Hybrid Keyboard - Creative Prodikeys PC-MIDI

Have you ever wanted a keyboard built into your keyboard? It turned out you could as far back as 1998!
This is a quick look at a really cool keyboard I picked up recently 2005 Creative Prodikeys PC-MIDI. There are three versions but this is the only USB one. None of these keyboards have a proper MIDI port on them. MIDI is sent over the same cable as the alpha keyboard. Which means for the PS/2 versions you'll definitely need the drivers to work. There is a chance the USB one will show up as a standard USB MIDI device in Windows or Mac. I can't say for sure though as I only tried Linux.
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that the piano keys are just little bit stiffer than I would like making it just a tad fatiguing to play.

A note about sustain, there is no relation between pressing the sustain button and the next music key you press.
@Astrosynthesist
@Astrosynthesist 5 лет назад
That is a classic MIDI problem, it probably has nothing to do with that sustain button, especially if it is not assigned to anything. The "forever sustained individual note" happens when a key off message is not received by the module. Remember that MIDI is a serial data stream, and if implemented properly for every "note on" message there is a corresponding "note off" message (although some early keyboards used "note on, velocity 0" instead). Every time you subsequently press that note, it will receive a pair of note on, note off messages, but it would need a further note off to fully cancel the note (the sustain you are getting). If I had to guess, you can replicate this problem by: -pressing and holding a key -pressing an octave button -releasing the key That note will be forever sustained until you reboot the module, send "All Notes Off", or if you can figure out a way, just send a note off for that exact note without a note on first.
@Astrosynthesist
@Astrosynthesist 5 лет назад
Sorry, forgot to add a few things. This keyboard likely has no memory whatsoever pertaining to note presses, it probably sends what it sees and it doesn't remember when you press the octave button that the original note was a C4 for example. If you press the note, a note on is sent for C4. Then change the octave and release the key, a note off is sent on C5. In fact you could try to test my hypothesis and see if you can move the stuck note around the octaves this way. You can also get a Linux utility that displays the Midi data in human readable form as it comes in. My guess is the sustain button just sends a continuous controller message which is up to the software or module to respond to.
@TechTangents
@TechTangents 5 лет назад
That sounds exactly like the problem I'm having. Thank you for the info! It does only happen when I'm playing with the octave buttons now that that you mention it.
@Astrosynthesist
@Astrosynthesist 5 лет назад
I am still finishing off your video - the velocity problem is likely caused by bad carbon pads under the keyboard (same dome kind they use in a computer keyboard). Not having seen it my guess is that it uses two of them and times how long it takes each pad to contact in sequence. When they are dirty it can get really bad results for the timing and produce unreliable data. This is also a common problem for the Rockband 3 keytars when used as a MIDI controller, or really any cheap keyboard.

Ooh! The primary school I attended back in the day had them in one of their three computer labs too! We even had music lessons in there, but I try to forget the time a bully swapped my file for their poorly done file, that got me an E on my grade for that. There will be a day I become brave enough to contact the schools I attended, for their class lists of classes I were put in, so I can grab the names of most or all of the people who bullied me in the past.

What a peculiar device. I can see how it would be really useful for making music, especially if you're away from your normal work environment. At least, it would be useful if the overall build quality were aimed a little higher. I can't help wondering what a Korg take on the concept would be like.

6:31 Yes, it probably is dirty keys. If the (music) keyboard is truly velocity sensitive, then there are *two* contacts under each button, and the processor times them to determine how fast the key is moving. If one of those contacts is dirty, it would exhibit as exactly the weird velocity values you demonstrated.

I have the original white version, which I found at a thrift store too. It sucks that it's PS/2 ... a port I don't have on my computer, so I was sorely disappointed that I never got it to work. A PS/2-USB adapter does not work either (if I recall, I think typing works, but not sending MIDI data from the music keyboard). Neat to see a video on this since there weren't many videos on it back when I found it a few years back. Every while I search to see if anyone got one working (which is how I just found this video now), and I never knew there was actually a USB version.

@SpeedySPCFan
@SpeedySPCFan 5 лет назад
I wouldn't really recommend any of those for music production, unless they fill a really really particular niche and you know they're what you want for sure. Which is limited, dated, and possibly a bit frustrating to work with depending on your music software. If you're dead set on getting an old MIDI module for music, go for an Roland SC-88 *Pro* or SC-8850, or a Yamaha MU100, 128, or 1000/2000. Those are significantly more capable while still having that old school charm. I've done video reviews on most of the old modules if you're interested, the only one I'm really missing is the MU series which is coming next month (it's gonna be a big video).

The inserts were because when you bought it new, you had a choice of coloured inserts you can use. I'm as sure as I can be that these were always a Creative proprietory product. Sadly there are no 64bit drivers so using on a modern OS (it would work on XP & Vista) isn't possible :( There's loads of sites out there saying that they have drivers, but to date none have been released or developed (I've looked for a very long time). The Prodikey PC-MIDI and DM keyboards came with an excellent suite of software, one app which I particularly like/used was one that allowed you to load a midi file and it would show you on the screen which keys to press for a given instrument - a great learning tool as it then took that a step at a time measuring your inputs and then scoring you. I've still got my pc-midi keyboard (am typing now on it) along with the original disks from around 2004, but I've not use for it without the software. Only as a pc keyboard. I hadn;t appreciated that it could operate as a midi keyboard - I'm going the have to look back into this. Any tips on "bouncing ball playing along" software?

Cool! I remember an entire computer lab in the primary school I attended having this in place of the stock Lite-On keyboards for NEC PowerMate VL series desktops that were there, which, yes, were all running Windows XP Pro. We had a music class there, but sadly, a bully swapped my file for their crappy file and I got a bad score for one of the music test. I really have to contact the schools I used to attend, in the hopes I can get student lists for classes I was out in, in an attempt to ban former bullies from being able to sign up for any online services I may create.

2:10 - You can get passive or active PS/2-to-USB adapters on eBay for $1 (and they usually work… more or less). 4:00 - I think most (non-super-expensive) electronic keyboards do four-key polyphony (I know the SK-1 does). 11:30 - Do you take requests? Play “Doom E1M9”!
@slipknotboy555
@slipknotboy555 5 лет назад
The second part - that's not to do with the keyboard itself, that's on the sound generation end. The SK-1 has 4 voice polyphony because its sound engine has 4 voices of polyphony. Also, MIDI is a control standard, and has no impact on polyphony or anything

I have the Prodikeys DM model, but aside from the fact that it only has Windows XP drivers, it is also slightly broken now; I'm considering ripping out the standard computer keyboard section and turning it into a small stand-alone synth, containing a number (4 or maybe 8) SwinSID devices, governed by a microcontroller, but that is a long term project even if it ever comes to fruition. ;)

never learned music stuff at scholl or art stuff. Learning to draw as an adult. after seeing this I think I need to learn music stuff :) to make some techno. Too bad I ccant tell from which end to hold stuff. I had awesomely bad school at this stuff which do not have mandatory exams

that looks impossible to use for production. I'd be awkwardly slamming my wrist down on the lower octave every time I hit ctrl-L to assign a mixer channel

Well, it was good enough for use in music classes in primary/middle schools from what I can tell, and also from my past (and somewhat dreadful) experiences.

I still have the Dm model sitting on the shelf today. Still working 100% fine but it only works as a typing keyboard because i'm disappointed to find the software is no longer supplied by Creative on their website anymore. Maybe there are somewhere, but not sure if I can find any. Guess I have to have a Linux then. :(

Ben de uğraşıyorum ama olmuyor. Çok saçma. Hiçbir yerde win10 64 bit driver yok. Creative yazdım cevap vermiyorlar.

Is the Prodikeys even velocity sensitive? I guess the driver wants to see velocity but the keyboard isnt sensitive.

Oh at 5:00 I believe you could get a pink insert for the wiggily bit, so it's wiggly because it's removable (and what are tolerances?)

great little keyboard, but screwed by the lack of X64 drivers. Will work on W7 (and possibly later) but only if they are 32bit versions of the OS :(

this would be cool to combine with a gameboy - because you can use a PS2 adapter to play the gameboy like a piano froma keyboard
