Fortunately I updated the firmware first thing as it wiped everything, even the Bluetooth pairing of the remote. Eventually found that you should go to the settings and activate Bluetooth pairing. And while that's open, press left and right together on the remote until the red light blinks (and the remote is listed as paired device)
