so sd-1 will read them without crashing. Hope this makes some sense. :)
I think everything saved on the USB drive has to be by the VFX... I don't think it will read anything else. You'll have to load your sequences into the VFX by midi cables... then save to a hfe blank on the USB drive. I will be doing a VFX USB video in a few weeks. I'll check it out.
Thanks for that great tutorial!!! One thing I would like to know: is the drive read only for the TS-12 or is there also the possibilty to save sounds, sequence data, ... with it?
Thanks for posting this video. It really helped out with my issues with the gotek emulator . I did know what software to use . I still have issues with an old floppy drive that the Mac don't want to install the driver to . in order to get to files out of there floppy disk into my computer I probably just need an old computer depicts floppy disk . Perhaps you like some music it's data from Star trek.
No problem Gabriel. A old PC is best to do all of this stuff with. I can't do much on my Mac. There are apps to do everything with these files, but they are for PC.
Nice video! I wonder, what's the benefit to convert the IMG files to HFE ? I use the exact same Gotek with this HxC firmware on my TS12 and Gem S3 since years but i don't even remember to have started this software once 😅.
There is no advantage. It's better to leave them IMG. HxC used to not read IMG, only HFE. At the time of this video, I wasn't aware they could read IMG. I guess since 2017 HxC can read IMG.
A PC with a internal floppy should read them. You have to use software like Ensoniq Disk Tools or Omnifloppy... Read the disk to IMG file... Flashfoppy Goteks will read the IMG.... HxC firmware Goteks need the IMG conververted to a .HFE file. Google "read Ensoniq disks to IMG". I don't mess with this stuff much. I'm a guitarist.
@@JeffHxC2001 the HxC Goteks I purchased in early 2020 didn't support IMG. I don't mess with my hardware much anymore. So I don't pay attention to what is going on now.
They have to be flashed with firmware. Usually sellers do this already. They either use FlashFloppy or HxC Floppy Emulator. Both function about the same. I like FlashFloppy a little better. Unless a listing says it's flashed, might be safe to expect it isn't.
I don't think a TS will save samples. I think it only loads and plays them. I recommend asking on the Ensoniq Facebook groups. There is a TS group. They should be able to answer your questions.
I am looking at some of these emulators. There seem to be s lot of models out there. Some say they are for Ensoniq, Somme do not. Are they different, does it matter? I just got a TS12 and they had a bunch of floppy’s included (not factory). I tried loading something and it said discs not formatted. I tried to format one of them and it displayed the same message, so, I am not sure if it is working or not.
It might be a issue with the floppy drive. Ensoniq is real picky on what it will read also. It's a real headache getting them setup. The TS-12 Gotek should be the same as most of the others. The seller is using brand names to advertise. And sending out the same drive. All of my keyboards have the same Gotek in them.
meu amigo seu conteúdo é incrivel, abraçcos do brasil! eu gostaria de saber a especificação deste flop drive emulator, porque existem varios modelos diferentes no mercado.
Obrigado meu amigo! Este vídeo tem alguns anos. Substituí o meu por uma versão de tela maior. Você pode comprar ambas as versões no samplerzone.com Tell them Hank sent you. lol.
Help TS-10 question. I installed the USB Floppy Drive. I made an HFE file in the USB and opened it, but there is no response. I can't recognize it, is there any way?? What did I miss in the middle?? Windows 7 Help....
@@Live-br8sj the hfe has to be Ensoniq EPS format. The TS will not read a dos or fat floppy. By default, the software is set to make a standard format floppy. You have to select Ensoniq EPS from a menu box. And then create that image. It is possible you have a flashfloppy Gotek and not HxC. Flashfloppy is different. I hardly ever mess with my keyboards. I would have to get familiar with the software again to give specifics. I should show in this video how to select Ensoniq EPS format.
@@Live-br8sj right around 8 mins in this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OCCJHap2wR4.html you have to make Ensoniq EPS DD format.
USB storage is a problem. I'm trying to format in ts-10 but it's not recognized. The error message is not formatted The computer works well, but the ts-10 can't because of the USB recognition problem. I think it will be solved just by recognizing the usb disk. I would appreciate it if you could tell me the name of the program.
Man, I haven't messed with my hardware in a few years. I think I upgraded this drive to one with a even bigger screen... I had to find it on eBay man. They were kinda hard to get. I haven't checked lately.
Yes. Same as a real floppy. The TS series doesn't save sample data. So it's read only on ASR/EPS sounds. TS saves user patches, sequences, and system data.
@@RicardoRodriguez-fq5vs Yeah. Ensoniq boards are a pain to setup. I recommend joining the Ensoniq Facebook groups. There are a few people in those that can answer all of your questions.
@@babaloo21 There is old software that can do this. I think it requires an old PC with a floppy drive. I use Macs, so I do not know how to work with the physical floppies. I got the IMG files online.
@@HankCoffey Ok, i don't know if these old floopys are formatted on ms-dos.. if not, windows will not detect data, maybe Mac will detect, i must try, thank you 🙏
@Cesar Silva Ensoniq used it own format. It can not be read by a computer. Unless, you get a old software called Giebler or something like that. There are a few others that can do it. You should be able to Google everything you need to know. There are message threads on the topic.
This video is out dated. I switched to FlashFloppy Firmware, I found it better than HxC. I actually never play my hardware synths much anymore. I leave this video up because it gets views. Non of this stuff is Mac only.
