I can remember when the Polaris Room was pretty much the highest point in Atlanta. The Atlanta Gas Light Tower next door part of Peachtree Center might have been at the time the only other building nearby that was taller.
When this hotel had its grand opening, every politician in the state wanted to be a part of it. At the time, you could eat your meal in the Polaris restaurant and look down on all of Atlanta.
@@proudoyster778 Is it still rotating? Used to make a revolution every 30 minutes at lunchtime, one hour after 4pm .Really. Also, as it was moving, you could see the gearing, along the inner section of the mechanism. Never seemed like the safest creation, but it worked.
@@proudoyster778 The restaurant, originally, had two speeds. During lunch hours, it took 30 mins to make a rotation, an hour at night. Also, the gears were visible around the edge of the walkway and kind of scary back then.
