I am glad i watched your video. I never knew there was a D extinguisher. It is good to know that the A, B.C will have little effect. There is a lot to learn about these cars. I am surprised they are not requiring FR rated clothing in case of ARCH flash. Then a hard hat that is rated for the voltages. I have experienced small arch flashes in my career. Knowing what I know those gloves would never come off while working on cars or using the meters. The 1570 is putting out the high voltage needed. It is easy to become complacent with these safety devices. It is hard to teach someone about something you can't see but will kill with no discrepancy. I think the safety industry has a lot to catch up on. Along with fire codes to protect people in buildings and parking areas. I keep finding more information that should be public common knowledge. I think we will see many more fires until more regulations are put in place. My experience with batteries and fires is it happens very quick and very hot. I do not get involved with the batteries that are in the cars. Sounds like they need to be handled with a lot of care. I just hope we don t see repair shops catching fire. Our local city had some buses catch fire one night. I am wondering if in later years the cars will have a fire suppression system on them. At least a way to disconnect the batteries in a fire or in a crash. Then would that be enough if they are letting the vehicles burn down. Seems like we all have a lot to learn about the new vehicles. It seems that some many careers are now intermingling. Stay safe in our changing world. Thank you again.

I'm a bit late to the party here, but I learned my electrical trade from an ex railway engineer. He used to work on 650V DC third rail systems on the London underground. He was taught never to blow up insulating gloves with your breath, as the moisture could cause a conductive path inside the glove. The inflator may be expensive, but safer! I'm really enjoying these videos, such detail you cannot find elsewhere. Thank you!

Wow, that is a good idea. I had never thought of that. Thank you and thanks for your feedback!

Sounds fair, but "on the other hand", doesn't a few minutes of hand sweat easily exceed the condensed breath moisture for the average person?

John, this was a 10 out of 10 presentation on EV safety. Even a chemist like me thoroughly enjoyed it. If you do not mind I shall forward the link to this video to others. Well done indeed.

Hats off to my friend Rusty who makes sure to protect himself. He and his wife have a second gen and a third gen Prius and he's always tinkering around with the batteries, His linesman's gloves? He uses two pair of Playtex rubber gloves to protect his life.He wont listen to me at all and I've shared this video with him.

Your videos are fantastic . What I wished would be true across the board isnt; The osha laws for HV and arc-flash protection and flame retardant clothing may apply to auto industry but the commercial aviation industry is specifically exempt. I worked for a Major airline and they only pay for safety glasses and shoes, period. as an Avionics sr tech We work with 3 phase 208-440 vac as well as DC and often up to 140KVA systems, we fall under the FAA rules and they defer specifically to maintenance manual procedures, which just warn of the dangers. Im retired now and over the years Ive seen lost fingers, severe burns and what not. great video !!! On July 10, 1975, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) published a Federal Register Notice asserting FAA's complete and exclusive responsibility for the regulation of the safety of civil aircraft in operation, and asserting that FAA prescribes and enforces standards and regulations affecting occupational safety or health with respect to U.S. registered civil aircraft in operation. The Occupational Safety and Health Act contains a provision, found at 29 U.S.C. § 653(b)(1), known as Section 4(b)(1), which states that "[n]othing in this Act shall apply to working conditions of employees with respect to which other Federal agencies . . . exercise statutory authority to prescribe or enforce standards or regulations affecting occupational safety or health."

I see people handling Tesla modules without seeming to care about any danger. At what point does voltage become a concern? I am building a battery pack for my car and I have been wondering. Also, I purchased a size 10 rubber lineman glove. Do I need a size 10 leather outer cover or should I get a larger size to go over the rubber? Thanks!
@WeberAuto
@WeberAuto 6 лет назад
According to OSHA and NFPA, anything above 50V needs PPE. Get a size 11 leather outer glove to cover a size 10 linesman glove. Best wishes!

I don't know how the mechanics get trained for HV electric vehicles in the US but here in Germany, and it doesn't matter if you're just getting started or are a 20 years experienced mechanic, they get a small training program and thats it. I believe for people like them it is good to use these insulated tools like the wrenches and the ratchet you showed us. I work at an industrial sized company as an electrician for maintenance and my only insulated tools are my screwdrivers from Wiha and only the handle of my Knipex pliers. Neither my ratchets, wrenches or allen keys etc. are insulated. Maybe you can tell me a situation in which you would use ratchets with insulated sockets or those needlenose pliers out of plastic. I however messure and make sure there is no voltage before I start ripping thinks out and I work on machines driven by 230/400/690/6k/20k Volts Great videos, love to see more! I hope you show us the motors of the Mach E GT

High power, High voltage DC is scary. The arc alone from a vehicle battery will happily blind, deafen, burn, and blow you across the room. Would be nice if the glove tester had a pressure gauge.

Hi John D. Kelly, What is the best tools for reconditioning the hybrid batteries. We're wondering to buy one but we don't know what exactly we need as a scanning tools and reconditioning tools.
@WeberAuto
@WeberAuto 6 лет назад
I don't know because we not recondition batteries here. We do use the Midtronix GRX-5100 for discharging, balancing, and charging. See www.midtronics.com/shop/products-1/battery-chargers-and-maintenance-products/diagnostic-chargers/gr-series/grx-5100

So ooo this must be the reason it's soon expensive to do a head gasket repair on my 2011 Chevy volt?. Gasket is only 12.50. Shop time is 12 hrs & the rate is 127/hr. Any recommendations regarding this engine would prove useful. I'm considering changing out the engine for another from same year 2011 with lower miles than original at 93353. Shop r time for an engine replacement is only 19 hrs. I had coolant from the "surge"tank loosing water (tank on passenger fender in engine bay). One shop couldn't find the leak after a 4 hr pressure check. Shop 2 found exghust blown into tank causing it to boil and out pour of the tank. I'm not sure why instrument cluster in cabin didn't give a notice of overheating or low coolant. Faulty devices is my speculation. Any suggestions is appreciated thank you.
@WeberAuto
@WeberAuto 5 лет назад
I am sorry to hear that. the coolant in all three cooling systems should be changed every 5 years or 150k miles, whichever comes first. I have heard of the head gasket issue on this engine. I am not sure if it is a coolant degradation issue or a head gasket issue. i believe the engine is also used in the Chevrolet Cruise. Best wishes

I would have the head and head gasket changed rather than installing another engine.

The more I think about it my workplace as much as I despise it keeps the static at 0. requiring footies in the building outside of the main work floor. Having a vacuum air shower in and out of the work place. As well as having a/c that has 0 humidity. As well as making people wear cotton masks to keep the humidity down. In this environment you don't actually need some of these safety measures. Also Many of these vehicles have hard plastic switches that disconnect the battery completely. Kind of like disconnecting the circuit. This safety equipment is for that one person who doesn't have any common sense.

With your leather gloves over the safety rubber gloves do not forget to indicate the distance where leather ends and the rubber gloves still extend
